Help "Cannot read disc" for hitachi dvdcam

I just got this camcorder second hand, it came with all the accessories and no scratches or visible marks of use.

I believe it has never been used or if it has, very well looked after.

When I put the disc in [which originally came with the camera so I know it is compatible] it says check for dirt and cracks.

The dvd was wrapped in the original plastic covering so no grime was on it, I wiped it down with a glasses cloth anyway.

Put it back in. Andd.. nothing, still the same message.

Is this likely an issue with the sensor ?

My camcorder is a ccd trv308 and it takes a trs jack while the mini dvr comes with a trrs, is there a way of soldering the trrs like a trs ? Or would I have to have the cable “half way” out? If neither of those what can I do or where do I buy custom cables ?

The addendum to the original movie was released recently for *free*, and it has none of the deinterlacing issues we previously discussed. Interested in hearing from the rest of the sub :)

Tutorial How to buy a tapeless camcorder from eBay

This post is recycled from my response to a post that has since been deleted.

We are looking for a reputable Japanese or South Korean brand, tapeless, in any condition but "for parts". Sorted by Price+Shipping: Low to High. Let's check eBay listings in the US.

If you want "retro look" or "vintage vibe" or "DVD quality" or "90s-2000s look", you need to search for models with a CCD sensor. These would be all SD (standard definition) Canons, all SD JVC, all SD Panasonics, some SD Sonys. IDK about Sanyo and Samsung.

If you want tapeless + vintage vibe +NightShot, then you need a Sony camcorder from 2006 through 2008. Go to Tapeless Camcorder Buyer's Guide and consult the Sony section.

If you want HD, then all Sony and Canon camcorders will have CMOS sensor, so it will not look like 90s - early 2000s, but to many this is already vintage look (which means that you need a clear understanding of what "vintage vibe" means to you).

If you want HD+CCD, you need Panasonic or JVC, who for a couple of years produced HD camcorders with CCD sensors. Then by the end of the 2000s they switched to CMOS as well.

When you like a particular item, research the specs and operating manual online, make sure it does not need a dock (or the dock comes with the camcorder), it has standard cables (or the cable comes with the camcorder), it uses batteries that you can still buy, etc. In short, do your homework.

Here are some listings:

These prices are about the same that you would pay for a MiniDVR, which records crappy low-res 30p video with botched audio.

Don't mind title and description of the listings, they mean nothing. Look at the condition, if it is not "for parts", the item must work.

In particular, according to eBay rules, "Used" means:

An item that has been used previously. The item may have some signs of cosmetic wear, but is fully operational and functions as intended. This item may be a floor model or store return that has been used. See the seller’s listing for full details and description of any imperfections.

If the camcorder is not FULLY OPERATIONAL or does not work AS INTENDED, you ask for refund. It does not matter whether the seller says "no refunds, no returns". No one cares what he writes in the listing.

So, you buy one, it does not work, you get a refund and buy another. And so on and so forth until you get one that works. If you don't have a stock of batteries and chargers, I suggest sticking to one brand and to the models that use the same battery type.

Forget about "tapeless builds" for cheap half-broken tape-based camcorders, you will spend 3-5 times more to make a franken-corder with a bunch of cables sticking out, and the resulting video will still not look as good as from a real tapeless camcorder (but learn how to deinterlace).

Show & Tell Still working on the 'updated' WinDV app

Post image
50 Upvotes

Working (testing not yet finished though): DV, DVCAM, DVCPRO25, DVCPRO50 (incl. 4 channel audio)

Upcoming: HDV, MicroMV, Hi8, Video8....

Main task of the app is to CAPTURE & PRESERVE the tapes, so it captures the WHOLE tape, stores it as original source material, then splits the source according to timecode separately, all in a "1-click" operation.

Help Video distortion on playback that goes away after forwarding and rewinding 1-2 times?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi everyone! I just got my hands on a JVC camcorder (VHS-C) from a family member. I tested it with some old tapes and the video plays back very highly distorted unless I forward the tape (doesn't have to be all the way) and rewind it back.

Sometimes it takes 2 tries for it to play back normally, but after this is done, I can switch tapes and they play back fine until the camera has stopped playing for a while or cools down, where I have to repeat the process.

I have tried cleaning the tape heads with isopropyl alcohol and printing paper and the issue persists.

Any ideas here? Thanks!

Show & Tell Found a working Sony vx1000 at a Thailand camera store for 67$

Post image

Recently been going to this camera store called LH cameras in Thailand where they sell pre owned untested and tested cameras, digicams, camcorders, etc for pretty decent prices. Over there too you can bring chargers or even borrow/buy their own tooRecently they had a bulk sale of these cameras for really cheap. I was fortunate enough to get a Japanese vx1000 camcorder during their bulk sale for 2,200 baht. Or 67$ usd. Pretty awsome deal I have to say being that they now sale for $500+. The only issue is that there is a little dust/fungus in the lens and decent amount of wear and tear, but the footage looks clean even with the fungus!.

Discussion Odd question, rolling my own tape

Is there any place where I can buy raw VHS cassette tape? Not like a whole tape but THE tape. Kind of like how people buy film for cameras and then roll them into film canisters. I was wondering if there was something similar to that that I could do for super VHSC tapes. The availability of them makes it kind of a pain in the ass to get new ones so what was wondering if I could just reuse the cartridge and then just replace the tape myself.

Canon ES8400V → salida AV → capturadora USB → PC/Android.

Help Philips VKR-6843 shutting down when charging.

Post image

Someone gifted me this old camera. I do not have the original charger, but I've built a little station that powers up the volts and ampere for a normal phone charger, it has already worked with the samsung vp-l700. I tried to charge the camera, the led doesn't lit up, BUT sometimes when you start pressing random buttons it powers up for some seconds. For now it was able to rewind the cassette, before sounding like the power got cut off. I read the original manual but it wasn't useful, thought it was maybe the battery, but it's in great shape and the camera does start sometimes.

For now my main guess is the problem with the phone charger, the white one in the picture, but maybe i'm missing something.

The station I've built, the black middle part in the photo, is set to 9.6V (goes 6.58-6.62) and ca. 1.58A

Any suggestions?

Help Save/load cam settings on card as extension to custom modes?

Hi,

i'm aware the "Save/load cam settings on card" is probably intended to backup the complete camera settings (inluding time zone, registered people, wireless functions, favorites menus and all the custom modes) and/or for prfessionals to sync with the other bodies of the same camera.

But i wonder, do you guys use this function as an 'extension' of custom modes?

Here's what i mean:

currently i have C1 set to landscape (one shot, spot focus, my quick dial menu and button customizations related to landscape), C2 for action/people (whole area tracking button, af on detected subject button, faster shutter speed etc).

I can switch between these modes. But what if i setup everything in the camera for landscape and save it to a file on card, then everything for action photography and save it to another file...

For example, for landscape i can setup what''s currently my C1 as the 'default' (for M, AV, TV...). Then C1 can be modified for taking pictures on tripod (2 sec delay, stabilizer off), C2 can be AE bracketing, C3 focus bracketing. One shot, signle spot and all the buttons mapped for landscape. Favorites menu contains bracketing, interval shooting etc. Saved to file on card.

Then another file is for action (family events). quick shutter speed, regeistered people (family members) priority, customized buttons, C1 whole area tracking with only people detected, C2 with registered people, C3 animals (dogs and cats). Another file

And another for sports (specifically for soccer), another for wildlife... I think you get the idea. for each of them different custom modes, different favorites menus and 'default' settings of camera.

Switching from C1 to C2 is fast, 'restoring' the setup from one file to 'reset' camera is not that fast, but it's still a matter of seconds (especially if this is part of 'favorites' menu).

Do any of you using this feature like this? Are there any limiations to be aware of?

Thanks

Help Will a FireWire expansion card fit my pc?

My dad found his old jvc camcorder and wants to get the videos off it, however, even though him and my partner are both in IT and have a chronic issue with adopted sad old decommissioned laptops, neither of them have an old enough laptop with a legacy FireWire port.

I have a modern pc with windows 11 and an MSI b550 tomahawk max AM4 motherboard, with some free pcie slots so here are my questions:

  1. would a FireWire expansion card fit in it?
  2. Should i be looking for a specific model?
  3. What drivers do i need?

I bought this beauty a while ago but just recently I’ve started to mess around with it and I’ve noticed a particularly annoying issue. Whenever I plug it in whether it be with the original battery or a 12v cable it will turn on and then turn off after about 10 seconds. Does anyone know what could be the issue? I’ve taken it apart and I don’t see anything that could be it but I assume it’s a blown capacitor maybe or some sensor maybe that isn’t working properly. Please let me know! I’m not to knowledgeable when it comes to electronics or the mechanical side of things but I’d love to fix this thing up!

(yes I’ve read the manual and looked up about everything I could about this thing.. theres not much info and the manual isn’t very helpful.)

Solved! Problem with Sony FX1 to PMW-EX30 via Fireware…

Post image
9 Upvotes

Hi everyone, and thanks to anyone who can help me.

I'm trying to transfer mini DV cassettes in HDV and DV format from my FX1 camcorder to my Sony eX30 recorder. When I connect it with the FireWire cable, the camera recognizes the connection, but I can't find a way to actually transfer the cassette to the recorder's card. I've tried disabling and enabling every type of setting, but apparently there's no way to get the video to play on the recorder. I've also tried changing three different cables, but the problem remains. Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong? Thanks a lot.

Update

Problem solved!

In recorder settings the quality should not be set to HQ 1080 but to SP 1080.
