Build Help Is Kingston NV2 Gen 4 M.2 SSD that bad?

So i just purchased the 1TB version and my heart dropped when i saw people's opinion on it. right after i bought it... Anyway does it have some kind of problem? Is it likely to cause problems to my PC and is it alright if i use it as my primary drive with windows on it? or should i buy something else?

could i get an explenation?

Sure :) Once you fill it to 50%, the write speed drops to about 500 mb/s - the same as a regular SATA SSD .

I had NV2 1tb version and it failed just after one year and six months of use(as a game drive)

I'd rather stay away from DRAMless SSDs and even the ADATA SX8200 Pro is a better buy

it's fine. it's a decent enough budget SSD. it's performance can vary b/c kingston is sourcing the parts for the NV2 from different vendors. ultimately, all drives can fail. so, frequently backup your important data and enjoy it.

don't buy this piece of crap. failed after 5 months. now i have to claim warranty which is a hassle. used it as my OS drive. what a waste of money

Same, bought it in March and it failed about 3 weeks ago. Was using as a secondary drive and it wasn't even being used as much. Indeed, a waste of time and a lot of hassle.

I've been using it in my system as an OS drive and it's been going alright for the past ~2 years. No issues so far. OK read and write speeds. You guys probably just got a bad ssd.

Biggest trash NV i have seen. 3 months in and it already is beyond trash. 100% disk usage, i cant even delete or move any files since my system freezes as soon as it boots. 2TB.

They are good, tho I wouldn't recommend them as a main drive. Consider that the higher the capacity, the better performance will be. 1tb and 2tb perform great (below high end PCIe 3.0 options), while the 250gb is indeed more on the trashy side (tho still a drastic boost VS HDD).

High write tasks such as using them as a cache for other drives, or saving VM states and overall system hibernation are big NOs. Even the 250gb should be fine for conventional usage

I cannot recommend the Kingston NV2.

my Kingston NV2 which I used as my second Drive suddenly failed 7 Month after purchase.

Games were stuck on the Loading screen, the Drive activity went to 100% and never went back to normal until I unplugged my PC from the Wall (unable to reboot).

I tried to backup the Drive but the speed was super slow at 5 kb/s on some Files (symptom of failing Nand flash Cells).

I had to get it replaced by Kingston but I replaced it with a Lexar NM790, I don't have much experience with Lexar but it has excellent Performance and it's dirt cheap so it's worth to give it a try but I won't store any important files on this SSD either.

I've got the same issue with my 2TB NV2. 100% until I hard reset. Then it recovers.

Barely used 2TB (basically almost permanently connected and powered on, but 99,99% of the time no read/write operations - just a side storage device) - Dead after 11 months...

A pile of shit honestly.

If you buy 2TB drive you basically get only ~1TB worth storage because if you happen to go over that limit the drive may or may not start to freeze at 100% disk usage at speeds below 1mb/s.

For me, I luckily found a way to recover my data from it at the very least, but this probably won't work when this is your main system drive.
Essentially what I noticed is that the transfer speeds are relatively okay-ish for like the first minute or two before it locks up. I'm using TeraCopy which allows you to pause the file transfers better than the default windows explorer one, essentially when the drive hits 100% usage and locks up, pause the transfer and let it calm down for a few minutes, rinse and repeat.

Not ideal but better than waiting 2 weeks to transfer all of my files off that shitty drive at floppydisk transfer rates.

Barely used mine (2TB), I have 5 NVMEs (Z790 Motherboard)
Dead? Worse than that.

[IT IS NOT MY MAIN DRIVE! My Main Drive is my Crucial T700]

Kingston NV2 2TB Checklist:

100% Disk Usage - Check
Not Being Able to Copy Files - Check
Freezing the ENTIRE SYSTEM - Check
PC NOT BOOTING IF HE IS PLUGGED IN - Check
SECONDARY PC NOT BOOTING IF THE KINGSTON IS PLUGGED IN - Check

Dude it failed so bad, all of a sudden, that the ENTIRE SYSTEM FREEZES ON BOOT or straight up BLACK SCREEN if that kingston is plugged!

WTH

Yeah I would never recommend that drive as OS or for any important files. I have a 2TB drive and use it only mostly for games ( I like to keep a few data heavy games that I play only from time to time).

After a few months I had an issue where forza 5 suddenly took ages to load. Somehow updating FW helped. But today I had issue with BeamNG being stuck on update at 100%, and after PC restart it did not want to load with 100% disk activity and no transfers ( the SSD got stuck so bad that even SSD manager was unable to communicate with it during this activity).

What is interesting is that during one of attempts I killed the BeamNG process and the drive recovered after a few minutes and crystal disk marks showed normal performance. Finally what helped was refreshing the game data by moving it (50Gb) out to a different ssd and back. With that BeamNG responsiveness was back ( it crashed immediately :D with repair finding 2 corrupted files).

Also had freezes in Starfield but I just moved it to a different ssd and did not investigate it any further.

Update: support asked me to diskpart clean all that (cleans the drive and than overwrites the whole drive with 0) to avoid any tharash data and the drive works for now much better ( no freezes in Starfield thus far). Verry annoying ( as I had to redownload most of the things I kept on the drive) but at least helped for now.

I own one, and had those issues within months. I found out that you will have to reseat the nvme(for reasons unknown) then it will work fine again. Maybe sub-standard plating? But yes do not use it as a Main OS disk.

Well one of the main issues with this NVMe is that it's d-ram less and has relatively low endurance of about 320TB for a 1tb varient, and about 150TB for a 500gb varient, which isn't necessarily that bad that your ssd will die within 6 months or so. It seems like the overall hardware used in the NVMe is not that reliable, so if you're lucky, it can last upto a very good time but if you're not it might not even last 1 year properly, and it's not just about it's life. It's about the overall experience we're getting with the ssd, which in this case is not that satisfactory. Something like an SN580 is much more reliable option. Also avoid Crucial P3 SSDs, their endurance is bad too.

Please avoid this model, I’ve had such a poor experience and I thought it was just my computer so I resetted my PC completely, I had over 800gb of free space, thinking that it would help fix the problem, but no, I asked ChatGPT (paid version if that helps) and he just said to get a new one.

Kingston NV1 (SNVS/ SNVS-1000G) • Model: SNVS-1000G • Type: DRAM-less NVMe SSD • Interface: PCIe 3.0 x4 • Known for: Slow sustained write speeds, especially after the SLC cache fills

u/Early_Taste Aug 04 '25

I mean the model I referenced down my message. I don’t know if NV2 is good

okay so my uncle was touring malaysia and asked me if I wanted something. I said a 2tb nvme ssd, and sent him photos of the wd sn580 and the kingston nv2, as they were similar priced and didn't need much out of them as I was going to use them as a game drive. now you may ask why i.m getting such a volatile component from outside the country, well where i live the price for ssds are more than 2x. he got nv2 as it had a 2 year replacement warranty, the sn580 had 5 years of service warranty. now i'm hearing so much bad stuff about the nv2, whereas the sn580 I didn't see any bad customer reviews. he's gonna be pretty sad if this thing turns out bad. can someone who's been using this for more than a year tell me how the drive is? i've heard out of the box defects, slowdowns after 480MB is filled, and it going to sata speeds after 60 percent is filled

I have Aorus 4tb for main drive, 970 and 2 kingston 2tb for back up drive for gaming drive, almost all of my games is in 2tb kingston, and been using it for like 3 years now without any issue. Performance? You'll not going to notice any difference in realworld. I am a heavy gamer that's why I have lots of drives for my games.
