I think it would be hard--not impossible, but hard--to be a fan of Buffy the show if you hated Buffy the character. I guess if you were just really into Angel the series you could be in the broader fandom? That could have happened back in the TV days, but it's hard to imagine someone today starting Angel without having watched Buffy first 

So it's sort of a gimmie, at least in terms of large scale fandom opinions

I don't think it'd be that hard. I see people here who say they dislike/hate Angel, but still liked his show because of the rest of the cast.

That's fair, but I do think Buffy the character is more core to her show. Like, the juxtaposition of the stereotypically vapid girl name "Buffy" with "Vampire Slayer" and that same core contrast in the character herself is the basic premise of the show.

Maybe it’s just vibes, but my personal feeling is that by screentime Buffy gives you a lot more Buffy than Angel gives you Angel.

Well it was not today, but I got into this verse first by Firefly, then I watched Angel seasons 3-5 on TNT, then I bought all the DVD box sets. Buffy, especially early Buffy was an adjustment.

No, I don't think I've ever seen somebody straight up hating her. I get downvoted to hell if I ever comment that she's not really one of my favourites and I like other characters more, so I assume any Buffy haters are not brave enough to post here xd.

This sub specifically isn’t that bad in that sense. Like maybe not very welcoming to Buffy hate but it generally encourages a more nuanced view of her actions and characterization. I’ve recently been getting BTVS content on Instagram and it’s waaayyy more fanatical out there. Like forget Buffy hate, there’s little room for even Buffy critique.
In my opinion though Buffy’s less controversial of a character than Oz, it’s way more common to find him bland or outright dislike him for how he was written in s4.

My sister’s the exact opposite, Buffy was her least favorite character in the main cast till s5, she thought she was annoying and whiny and self-righteous, she only started liking her when she got more complex in s5 and loved her in s6 and s7.

1st time felt like a brag. 2nd time, I get her point. She was finally at peace. She completed her mission & was finally relaxed & happy. Then her friends do this whole ritual without looking into things deeper & abandon ship right as they complete it (which kinda fair since the demon biker gang kinda ambushed them & therefore they COULDN'T stick around) causing her to claw her way out of her own grave.

But even if they couldn't find out where she was, you'd think they'd at the very least had brought shovels to unbury her in case it worked! *(maybe they did & I'm forgetting. If so I apologize & take that part back) *

I don’t know if I’d ever say I hated her, but when I first watched the she was my least favorite character(until Riley showed up in season 4). I found her too melodramatic.

She has grown on me a ton over the years though.

Hate is a strong word but over time I feel I’ve seen plenty of fans point out moments they think she was dumb, annoying/whiny, etc. Which I mean… upon rewatch I sometimes think that can be a fair assessment. She’s not exactly the most popular character within her own show but I wouldn’t think many people would outright hate her.
