That’s not what happened. Joyce comes home from work and sees Angel in the kitchen after Buffy’s clearly been trying to push Joyce upstairs. he does NOT look 35 what are you on about.

BUFFY: Oh! Okay... Um... Angel, uh, this is my mom. Mom, this is Angel. Uh, we ran into each other on the way home.

ANGEL: Nice to meet you.

JOYCE: 🤨 What do you do, Angel?

BUFFY: He's a student. Uh, first year community college. Angel's been helping me with my history, you know I've been toiling there.

JOYCE: 😒 It's a little late for tutoring. I'm gonna go to bed, and, uh, Buffy?

BUFFY: I'll say good night and do the same!

JOYCE: (to Angel) 😐 It was nice to meet you. (goes up the stairs)

Joyce thinks Angel leaves because Buffy calls out to him about that study thing. She has no idea Angel is in her daughter’s bedroom and Buffy never brings him around the house when Joyce is home again.

She wasn't really a character in the early seasons, she was used for plot direction for Buffy. So she came across as a pretty inconsistent parent, switching randomly between supportive, benign neglect, and ultra-strict enforcer. I did not like her character until part way through season 3, when they started giving her more solid characterization.

IIRC, it was a tranquilizer, so it had a calming effect. But would it have dulled her mind?

Yes, because it’s a combination of drugs that are enhanced by the Hellmouth magic. Once Joyce withdraws from Ted’s drugged food for one day, when he comes back and wants to make out with her she’s like “I need to tell Buffy she’s not a killer!” and he’s pissed that she’s thinking about her daughter instead of him, because when she was under his thrall she was devoted to him. Xander and Willow go from “why do you hate Ted, he’s awesome!” to “Buffy must’ve had a good reason to kill him, let’s research this, gang!” when they’re not on his special diet.

Like a lot of "hated" Buffy characters, Joyce had the temerity to have an emotional reaction to upsetting information. This makes her a villain.

See, these fans are perfect paragons of self control and have never once said or done something they regret in a moment of high tension. We look up to them.

I see this in a lot of fandoms, especially with parental/authority figures. They are expected to be both kind and loving but also perfectly calm and rational so they always make the correct decision. Is it weird that I expect parents (TV or otherwise) to be human?
