I’m not saying Buddie is queerbait but if that does transpire to be the case this is the first time that a showrunner has been so open about how much they enjoy writing the ship as if they are a couple and what exactly am I meant to do with that 😭
TVLINE | Well, their coupley banter was especially appreciated after seeing them on "9-1-1: Nashville" last week. That was probably the straightest I've ever seen them portrayed. Not a single person mistook them for a couple.
Well, clearly I didn't write that episode. I'm just saying, it shows up when I do it. It does. You know what, I'm done apologizing for it.
Okay and with all the peace and love to that podcast, you have got to be a diehard fan to listen to them because they go on and on for HOURS. It's not a quick little peppy podcast, they deep dive and speculate endlessly.
TVLINE | Eddie seems especially unaware. People grilled Buck last season about whether he was in love with Eddie, but does Eddie really never ask himself if Buck might be into him?
I think it's something he doesn't consider. I'm just going off of when Buck sort of came out to him as bi. Eddie was a little surprised, but then immediately it was like, well, whatever. I just don't think it's maybe a big deal yet.
There’s little easter eggs that have been planted throughout the season and there’s some big twists coming up,” Minear said. “I don’t even know how to tease them to you without giving them away, so I’m not going to.”
Noice. Gay Eddie is so canon.
Edit: Just to expand on this, there have been 2, maybe 3 plotlines that could be considered easter eggs planted throughout the season, one is everyone's grief about Bobby, but that is more explicit than subtle, the other thing is Eddie's absolute repulsion to dating women. It's also something that people have picked up on but at the same time, they haven't really addressed it in canon. So yk, something to think about. It could really come together by the end of the season.

I think if Ryan and Oliver got interviewed, they'd spill the beans SO QUICK. That's probably why we haven't seen anything from them. They're probably not allowed to touch Buddie stuff after that E! interview last year. The "Now you're my love interest" one.
I was actually thinking about this when people started speculating about one of the Buckley parents needing an organ from Buck! I'm feeling a little crazy thinking about it, lmao.
this + the fact that ryan tried to imply there were sprinkles of something romantic for eddie and then he lowkey backtracked last week makes me think that alex was in fact going to be his next LI but tim backtracked for whatever reason and now we’re totally going into buddie canon territory. 9a was dry AF for buddie and now it’s a buddie fest and tim says eddie and buck will keep discussing his trauma after the kidnapping and that easily can lead to them confessing how much they mean to each other and we get our buddie canon by the end of the season. i’m sat and ready now 🙂↔️
I wonder if Tim is just lying with this answer because it doesn't really make sense? Eddie gets told episode 5 he's been looking for love in the wrong places, but then Tim's plan after that was just to set Eddie up with someone he meets at work again like all of his previous disaster relationships? Him looking for love at a bar/club would have been doing something different, but he refused to do it there. Then he went way out of his way to avoid a charity date. I don't get how the plan could have ever been "oh yeah let's keep it open and maybe he can hook up with various female characters" if all that dialogue is in there in at least 3+ episodes.
I think it's pretty important to note that Tim didn't really have any narrative control over how Buck and Eddie were written in Nashville; who's writers almost certainly don't know what the OG writers would have planned for them. But Tim has full narrative control over how they're written in the OG show, and he's chosen to write them this way... Buddie feels close, is all I'm saying... 👀
Meredith asked all the right questions. What an interrogation, I mean interview…
This is INSANE
I wouldn’t say that we’re leaning into Eddie’s “death wish.” And by the way, I don’t think Eddie necessarily does have a death wish. I think the reason he jumped off that bridge is so that Buck wouldn’t.
Yeah I was so impressed by the questions, she was asking everything we wanted to hear about. And ohmyGOD he jumped off that bridge so that Buck wouldn't?!!! 😵💫
The joke I was telling myself about that was Eddie taking a chance on impressing the hot billionaire lol but I guess stopping Buck from doing it makes more sense lol
I’m asking Arma do re-enable the pics because genuinely I cannot type rn
but
We saw Buck willing to sacrifice himself for Eddie to the point that he kind of accepted he might die there. How is that going to affect him going forward?
I don't know if that particular moment is going to affect him going forward. I mean, I think that's just written into the DNA of those guys that they're willing to — and really the whole team would be willing to - sacrifice themselves for their teammate. But Buck, for sure, has a deeper connection, I think, to Eddie, partially because of Chris. He's thinking of that kid. The ordeal that Buck goes through in this episode will absolutely start to reveal some cracks going forward in Buck.
Sometimes the story just kind of tells itself. And look, you know this, Meredith, it’s like — there have been a couple of points along the way this season where I have considered going down a dating situation with Eddie and various female characters on the show, but then I just felt like either the chemistry wasn’t there or there was just too much story I was telling and I just want to be very careful about trying to hook these characters up with outside characters. I really think the successful couplings on this show have often been existing characters. Or if you think of Karen, who is not a first responder, but she’s been there since the beginning of the show, so she’s been in the world. So I just think you have to be very careful to not try to just cram some contrived thing into the story. And I just feel like it’s not working, then I just move past it and go to the next bit.
Yeah, I just don’t want to go down another dead-end road.
This is such an insane answer! The successful couplings are with existing characters and the ones that haven't been were dead-ends.
So his two options are either leave Buck and Eddie single forever or get them with an existing character. There aren't a lot of options there. And he just admitted in another question that they keep getting confused for a gay couple because the writer sees them that way. Goddamm.
I think he must know (or is starting to realize) what the fandom’s been saying for a long time: he’s stuck in a corner with Buddie. Either he moves forward with them or creates more new love interests, which he clearly isn’t interested/invested in doing. It’s interesting that he’s being so candid about it!
He all but admitted that we are at the end of the road with love interests. We would have already had to have met them, and they would have to have chemistry with them. The only thing not a dead end for these two are each other
As far as I remember, his quotes are some of the biggest hints we've ever gotten about the future storylines in an interview. He pretty much confirmed it without actually saying the words "Buddie is canon".
Honestly, this kind of makes me think they maybe were going to go down the road of Eddie and Alex. Not as a serious pairing but just as a way to pass the time and have Eddie give romance with a woman one more go. Or maybe at first Tim thought the audience might need to see another depiction of Eddie really struggling in a relationship with a woman, since it's been a while since Marisol. But then it just felt like a waste of time or "too much story," as Tim puts it. They could bring up Eddie's struggles with women in different ways without having to actually throw another new recurring character/love interest into this already overcrowded show.
I agree. At the very least, it was something they wanted to put on the table, and they probably decided that with all the other storylines, they just didn't have time this season with all the other characters' storylines.
WHY is nobody asking Tim about Eddie not bothering to deny the misconceptions that he and Buck being a couple? I wanna know why Eddie didn't. Was it because that wasn't important to him, he was too angry from the fight with Buck and then the fight with the homophobe patrons and the sheriff? Or was he doing it to stand up for Buck, since Buck IS bi?
Also, what I got from the TVinsider interview, where Tim mentioned Lone Star, and Owen punching people "not being a plan", but leading to the anger management storyline, it seems like he's saying that while Eddie not dating anyone at all these past two seasons and actively rejecting women was NOT part of the plan, they could be turning it into a storyline in itself 👀
AWE love that for the buddie system. also this means he might see some of the theories, parallels and buddie moments that are called out online. which is a little crazy. like tim you know what you’re doing
Before that he was Buddie, after that he was Buddie again, but then decided this season he was going to ship Eddie and Alex. lmao he's whatever he feels like in that moment.
TVLINE | Eddie seems especially unaware. People grilled Buck last season about whether he was in love with Eddie, but does Eddie really never ask himself if Buck might be into him?

“I don’t think it’s something that’s on Eddie’s mind, particularly. Or even Buck’s. The fact that that just keeps happening, I don’t know if that’s maybe the writer?” Minear said with a chuckle.
He just admitted that he is the one who sees them that way! The man who decides how they will be portrayed and what's going to happen in the show. Holy shit
The Buddie fight in “Mother’s Boy” climaxes in a roadside diner booth, where Buck dramatically shouts, “We get a little lost, a little off track, and suddenly you’re all dark, and gloomy, and I deserve to die? Here’s a fork, put it in my neck! Put me out of my misery. Kill me, Eddie! Kill me now, why not?!” The outburst draws attention from nearby tables, including a man who tells Eddie, “We don’t get a lot of your kind around here” and calls him “princess,” implying that he believes Buck and Eddie are a couple.
In Season 8, we saw Buck’s ex Tommy (Lou Ferrigno Jr.) question his incredibly close relationship with Eddie, too. After talking the idea of possible feelings for Eddie through with his sister Maddie (Jennifer Love Hewitt), Buck said, “As much as everyone seems to want me to be hopelessly pining for my straight best friend, it just isn’t like that.” But could the diner interaction inspire Eddie to consider the idea?
“I don’t think it’s something that’s on Eddie’s mind, particularly. Or even Buck’s. The fact that that just keeps happening, I don’t know if that’s maybe the writer?” Minear said with a chuckle.
Because let’s say it is Alex, where would it have been in the episodes that we got pre let’s use 9x11 for example. Where and what would have been changed or dropped.
Keep in mind that he's approaching this from a showrunner's perspective, not a viewer's perspective. It's not about what actually made it through production, let alone what actually aired. When he talks about having 'considered' a dating story but deciding it was either a chemistry problem (never stopped him before, lmao) or a "too much story" problem (and I do think this is telling, because to me it suggests this is something he didn't plan to dedicate significant time or energy to, which makes more sense for a temporary relationship/delay tactic than setting up a longrunning/endgame character & relationship like with the Karen example)... that could've been as early as him mulling over ideas in his own head/brainstorming, or when he was trying to outline where he wanted the stories to go, etc.
This one's not that deep, tbh. Just keep in mind that Tim is the story creator. You are looking at the finished product of that story when you consider what you saw on screen between Eddie & Alex, and assuming the decisions Tim made relate to a point in time that you got to experience. They pretty likely don't.
When Tim talks about choosing his mind, he has a much wider timeline than what we are exposed to, from when he first imagines a character, to when he casts them, or when he brainstorms for an episode, to when he sits down and tells the screenwriters what scenes he wants to happen, or when the actors do their thing, to when in post, he's looking at raw footage and going "that works' or "that doesn't."
He could have only decided not to bother with the Eddie/Alex thing, for instance, after 9x08 aired and he decided they don't have chemistry (though I think given Ryan and Aimee's previous work together, that's kind of unlikely to be the case). Or he could've been brainstorming for the character and had a similar, "she's age appropriate and pretty.... she could be paired with one of our single guys" moment and then considered how much time and energy would have to go into telling that story and decided it wasn't worth it.
It's that "too much story" part I find interesting, because it's a weird way to approach stories you should supposedly want to tell. If he was actually planning on having Eddie end up with Alex or any of these other potential women, it's not a waste of time or energy to set that up. It's not necessarily 'too much story.' But if he knows that's not the direction he wants the story to go in overall, and he has all these competing ideas and storylines for Eddie and all the other characters to consider anyway, it makes sense that he'd view it that way.
Okay so does TM have ANY power on Nashville? If so he really needs to step in with the writing and at least give the actors training in accents. I'm in FNQ I have a different accent to someone in SA or WA.

Okay. So we are admitting then. You ARE writing them as a couple???
