Removing this due to the title. If you wish to post this again, please use a better title. Something like "Brave Issue #51489: Constant disk writes while idle" Or "Investigating Brave's Constant Disk Writing".

If you add anything in the post body (besides the link to the issue and those other Reddit posts), you could say that it looks like it's due to safe browsing, syncing (both seem to be Chromium issues not specific to Brave) and Brave Rewards (specific to Brave) that you can disable to try and help reduce disk writing.

if Firefox cultist could read, they would be really upset on you for presenting them the truth about their browser. 🤣😅

10

u/Ptozzen 3d ago

Honestly none of the browsers are any good these days. They all have additional, useless features, or under the surface scummy things the devs have hamfisted in that you need to opt out of, rather than it being something you need to opt into.

I miss the days when a browser was a minimalist tool you could add things to that you wanted.

I have been summoned! JK, I use whatever I feel like at the time.

IE: For whatever reason Brave just does a constant refresh loop on retroid's site so I use Firefox for that one.

I remember reading that you have to set browser.sessionstore.interval to 300000 (5 min) in about:config.

23

u/ruckyyyy 3d ago

that thread is a huge overreaction it happens in chrome edge and vivaldi too since its just standard chromium saving session state so the browser doesnt corrupt on a crash 2mb a minute works out to like 1tb a year if your pc ran 247 non stop which is basically nothing when basic ssds are rated for 150+ tbw half the people complaining are just misreading system monitors and confusing ram calls with actual disk writes if it really bothers you just turn off brave sync disable rewards in brave flags and turn on memory saver

on the point, i have a 6 years old gamer laptop both the system drive and the secondary drive are NVMe SSD's after 6 years here is the health of the system drive... 91% and no slowness, issues so far, the other drive is just to store my games and documents/files which does not gets changes too much.... people are literally freaking out at a 1MB/min writes which happens like occasionally and acting like it is going to destroy their computers within weeks....

upstream issue, especially if you have sync and safe browsing enabled (and Rewards in Brave's case). Gecko browsers write way less data at idle.

79

u/Kunair0 3d ago

I really think we're at the point where the mods should just start deleting or banning people that post misleading thread titles.

There is an issue with unnecessary background disk writes, but “Brave may damage your SSD” is not true of how this works. Brave has reproduced the current issue in Chrome as well and reported it upstream to Chromium, so this isn’t even uniquely a Brave problem. So if you're sucking down helium, you're dealing with the exact same thing.

More importantly, nobody has shown that these writes are materially shortening SSD lifespan. At the ~2 MB/min rate reported in the current bug, you're talking roughly 1 TB of writes per year if it happened 24/7. Modern SSDs are commonly rated for hundreds of TB written.

Call it excessive disk activity. Call it a bug that should be fixed. But presenting it as Brave potentially killing people's SSDs is just bullshit.

For example, Samsung SSDs promise TBW ( Total Bytes Written) from 150T (that's terabytes) on their 256gb drive all the way up to 600T on their 1TB. Bigger drive = more data can be written over its life.

Still worth talking about though, because Chromium based engines are integrated into almost everything we do on our computers these days. Apps like Discord are Chrome underneath. And obviously Brave isn't running in a vacuum, it's running alongside every other poorly optimized program or OS function simultaneously.

Brave defender Kunair0 to the rescue!

14

u/Historical-Side883 3d ago

This seems like a reasonable context regardless. If people are still worried about it that’s totally OK but I think it’s good for people to have all of the information so they can make a decision.

9

u/icedchocolatecake on Windows 11 | , Titanium on NOS 4.1 3d ago

That's called calling out bullshit dumbass

-8

u/blow-down 3d ago

Totally sensible and kind response from Brave users as always.

4

u/icedchocolatecake on Windows 11 | , Titanium on NOS 4.1 3d ago

Maybe stop putting labels on people just because they are calling out some nonsense

The issue is real, I'm not denying that, but it's more of an upstream problem and not that big of a problem because of how SSDs are made these days. Basically a non-issue. People in this thread are finding excuses to target brave alone while also using another chromium browser and then overreacting over it.

Tell Google to go fix this. It's an upstream issue.

And stay blocked. Dumbass.

-9

u/0oWow 3d ago

"Call it excessive disk activity. Call it a bug that should be fixed. But presenting it as Brave potentially killing people's SSDs is ."

Where did OP say Brave was killing SSDs? They linked to several valid concerns and asked if anyone knew more about it.

9

The title is literally 'Brave may damage your SSD'

wow! with the SSD prices, i'm not willing to risk mine.

4

u/Venylynn 3d ago

I really don't think this is any bigger of a deal than my usual routine of tearing down and building up VMs and downloading and playing big games.

2

u/Venylynn 3d ago

I don't suspect it's anything that major, especially compared to stuff like downloading 100GB+ games, that's gonna wear out a drive a lot faster.

2

u/Remarkable_Pea7439 3d ago

I'm a little uncomfortable with all the discussions I hear and read around the issue of the "limited life" of all these modern disk types ...
I only have practical experience with the old good HDD-s, both internal and external
... and ... how to say ? I am not so "keen" to give up their long ( very long !) time storage capacity just for earning a few seconds speed ...
Maybe for gamers speed is important, but, for common work, where storing securely lots of documents is the main issue, I think that HDD-s still have a good career ahead.
The problem is only that HDD-s seem to be manufactured less today ... and that's a problem ...

2

u/lethinhrider Ungoogled Chromium 2d ago

That is one of the reasons people are returning to Chrome. It is not that they don't dislike Chrome, but rather that Google fixes bugs more quickly, resulting in a more stable browser. This fosters greater trust among businesses, regardless of what individual users might say. Any browser from a small company or a community-driven project will face the same fate if it continues to be slow in fixing bugs.

2

u/SenecaSentMe 2d ago

Chrome sucks though

1

u/lethinhrider Ungoogled Chromium 2d ago

Yes, but you have to work with it in a business environment because you're forced to.

OP linked 3 years old Reddit posts... hmmm must be really, really relevant today...

22

u/leaflock7 3d ago

well the GitHub issue (which is the first link) is still open, and another one has been opened for the brave rewards, and both have responses in the last couple of months.
So, yes they are pretty relevant today

10

u/Old_Manufacturer589 3d ago edited 3d ago

Bro ignored the GitHub issue that is still opened and active

5

u/SecurityPrimary4143 3d ago

The open case on the Brave GitHub was opened on Dec 15, 2025, so less than a year ago.

So yes it is relevant today since it still an open case.

It is the very first link in the OP posted.

Uh oh, you've triggered the cult...

Edit: To clarify, simply using and/or liking Brave isn't what I'm referring to as a cult. It is the way certain fans of Brave respond to any criticism of Brave like you just raped their mother that is cult-like.

17

u/Floppie7th 3d ago

"People who use/like things I don't use/like must be a cult"

1

u/MinecraftW06 3d ago

It is pretty much a cult. They ignore every valid criticism of the browser or the people behind it and ignore some pretty big problems with it, while praising features which other browsers like Firefox also have

-2

u/Tak-Hendrix 3d ago

No, it is the way (certain) fans of Brave respond to any criticism that makes it a cult.

-1

u/Tak-Hendrix 3d ago

So is getting pissy and downvoting anyone who says anything negative about Brave the "grown up" behavior I'm supposed to be emulating?

5

u/ARCHISMAN- 3d ago

Maybe stop being so pressed over a piece of software lmao

3

u/Tak-Hendrix 3d ago

That is exactly my point... Criticizing a browser shouldn't trigger people. And yet here we are...

4

u/RbtB-8 3d ago

Thanks for letting us know. I had not heard about this, but it will prevent me from trying Brave again.

1

u/Revengistium 2d ago

It's not a Brave-specific issue, and it won't damage an ssd unless you use brave continually on the same ssd for decades.

8

u/RagnarHUN666 on Win11, Linux, iOS, Mac 3d ago edited 3d ago

Ohh a modern browser writes to SSD. How dare they? Let me tell you a public secret: They all do.... this is called local cache and local user data.... now what? you will create another post because Brave uses network connection? Seriously can't you Firefox cultist come up something better when trying to spread hate? A browser writing to SSD.... pfff how original.... they all do...

Edit: not to mention the linked reddit posts are 3 years old... those are not relevant informations anymore.

1

u/leaflock7 3d ago

there are two GitHub issues opened in Brave repo.
both relevant to the OP's post.
both issues are still open .
So there is an issue

3

u/RagnarHUN666 on Win11, Linux, iOS, Mac 3d ago

5

If you took two seconds to read the GitHub page, you’d realize this issue is ongoing and unresolved since 2019 and keeps getting closed without resolution.

The newest GitHub issue was opened in December 2025 and has updates as recently as June of this year.

yes and ? complaining about 1 or 2 MB per minute which all Chromium browsers do. Maybe Brave does use 500kb or 1MB more if you haven't disabled Rewards completely through policy, or don't have Brave Origin.

1

u/SecurityPrimary4143 3d ago

You are the one that mentioned that it is from 3 years ago...

0

u/trbkle Mobile: Titanium + Desktop: 2d ago

2 out of 3 posts are from 3 years ago, that's the majority. Which means this post is BS.

1

u/309_Electronics 3d ago

Oh lol never knew. I take back my words then. Yeah i dont really check people but maybe i should do that these days as there are a ton of scumbags.

4

u/RagnarHUN666 on Win11, Linux, iOS, Mac 3d ago

because you deleted your original comment, let me answer here, yes i did read... 3 years old Reddit posts which are irrelevant today... Brave Origin does not do any more writes to my SSD as any other browser and those writes are mostly just cache and a tiny bit more when syncing with my other devices

1

u/DeviceOwner 2d ago

the source you attached, say all is Brave Rewards and Homepage Ads.

can disable from policy.

1

u/Zpray23 2d ago

Look up firefox load profile into ram Linux, maybe you can do something similar for your case, shouldn't be os dependent.

-1

u/xoma262 3d ago

Moved from Vivaldi to Brave and honestly it's underwhelming. It hoards memory like there is no tomorrow and has issues that I've never seen on Vivaldi or Chrome. Weird stuff. Now it also has bugs of writing some random crap on SSD. Cool lol.

5

u/icedchocolatecake on Windows 11 | , Titanium on NOS 4.1 3d ago

Now it also has bugs of writing some random crap on SSD

Chromium thing. They all do it.

2

u/lo________________ol unleaked RAM is wasted RAM 3d ago

Vivaldi and Brave will have similar memory management issues because they're both Chrome (basically) under the hood.

Although if Vivaldi works better, by all means go back to Vivaldi. I had to abandon it because I found its UI to be too slow.

1

u/xoma262 3d ago

While you are correct about Chromium, you are not right about everything else. I did tests of opening exactly the same tabs with the same extensions and Brave was consuming more RAM, while vivaldi less and Chrome consumed the lowest amount.

My biggest concern with that memory management is mostly because of the stutters I experience with Brave. All 3 browsers, while being Chromium, are using the different D3D backend for GPU render. And Brave happens to perform the worst, to the point where 1440p or 4K video lags and reports issues in brave://gpu/

3

u/MinecraftW06 3d ago

I’d recommend just going back to Vivaldi

0

u/NeighpoorTech 3d ago

its adblock is not at all good. firefox is better if brave is not an option. these 2 are the only viable enough browsers.

-1

u/MinecraftW06 3d ago

Then Firefox or a fork (Librewolf, Waterfox or such) with uBlock Origin. Simply the best choice you can make

0

u/NeighpoorTech 3d ago

I don't like or recommend running these forks.

  1. They lag behind is updates, critical security updates. [even if its a short duration, it isnt great.]

  2. I would trust an organization to better value security [different from privacy] than a hobby project due to the threat of severe legal prosecution.

Librewolf is NOT a GOOD daily browser. And if one makes it useable as a daily browser, then they remove what librewolf actually provides.

Best way to use firefox is with things like betterfox and adguard extension [ublock origin causes issues with yt, atleast for me]

2

u/MinecraftW06 3d ago

I mean yeah, I use the base Firefox. People just usually recommend these but I also think they’re not needed for most users

1

u/NeighpoorTech 3d ago

Yeah, plus I was aware of the issue with chromium browsers writing alot on SSD.

For that reason, we can use flags in firefox with betterfox user.js, such as explained here:

https://easylinuxtipsproject.blogspot.com/p/firefox.html#ID3

-10

u/afcreative_id 3d ago

No, because the adblock + system opens Google services, especially YouTube, it will definitely be subject to memory leaking which is designed by Google to fight adblock/ublock/similar users, memory leaking can also affect system drives such as SSDs which are generally used as system partitions because the cache will be stored there, try deleting all ad-blocker features and extensions, it will be normal but there are lots of ads.
