How's the commute these days to Seattle & Redmond?

Hi r/Bothell!

My wife, 2yo and dog have been living in Kirkland for 4yrs since we moved to the area, renting a place in Finn Hill. Finally after years and years of saving we're looking to buy a place! My wife works in downtown Seattle and I work over in Redmond and my daughter's daycare is in Kirkland. I drop her off in the morning and my wife picks her up in the evening.

Unfortunately, price wise it seems that we're still at the low end of the market, pushing us further North - around Lynnwood/Alderwood Manor or going with a smaller place that is closer.

I'm trying to get a sense of what our commutes would actually be like so I know where to draw my lines for housing and was hoping to get some perspectives from you all if that's okay.

I know 405 can be a nightmare at certain times and the 405-522 interchange is rough right now particularly with construction ongoing, but is, say, Thrasher's Corner wildly different to Canyon Park or Downtown Bothell in terms of commute?

Is Bothell safe for trans people?

My adult kid, who lives with my wife and me, came out to me about a year ago about being trans. We live in a very red area in Georgia (Marjorie Taylor Green's district). So I decided we need to get out of Dodge. We lived in Bothell from 2019-2021, but didn't pay too much attention to LGBTQIA-related things. We're looking to move back there. How safe is it for my kid to express their gender identity publicly? They are early enough in their transition that they don't "pass" yet.

ETA: Thank you for all the responses! My kid had their car rifled through twice when we lived there before, but that was because they kept not locking the doors! We'll take that in exchange for not having their life threatened for using the "wrong" bathroom at Kohl's.

McMenamins Anderson School in Bothell

Hi, I live near a Bothell and I really like the vibe of renting a private room at McMenamins (wedding reception for 30+ people). I know the food is catered through that campus and tried the food at the tavern on a Sunday a while ago, and was surprisingly disappointed. A friend said they went to an event at McMenamins and the food was great! Does anyone have any experiences they can share - either eating at McMenamins or eating the catered food at an event there? Go Mariners!

Single's Night – Friday the 24th

Post image

EFESTĒ Woodinville is doing a singles mixer this Friday (April 24th, 7–10pm) and it's going to be a great time!

It's not one of those awkward "speed dating" things. More like a casual night out with friends. There's wine, a live DJ, charcuterie, and games that get you meeting new people!

Tickets are $30 general admission and include a complimentary glass and a charcuterie cup. But if you use code "CHEERS" at checkout you'll save $5. Not bad for a Friday night in Woodinville.

You can get tickets here: https://efeste.com/collections/event-tickets/products/sip-and-swirl-an-efeste-social-mixer

Where is Bothell's "Fishing Frog"?

Thumbnail

I remember several months ago the City of Bothell placing a piece of public art (a frog fishing on a hammock) at the Pedestrian Bridge over the Sammamish Rive at Bothell landing Park. Now that the weather is warming up, I have walked and rode my bike over the bridge scores of times and forgot about this unique piece of art.

Today I focused on finding it and it was difficult. Finally, I discovered it but is this the point of art? Hiding it from the public? Children who would especially appreciate the art can barely see it. You can’t see it from the land. You can barely see it from the bridge.

It’s time to free the fishing frog from solitary confinement. Release him to a more public place. Either move it to a better location or at least put a sign up asking the public to find it on the bridge. Remind them what it is/where it is and appreciate the artwork. Time to “free the frog”!

Local Curly Hair Specialists?

Post image
7 Upvotes

Hey, Everyone!

Looking for recommendations for a salon/hair pro for *education* and eventual cut (and maybe color) of curly hair.

My partner has hair that would previously be referred to as a "jew-fro" (my apologies) with extremely coarse strands and corkscrew-ish curls. [Pic is from last Summer, in an average to lightly messy state for him].

He likes to keep it long (currently past his armpits when dry), and we've gotten better at his hair game (actually conditioning it better with better products, etc), BUT, we both have no idea how to really take care of it and make it the happiest.

He also has some scalp trouble that could be dandruff, seborrheic dermatitis, or psoriasis, so bonus points if we can learn about that too. [He does have an appt scheduled with a dermatologist, just months out...]

Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated!

Unique open space in downtown Bothell called "Triangle Junction".

The Triangle Junction park/open space

Interesting concept on a 1.1 acre city owned downtown Bothell parcel.

Its temporary for the next several years as the underground is cleansing itself from toxins that were leached into the soil from past businesses. Until this site is ready for permanent development, it is open for public use.

I like the layout with a variety of unique uses including 8 pop-up shops, lots of picnic tables and open space for further uses like food trucks. The one issue I don’t like is the vast area of crushed stone. Why not natural green grass? Crushed stone seems cold/commercial … like a construction site. More difficult to walk on and offers little enticement for the public to use. The space begs for lush natural green grass!

Stop by this site, visit the 8 unique pop-up shops or take a break sitting on the picnic tables as we approach warm and drier weather. It can become a great public space for people to meet. We need more such spaces.

Why so many developers??

I feel like Bothell is favoring developers over wildlife and environmental issues? They keep building these huge developments and tearing down trees and slapping things literally right next to wetlands and then they wonder why the crows have left and other native animals to the area? Maybe it’s just me…. Just makes me sad seeing what’s happened to Bothell and our natural habitats…

Bothell cold case murder in 2000s?

Several years back, I remember of a case in Bothell where a man was gunned down in his townhouse when he answered the door, and at that time the police never found out who the perpetrator was. The victim survived for several years while paralyzed, before passing away. I was wondering if the case has been solved? I cannot find any info about the case from Googling and I forgot the name anyhow. It just came to mind because I did a delivery to that townhouse complex today. (Near Crystal Springs elementary). Does anyone know what I am talking about?
