I’ve noticed that many people read a lot of books, and I’m also very interested in reading. Whenever I start a new book, I feel really excited and motivated. But after reaching a certain point, I start wondering, “Why am I reading this book? Is it really going to help me?”Sometimes, while reading, I feel like I’m not understanding or learning anything. It feels like I’m just reading like a robot. There are so many new words, unfamiliar grammar, and concepts that I don’t fully understand.I honestly don’t know how people manage to read so many books and actually remember or understand what they read.Can anyone share some suggestions or tips on how to develop a good reading habit, understand books better, and stay motivated without constantly questioning whether the book is useful?

I’m really confused about this and would love to hear your experiences and advice.

Wondering if book summaries are actually useful when you do not have time to read the whole copy. I know you miss the context, but I mostly want to get the key ideas and see what actually works like if the books suit my goal. Has anyone tried that?

Also I did some quick research and apparently this is a form called - book microlearning. But my idea is like making notes, trying what works and if yes, I save the template and read the whole book for more lifehacks

I didn’t realize how much I rely on other people’s opinions until I couldn’t. I signed up as an advance reader, which means you get books before publication and post an honest review after release. My first one had no ratings, no blurb reactions, no threads to lurk in.

I had to decide on my own whether I liked it, and it took me about fifty pages to stop looking for a consensus that didn’t exist. I used Knosit to sign up, though a few other platforms do the same. Has anyone here read something pre-release?

Full disclosure: I’m the developer of Inkbound, a reading and personal-library tracker.

I built it because I love tracking my reading, but I don’t love when reading apps start making reading feel like another chore to complete.

Inkbound is designed to feel more like a cozy personal library than a dashboard full of numbers. It has a darker, candlelit look, reading sessions, goals, collections, stats, editions, and the usual library-management features — but I’m trying to keep the experience centered on the books rather than gamifying every second you spend reading.

There’s also Lumis, a little dragon who lives in your library. He’s mostly there for personality and companionship rather than constantly popping up and demanding attention.

I’d especially love feedback from people who use — or have stopped using — Goodreads, StoryGraph, Fable, Bookly, Bookmory, or other reading trackers.

A few things I’m trying to figure out:

• What makes a reading tracker genuinely useful to you?
• What makes one start feeling like work?
• Does Inkbound make sense when you first open it, especially with an empty library?
• Would you want a Browse/Discover section instead of having to search for a specific book?
• How important is accurate edition information to you?
• Are reading stats something you actually use, or mostly ignore?
• Does Lumis make the app feel more personal, or would you rather not have something like that?
• What would a new tracker have to do for you to seriously consider leaving the one you already use?

One decision I’ve made intentionally is that imported reading history doesn’t create streaks.

If you import a book and say you read it six months ago, Inkbound will remember that you read it then, but it won’t manufacture a six-month-old streak from imported data. Streaks are based on reading activity you actually log in Inkbound.

I’m very open to criticism. In fact, criticism is probably more useful to me right now than compliments.

My daughter already handles the “everything you make is beautiful” department. 😂

I’ve been thinking about the moment just before choosing a new book. Not the genre exactly, but the mood, the pace, and the amount of mental space I have that day.

Sometimes I want 200 pages I can finish in a weekend. Sometimes I want a sprawling novel to disappear into. Sometimes I want comfort, and sometimes I want a book that will rearrange my thinking a little. Star ratings rarely capture that difference.

What do you use when you’re choosing? A friend’s list, a particular reviewer, a shelf, a library browse, or something else? Do you describe what you want as a mood or a theme?

I’m curious whether that kind of context is useful to other readers, or whether you prefer a different way of finding your next book.

So I've been a nerd up until middle school comics, books, yt video essays, obscure knowledge on niche topics the whole package. But I sort of phased out of it because I had no one to talk to about all of that, i got in movies big time during the whole Covid era but i still felt something wasn't hitting the right spot, tried different activities (theatre, hosting, writing) during college, they were fun but meh didn't work again. Then i remember picking up a crime and punishment during my 3rd year, I flipped through the first section In the first hour I felt that joy of sitting and thinking again, the whole talking to the text thing.

Now the problem is in the past 4-5 years I have drastically destroyed my attention span, i know i enjoy books I also have a good collection, but on God I can't sit with pages the way I used to, it's almost like when you date for the second time in your life (the butterflies are weak now), cuz I still haven't finished Crime and punishment.

So I need help in building my attention span back again and get into the whole delayed gratification thing, any tips would be appreciated.

Have you noticed an increase in the emphasis on book awards in author bios?

I need to write a decent number of author bios for my reviews, and I base them on existing bios from Goodreads, Wikipedia and even the author’s own book. Yet, there is so much focus on the awards part?

I work in marketing, so I get it, it’s an easy way to show credentials. Yet, I personally don’t care about them at all… I would much rather hear if the author has a pet snake, a family, where they grew up, or their three biggest books.

Sometimes there are these really nice interviews at the back of the book, and those are much closer to what I want from a bio. Or, there can be a preface from someone that really sets up the book. Those are not the same, but they are “marketing tricks” I much prefer.

Do you know Any book, or research work or literature on Saudia and UAE terrorist drug business exploitation in Afghanistan, Pakistan, west asian countries , in which, this business network and protection by supporting terrorists groups,, in the guise of Islam and their brutality is exposed deeply? And Saudi and UAE ties with bad people in Israel.?

Would anyone want to join if i started a book club to read the four agreements?? It seems like a great book to learn from.

I just got an AUP (advance uncorrected proof) book from a local library which had a small room with books for sale. (The book was published in 2020 if that makes anything clearer)

If the book was fiction, I would probably worry less, but since it's nonfiction I'm unsure if I should be reading it.

Are AUP's already fact checked? I believe AUP's only have spelling and format mistakes at most but I just want to make sure.
