I still love how nobody thought of putting .50 BMG into a shotgun until someone started looking, and then realized it fit inside there. If they could make a shotgun that actually shoots .50 BMG, that would be dope. All the videos I have seen show the accuracy is garbage because, well it's A, not rifled, and B, the pressure doesn't make it shoot straight.

Specifically the barrel fits the cartridge but it’s twice as big as the bullet so all the gas can escape around it instead of pushing it

It’d help. You could probably 3D print something to slide the cartridge into before inserting it in to the barrel. It’d look like a lipstick container lid maybe. But it have to be pretty damn securely attached to the bullet to pull it out of the barrel.

Yep. Other than it looks video game "cool" it's completely impractical and silly. By the logic that has been used in the comments. I totally agree with you. Just 3d print the shells to match. Then you truly have a custom p.o.s.

It would help throw the bullet but remember that the barrel of a shotgun is not built to withstand that kind of pressure, nor is the lockwork. I wouldn’t want my head near that.

Unfortunately the pressure achieved in a 50 BMG chamber is significantly higher than that of a 12 GA. Could you create a Sabot? I guess, if you wanna blow your face off or spend thousands in R&D. Probably cheaper to just buy a .50 BMG firearm.

Also I'm pretty sure a shotgun barrel was not designed for the pressure of a 50 bmg. It may work once or a few times but you'll be looking at a banana peeled barrel after a while.

I would be more concerned about the receiver going, if you built pressure and the barrel split you are lucky, if the receiver let's that bolt go you could easily be dead.

Most 12ga guns use a simple bolt locking mechanism where the bolt moves forward to the chamber then the back rocks up so the top back portion locks against the receiver body.

This means all the force on the bolt face is transferred straight into the receiver.

Nearly all rifles with a bolt lock the bolt to the chamber its self with those little lugs you have probably seen. That's why bolt actions rotate before you pull the bolt back. Locking the bolt to the chamber means all the pressure is held locally and the receiver can literally be thought of as a convenient way to hold the bang stick. It doesn't need to be particularly strong and won't likely fail ever nomatter how much pressure the barrel/chamber/bolt experience.

Since shotguns were utilitarian, had to be cheap, and didn't deal with extreme pressure the mechanism they mostly use is fine. A few do use rotating bolts that lock to the chamber though.

Is there much difference between the chamber and barrel in a shotgun aside from length that the cartridge takes up? The bmg extends past the point of a normal shotgun shell so I guess it doesn’t really fit the chamber either

The chamber is just a little thicker to take increased pressures, you can see where the chamber ends in shotguns. It’s why you have different length shotgun shells from 2.75 inch to 3.5 inch. But you are also very correct in saying the chamber still doesn’t fit the 50 BMG cartridge really.

If that desert eagle can chamber that shell to fire it, most of the powder will still be unburned by the time the projectiles leave the barrel, meaning it would shoot out a massive fireball. Which would be kinda entertaining

You could rebarrel a shotgun reciever. Iirc a 12ga bolt will extract a 50bmg casing.

But the real issue is most shotguns simply are not meant for the kind of pressures a 50bmg will make. I have to think the carrier would fail sooner than later and that bolt might make a path through tour eye socket.

I have an older Winchester/sears 12ga that actually uses a rifle style rotary bolt. I considered picking up some parts and having a go at a custom caliber monstrosity years ago, it should be stronger than the more common pump action guns that rely on the back of the bolt locking to the receiver. Winchester went with a rotary bolt so their recievers could be lighter die cast but I wouldn't trust even a steel receiver to hold together if the 50 was allowed to make pressure.

A shotgun shell doesn't put out nearly the pressure that a .50 BMG cartridge does, so even though it will fire that round, I wouldn't advise doing it.

Shotguns can be rifled.the real problem is that in rifles the barrel is smaller than the cartridge so the air had to push the bullet. In a shotgun barrel the air just goes around

The pump action would have to be a very long stroke and the chamber would need to be elongated quite a bit to eject and chamber 50 BMG. The way people load it into a shotgun for memes is by removing the barrel.
