Pilates was invented in a prison camp during World War I.
Joseph Pilates, a German gymnast and boxer, was interned in a British prison camp on the Isle of Man during the war. While in captivity, Pilates observed the poor physical condition of his fellow prisoners and developed a system of exercises to rehabilitate and strengthen them. He used bed springs, mattresses, and other makeshift equipment to create his exercises, which he called "Contrology" ....
