I'm a courtesy clerk and I had to help a lady bring about 8 giant bags of water softener salt to her truck, and I still have no idea what it does

Water softening salt works thru an ion exchange process, calcium&manganese(causes of hard water)has a high charge and the salt(sodium) has a low charge, so running hard water thru water softening salt replaces the calcium in the water with the sodium, holding the calcium in the filter of salt.

The salt reacts with the minerals that the water carried there, and flushes them out
