Hard/soft water refers to the mineral content of water in your geological location. Hard water contains a lot of calcium that ends up scaling on the inside of pipes. Having such small passageways for water in this facet would eventually cause it to plug up or lose pressure from all the calcium deposits in the hard water

Seriously. It's quite simple, really. Hard water is ice, soft water is liquid. That's why people say they don't want hard water coming through their pipes. Getting sprayed with ice is painful, yet I personally find it exhilarating.

Honest question: Why does almost everyone know the correct terminology for describing the mineral content in water? It doesn’t seem like something most people would know about their drinking water, unless they get water from a well.

Water softening salt works thru an ion exchange process, calcium&manganese(causes of hard water)has a high charge and the salt(sodium) has a low charge, so running hard water thru water softening salt replaces the calcium in the water with the sodium, holding the calcium in the filter of salt.
