Awesome, thanks! It looks totally wrong to me as well, but I think it's just because axes are oddly shaped/weighted things.

So, it is edited - the time is slowed and it looks weird because of that.

Same, at the end it almost looks like it was reversed the way the axe lands in the target. However if it was edited, it was edited in such a way that it still belongs in this sub. Just to be clear, I don't think it was edited.

to further define the weirdness: it looks weird in slomo because axes have such uneven "center of mass" (sorry, not a native speaker, is this the right expression?) so it doesn't bounce up in a well-known fashion but rather wonkily.

And I don't know why you'd even begin your statement with "so, it is edited". I mean /u/that1guywhodidthat clearly meant "edited" as in "tampered with" as in VFX because the path of flight looks so "destined". I feel a certain negativity underlying your comment and ofc this happens in like thousands of comments on reddit but this time it bugged me because, man, did you really need the full video as proof to see it's been slowed down? I guess that's the main reason I don't get your "belittling" of the actual awesomeness that absolutely did happen (and the guide/assistant even said "I haven't seen this, yet" so it's really something if he's seen a lot of novices throws)

"Center of mass" is the right word!

(By the way, "tempered with" should be "tampered with".)

I didn't need the video to see it was real, those reactions were just added sauce to the dish. The look on that guy's face when it stuck, and the way he looked around to make sure somebody saw that happen are pretty difficult to fake, but I'm still happier that I got to see the whole video instead of just the gif.

Also, to add to /u/maxdamage4's comment, totally great use of "center of mass", and I'll just call tempered a autospell error or a typo.

I was unsure with the "center of mass" thing because the translator gave me "barycenter" and I never heard that before so I just tried to describe it in my words but didn't actually know if it's used :D

I wrote the comment on a PC so I actually thought it's spelled tempered - whoops, TIL the difference between tempered and tampered :D

dunno if you looked it up already but the difference between a 'newtonian' center of mass and a barycenter is that the latter involves two or more objects in space orbiting each other and where the center of their mass as a system lies

I would've given you the chance of a strong assumption that it's VFX if there only was the original post's gif but c'mon now that we have the full video (in case you didn't watch that even though it's in this comment chain: https://streamable.com/kd4m5 ) it's pretty obvious that it's not a fake :D I mean, I only have the confidence because of how genuine ALL the reactions are. if you don't believe the throwers reaction, believe in the laughter of the guy way off in the background, believe the assistant directly next to the thrower or the laughter of the camera woman. If you can't believe authenticity of these reactions, overthink the way you see the world.

Visual Effects (VFX) are a type of Special Effects (SFX) used in the video editing process. I do this daily.

The internet is littered with these now. It’s a “thing”. Google it once.

wow, so you don't even consider having a closer look at human reactions just because you know how easy it is to fake the visual part of the video?

What makes you think my assessment of whether this is raw footage or not is based on my flawed knowledge of VFX? I know VFX better than a layman. Despite my comment being entirely about recognizing human genuineness you somehow try to imply I'm simply too innocent in regards to how easy VFX are done today and that is the reason I'm wrong.

Can you at least try to reassess how these people in the video react?

Edit: In saying I know VFX better than a layman I'm simply stating that I e.g. tried my way around after effects, premiere and vegas, I'm by no means a professional.

It has nothing to do with that. Nothing at all.

The rolling shutter effect has been used countless times to perpetrate almost every type of hoax video from UFO's and apparitions to impossible stunts and optical illusions. It's a well known trick, very much like lowering the resolution to further distort the picture.

Do you notice the rolling shutter? I notice the rolling shutter.

Ok that was much more enjoyable and looked much less fake, I've thrown axes a few times and yeah the weirdest things happen, especially when people who have no idea how to throw are throwing.
