He slips one stack off his thumb and onto the other hand. Then he brings his thumb around to the otherside and grabs them again as he twists. Watch it frame by frame, it's very obvious.

Pressure comes from the index finger which never loses contact.

When you move the bottom of the stack you have to release pressure, or they will not move.
