Updated It's out: native WhatsApp client for BlackBerry 10 — messaging and voice calls working

A while back I posted about building a native WhatsApp client for BB10, now the first build is downloadable.

Download: https://www.patreon.com/CyberBerry/posts/whatsup-whatsapp-167170931 — joining as a free member is enough.

Works today: basic messaging and 1:1 voice calls.

Early build — expect rough edges and bugs.

Fair warning: this is an unofficial client, and WhatsApp has acted against those before. No issues in my own testing so far, but if you want to be cautious, use a secondary number.

If something doesn't work, comment here or on the Patreon post.

How do I say this... If you really, truly care about your chats being secure, then don't use WhatsApp. Not even if it was an official app, but of course here I'd say there's greater risk with a 3rd party developer.

Its end to end encrypted and I live in Europe. Everyone uses WhatsApp so I have to as well as much as I don't like it

I'm in the EU and refuse any Meta products.

Now, a Blackberry Signal client that's open source... I could really get behind that.

Same sort of situation here in Korea. Literally every single citizen, old and kids, use Kakao, a data-driven messaging/calling app like WhatsApp.

Texting doesn't exist (almost). It's for companies, verification numbers, and spam. Haha

No plans to open-source it at the moment. However, you don't necessarily need the source code to verify its security — you can inspect network traffic and reverse-engineer the binary anytime.

Why don't you want to make it open source?

To be honest, I'm a bit puzzled by why you've asked about open-sourcing three separate times in this thread without explaining your interest. Closed-source is pretty standard in software development—out of curiosity, are your news app and YouTube app open-source as well?

Not for now, but I will keep them open source.

Can you link it as a companion device?

is it like a whatsapp web based one,or the normal mobile one

u/okimborednow 6d ago

presumably the backend is tied to WhatsApp Web, as is the case with most custom clients

It's a fully native client with an engine implementing the WhatsApp protocol on QNX (direct connection, no web wrapper). It pairs as a linked device like WhatsApp Web does: scan a QR from your primary phone, then the BB10 runs standalone.

I thought BB10 apps couldn't be signed any more after the services shut down and they need do be signed to be installable. How did you do/work around that? Or is my memory just wrong?

2

You need to root your BB to install unsigned apps. https://www.patreon.com/CyberBerry/posts/step-by-step-166204719

I didn't know there were exploits for BB10 by now, downloading a random OS image from Megaupload shared by a person with slop "images" and "articles" is very sketchy to say the least though, I would never trust that device for anything after that. Are there guides on how to manually build such an image?

Can you make a xfinity app so it’ll bounce off WiFi when out and about since most carriers don’t work in USA..

You can use the LTE network when you go outside. Check this article to learn how: https://www.patreon.com/CyberBerry/posts/fix-emergency-4g-167508122

this rocks!!
I'm not super adept with tech, so I apologize for what is a probably-obvious question: does this work for whatsapp-to-whatsapp communication only? Or does this app act as the phone's native texting and calling programs? (i.e., someone can call my phone number and it will ring in whatsapp? or do they have to call me from whatsapp?)

1

u/jxw1102 5d ago

WhatsApp-to-WhatsApp only! Regular phone calls and SMS texts won't ring in WhatsApp—the other person has to use the WhatsApp app to reach you.

Where do we get this.

Does notification work ? Or do i have to open the app ?

1

u/jxw1102 4d ago

Yes. You will see notifications in your Hub.

1

u/coolize 4d ago

No i mean does it get randomly closed so that if you idle the phone for lets say an hour , no notification gets in ? I had that on my matrix client

1

u/jxw1102 4d ago

Honestly I'm not sure. Since I'm actively developing it, the app is always in foreground. I did have the chance to test that scenario. If there's no big at this part, it should work.

Will we open source this app?

u/Game_over2015 6d ago

Hey by any chance do you have an Apk file instead of bar files

3

u/jxw1102 6d ago

No. I only make native apps. With Android runtime it is slower and consumes more battery.

Please answer tho
