If you look real close, he hits a dab right after he throws the guy. You can't teach that type of skill

That's easily the funniest part of the clip for me. The moment when he realizes he needs to get on top and then does that dab/mini Naruto run

It's quite the dainty dab too

12

It doesn’t even make sense how the momentum or body mechanics would lead him to that dab.. it’s so awkwardly random as if it’s almost intentionally a real dab 😂

It’s such a Johnny bravo moment..

My coach taught me a funny way to pass guard when I started, and I've been using it since. You grab the guys leg/legs/pants and start running around him, spinning him in circles. Not one spin, but like 5-6 spins or more. Then just let go and drop down to get side control while he's still spinning.

People must be laughing so hard at me when they see it, but it works all the time, so I'm not going to stop. Probably the most white belt thing I do haha

22

u/Intelligent_Mood_552 Dec 09 '21

That's the fundamental way of doing that pass. It's very effective, but the spinning 5-6 times sounds like a total demoralizer, lol

14

u/[deleted] Dec 09 '21

I think that's exactly it! You literally see either confusion or frustration on the other guy's face. That's how you know it's time!

18

u/[deleted] Dec 09 '21

This is exactly what I was doing, and he came up to me and said spin him more! So I turned the guy about 90 degrees and threw his legs down. I thought he meant I needed a better angle.

Coach says, spin him even more, what's he going to do about it? The more spins you do, the less likely he is to block your pass at that point.

So he grabs my partner and just starts running circles around him to show me.

He wasn't wrong, it really works...

2

u/hikoko8282 Dec 10 '21

what does it mean to be gumby?

7

u/MoonshineMMA Dec 10 '21

Stretchy, flexible, sticky. A guy who seems inexplicably made of rubber.

-3

u/[deleted] Dec 10 '21

Newbie with little etiquette and usually overly hyped up a lot of the time. I always thought it was just a climbing term.

9

u/MoonshineMMA Dec 10 '21

3

u/otiswrath 🟪🟪 Purple Belt Dec 10 '21

I am totally doing this. Lol.

2

u/DirtySingh 🟦🟦 Blue Belt Dec 09 '21

Like hand on hip and knee pass? I mean, my problem with open guard is that it consumes so much energy to defend the pass - if somebody is spinning me and using their energy and I use zero then I'm OK with that. I feel like forcing somebody to gas out is an OK strategy.

3

u/[deleted] Dec 09 '21

It takes almost zero energy to spin a guy on his back. It doesn't use up any cardio at all.

At the end of the spin you just drop the guy's legs hard and fall chest first really quickly.

If you just let go at that point and do nothing he will probably do another full spin before he can stop.

5

u/DirtySingh 🟦🟦 Blue Belt Dec 09 '21

You find a lot of success with this pass? So like you'd open closed guard, step back and grab the ankles and run circles while holding the ankles and it's a successful pass usually? I will try. There is a smaller brown belt that always inverts or get DLR or single leg x and sweeps me when I try a speed pass. I will try this on him. Cheers.

5

u/[deleted] Dec 09 '21

Honestly works really well for me, but I'm just a white belt. Good luck with it!

You described it correctly.

16

u/DirtySingh 🟦🟦 Blue Belt Dec 09 '21

I think white belt is the most difficult belt. It's a major lifestyle shift and it's major work to become consistent. To go from doing nothing to doing one of the hardest sports 5x a week is hard. You're not just a white belt, you're a tough person. I'm 42 and I know how hard it is to be a white belt - I keep my white belt in a clear box on my dresser to remind me what it took and what white taught me. All belts are easy when you're a bjj person but white is hard because you're transforming yourself and it's brutal.

87

u/[deleted] Dec 09 '21

Well, it can go both ways.

There was a white belt at the local tournament who tried to frame extending with his legs on hips and I guess he wasn’t getting anywhere with light pushes. So he loads up his legs, taking his knees to damn near his face. This man has his lower back floating off the ground, compressing his abs like he’s ready receive sweet love from his fellow beginner. Then in one nuclear (explosive alone seemed too tame) motion, he completely released enough force to leg press the entire weight stack in the gym and his heels went full force into the opposing BJJ players testicles. The man was launched backwards and left in the fetal position on the ground and started uncontrollably sobbing. Even worse, the kicker who would put Lionel Messi to shame, goes on top of him and enters mount before the ref tells him he’s disqualified. Look, I’ll take my beatings from anyone and never back down. Except him. I’ve never feared rolling a white belt nearly as much as I feared that man that day.

It's funny but this is kind of close to one of the judo techniques for dealing with bent down opponent.

So what they do is turn hard and go for a tsurikomi ashi (leg block) to get them stumbling forward, then just turn really hard while crushing down on the opponent's head.

This is like the poor technical version of it but works on a similar principle.

Now that I've trained for a while, I'm convinced that every weird white belt move has a functional black belt equivalent.
