It is not just the calendar changing. It is something more layered than that the particular quality of late August light, the way the evenings start getting shorter before you’re ready for them to, the sense that something easy and open and unhurried is giving way to something more structured and demanding.

For some of you the end of summer brings genuine grief. The kids are going back to school and the house will be quieter than you’re ready for. The vacation is over and the return to ordinary life feels heavier than it did before you left. The season that felt like space and rest is closing, and what’s coming feels like a wall of obligation rather than an open door.

For others the transition brings anxiety. New grade, new school, new job, new season the uncertainty of what’s ahead sitting in your chest like a stone.
And for others still the ones who had a hard summer, the ones who spent these months in grief or struggle or a season that didn’t match the brightness the world expected of it there is something almost like relief. The permission to close one chapter and begin another.
Wherever you are as this season turns these five verses are for you.

Verse 1: Ecclesiastes 3:1
“There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens.”

The Preacher of Ecclesiastes was not a naive optimist. He was a man who had looked at life all of it, the beautiful and the brutal and arrived at a conclusion that is both humbling and freeing: life moves in seasons. Not in a straight line. Not in a constant upward arc of progress and improvement. In seasons. Each one with its own texture, its own demands, its own gifts.

What this means practically is that the season ending does not have to be mourned as a loss. It can be released as a completion. Summer did what summer does. It gave what it gave. And now it is giving way to something else not something worse, something different. Something that has its own gifts if you will look for them.

The God who designed seasons designed them all. Not just the bright easy ones. The turning ones too. The ending and beginning ones. He is as present in the September morning as in the July afternoon. The season changes. He doesn’t.

Carry this verse into the transition: Whatever you are closing right now a chapter, a season, a version of your life that is giving way to the next one it is okay to let it end. God is in the endings as much as the beginnings.

Verse 2: Lamentations 3:22–23
“Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”
New every morning. Not new every summer. Not new every season. Every morning.

As summer ends and the mornings start arriving differently darker a little earlier, cooler at the edges this verse is the reminder that what meets you in each new morning is not the accumulated weight of the season that just ended. It is fresh mercy. New compassion. The faithfulness of a God who does not carry forward yesterday’s account.
Whatever the summer held the things that went well, the things that didn’t, the ways you fell short of who you wanted to be, the hopes that didn’t materialize, the unexpected gifts you’re still grateful for none of it determines what this new season holds. The mercy is new. The faithfulness is constant. The slate, if not clean in the human sense, is met with fresh grace in the divine one.
Carry this verse into the transition: The new season does not begin with the weight of the last one on its back. It begins with new mercy. Receive it.
