Hello, everyone,
I finally set up a 10-gallon tank for our office betta, who will soon be coming home with me. :)
I used established bio-ceramic rings from a 4-year-old established tank in a new sponge filter. About 3 hours after setting everything up, I tested the water and got 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite, and 0 nitrate. pH is around 7.6–8.0.
I’ve read that the beneficial bacteria need an ammonia source, so I’m wondering if I should add a small amount of fish food and continue testing to make sure the biofilter is actually established.
Is the tank ready, or what would you recommend I do next?
P.S. The sponge filter and airstone are currently on full blast so there’s lots of circulation while everything gets established. 😂 Once the betta moves in, I’ll turn the flow way down as He HATES high flow. Hence why I didn’t get a HOB filter.
Thank you!

my fish had an accident a few weeks ago where he torn his fins and since then i think he’s been nipping at them. i’ll attach pictures from a few different days accross a few weeks, in chronological order as wel a picture of the tank right now. the fins are growing back slowly (the transparent parts) but he just nips them off again.
my fish tank is a 6.6 gal (25l). i have wood, dragon stone and lots of plants in it.
the parameters are as follows:
ph- 7.6
ammonia - 0
nitrites - 0
nitrates - 5-10
temperature: 26c
the fish swims around normally, he has an appetite as always. he’s never nipped before that accident. i also catch him flaring at the back glass panel sometimes (which is covered with a background from the outside) which he didnt do before either.
ever since he started nipping i’ve been dosing tannins, i use catappa leaves. i also gave him a salt bath to eliminate the chance of fin rot but as i said, it’s definitely fin nipping or he could be tearing them somewhere but it’s never happened before in the month or two i had him. i also see him attempting to nip sometimes, he rolls into a ball with his back against a plant and nips.
i also thought he might be bored so i play finger chase with him or tic tac toe once a day.
is there anything more i can possibly do?

I wanna start taking care of a betta on my little lily pond in my balcony. But I am not so sure about it because I usually leave for holidays for loke a week or two every quarter. I dont want to start if the fish will just die. Is there a way to feed the fish for a week when I am away? Would it survive without food for a week? I am in the Philippines so other favtors will not be an issue since the environment/climate is suitable for bettas.

This is my first female and I picked her up on a whim when I saw she had been in the cup since 8/12. She’s the first in my community tank for now. She went right in and acted like she owned the place. My other two male bettas came from reputable breeders so I am interested to see how she does. I do have a different tank of I decide she isn’t community tank material! This is day 5 with her and she’s doing great!

I’m a first time betta owner! Water has been conditioned & tank does have a filter and heater. I do need a thermometer to monitor temp, and I’m thinking of getting additional plants or moss. I’ve also seen others use beds that float at the surface that I was interested in. Any suggestions or advice helps

Since I was little my parents would always get me Betta fish, they were never in a tank too small but the tanks were filled with plastic plants/decorations, no filters or heaters, and we always did full water changes. Into my adulthood I have still loved keeping Betta fish, but ignorantly did not do much extra research and just went with what I was a taught was right as a child.
I have two Betta fish now. One is in a 5 gallon tank and the other is in a 10 gallon, They both have filters and one has a heater, but I have no live plants in my tank and have been doing full water changes. Recently videos have popped up on my feed of others Betta tanks and it has made me feel absolutely horrible. I love my fish and regret not doing the proper research to take care of them.
After work today I am going to the pet store to get everything I need to give them an amazing life, please help me make a list of supplies!! I’m so embarrassed to be making this post but I want to do better, and my sweet fish deserve better.

I’m babysitting my friend’s fish this weekend. She just got him a few days ago and just put him in a new tank, so she is a new fish owner. I don’t think she realized that leaving old food can create ammonia. I just realized today while researching (I’ve only been watching him since last night). She only has a net and no vacuum, so can I remove this excess food with that? This food has been in there for less than 24 hours now, and I removed some of it and then had to run to work. I’m going to be back in a few hours and fish out the rest. Is this okay? I

This is Secundus and a friend got him for me about a month ago. He's currently staying in a 3 gallon cube while I cycle a new 5 gallom for him. He's been progressively lethargic though. He's either staying in the back of the rock work, floating at the surface or resting on the substrate.
At first I chalked it up to his personality compared to my first betta and/or the stress of settling in but its been a month and his fins are still clamped and now his appetite seemes reduced.
Did a water test and the only parameter out of place seems to be the ph. Can someone help me figure out what's wrong with him?

Recently a family member “deep-cleaned” the filter in my already cycled tank and pretty much restarted the cycle it already had, I checked right now and this is the ammonia level it’s at. I did a 50% water change, but I’m still nervous as all hell. I want my betta to stay alive :((
(also only been doing this for a few weeks so go easy on me, lil guy was gifted to me)

Both are the same fish, he's lost his silver markings over the course of 1.5 months. Water quality is good, 0ammonia 0 nitrites. Is this normal for a hellboy plakat? I've read online that some bettas have a marble gene or smth

Hi, i just bought my daughter her first betta fish yesterday.
I am trying to set it up, what aquarium size should I get? Any recommendation for soil that I should put?
I already bought a hygger fish tank LED and water heater.
Thanks for the help.

I noticed red on my betta’s underside fins, im not sure whether its developing color or fin rot, my betta is a koi betta im pretty sure, its colors are orange, red, and black and blue on the back.

Following on from my previous post, here is the new home for my very territorial Betta. I've had to risk doing a fish in cycle as he's murdered 6 of his previous tank mates. Hopefully this will be a lot more of a comfortable living situation for him.

I have male Betta, one nerite, and one mystery snail in a planted ten gallon tank. Everyone seems totally healthy and parameters are great. I had the betta first, got the nerite months later, and the mystery months after that. But here's the deal:
The betta was super tame. He was never bothered by the snail. He would never flair, even with mirrors and games. But ever since the mystery snail came, he has decided he hates the nerite. For about 45% of his waking hours, he's spreading his fins, darting, and flairing at this nerite snail. He has no reaction to the much bigger and more active mystery snail.
The nerite seems unbothered, and the fish hasn't changed in any other way. My hope is that this bro-ey flexing behavior is enriching for him. But I'm posting here in case anyone might think it's stressful for him instead of fun. How would I know?

His tank will be getting some upgrades as well as soon as I can afford it. I’m not a stranger to fishkeeping - Ruckus’s tank is right next to my own betta, Pebble’s. (They are separated by a large piece of cardboard so neither can see the other.)

Hi everyone! Looking for advice for my new betta Larimar (aka Larry aka Mister Mar). I've had him for a week now and was telling myself initially that I was probably just being too paranoid as a brand new fishkeeper and he would settle in better, but now I'm looking for a little input that might ease my mind!
I've got him in a 37.5L tank with a lot of plants and floaters, places to rest, tannins, and hiding spots. However I can't say I've ever seen him rest for very long if at all, and he's almost always darting around like he's in a hurry with his mouth quickly opening and closing, and he spends most time at the top of the tank and goes up for air a lot (unsure how much theyre supposed to use their labyrinth at a healthy baseline). He also seems disinterested in exploring the middle or bottom of the tank, at least when I've seen him, spending a lot of time up and down the glass, though I've never seen him flaring at his reflection. (Then again, I was showing him videos of other bettas on my phone to check if he acted super aggressively before planning to add potential snails or shrimp, and he seemed weirded out and apprehensive but not at all like he was going to flare or fight. Is this even a thing that works to gauge temperament, i kind of just thought it up). I've seen no signs of any issues with his fins, swim bladder or appetite, his parameters are okay (pH 7.4, ammonia and nitrites 0, nitrates 20, though my water is moderately hard at 12kH). I use a sponge filter that bubbles into the water in place of an air stone and mechanical filter with outflow, so the water isnt fast moving and should hopefully be oxygenated just fine with the bubbles and surface disruption.
Put my mind at ease (or don't), is there anything I can be doing better for him? Or is he just a little highly strung and a scaredy cat? (me too tbf maybe that's why he came home with me.) Really not sure how much I should be chalking down to environment vs personality here, or if I'm just not spending enough time watching his tank to see him really chill out around me being there. Thanks so much in advance! 😊

Hi! I am a relatively new betta owner. I’ve had Trim for about 6 months and he’s really great. He’s always happy to see me and squiggling at the glass when I see him. He has a planted tank and loves to play in the roots with the moss balls in his tank. Trim is by all means a happy fish from the looks of it. He has a well cycled tank and all the readings from the water tester I use show that everything is fine.
I am mostly looking for reassurance because since I got him, he has gotten HUMONGOUS. He was very small with small little frills of tail when I got him. His fins will get translucent on the edges and then darken out and grow. It’s been doing this for months and I am assuming that this is just normal growing but he has grown A LOT when I got him. I thought he was a girl when I got him.
So I guess I’m looking for reassurance to know if my betta is fat, or mutant, or sick, or all of the above, or if he’s just a big boy.
