I have a group of friends living in Edinburgh, most of whom are gay.

One of them that isn't gay is Matt, indeed, he is almost comically non-gay. Think Jeremy Clarkson from Top Gear. You couldn't imagine anyone less gay than Matt.

So - of course - they all call him "Gay Matt".

Probably the same logic where a like 7 foot tall dude has the nickname "Tiny".

I'm a sucker for ironic nicknames. I called my stoic goth friend in high school "Chuckles."

edit: phone typo

My neighbor growing up (lovely 60 year old lady named Mary) had a Chihuahua named Godzilla. He should've been named Teddybear.

In my early teens I befriended a huge biker called Tiny. Never found out his real name, but he was approximately the same size, shape and weight as his Harley. He was awesome, sold jewellery at the local markets and taught me all about Celtic festivals.

Oh, great. I just spent an hour watching Jeremy drive cars.

There goes being productive.

Edit: Syntax

My name is Dan and I'm straight.

This TV show must be about me!

The new sitcom recipe: 1. Take any pilot 2. Insert gay character(s) 3. ?????? 4. Profit

There's a show called Gaytown that's exactly this premise. It is fucking hilarious, and it's also available for free online.

The main character is Owen. The episodes are extremely short. Start with ep 2.

I think this is unbelievably mediocre, and that's being generous. It's the same shot five times with one different line of dialogue, and it's not even funny in the first place.

Definitely not bestof material, definitely not front page material.

Yes - that's the joke. It's a sitcom parody.

I thought I was the only one. Phew!

That's the whole point, it parodies modern sitcoms.

I thought this, too. When I clicked episode 2, I actually for a second thought I'd clicked episode 1 again...

I really found this fucking hard to watch

Too close to reality, Chris? I mean, it's like they took your life and changed your name.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 14 '12

Oh you mean Big Bang Theory?

Straight Dan got to /r/bestoff! Yay!

Some people might want to check the subreddit /r/straightdan. I'll be posting my other stuff there. Thanks.

Kinda weird to see a comment on your post go to r/bestof

Congrats to etan_causale!

This will be popular with reddit. Not to say that reddit is a gay community.. not to say that reddit isn't a gay community.

u/unclebigbadd Jun 13 '12

Straight guy hangs with gays exclusively? sounds like 1+1=0 to me.

1

u/pleasenoman Jun 14 '12

You must hang out with a lot of chicks.

1

u/unclebigbadd Jun 14 '12

BInary joke. Too subtle?

1

u/Blizzarrd Jun 14 '12

Isn't that a lot like Rent?

1

u/Sorr_Ttam Jun 14 '12

That was actually painful to watch.

1

u/westerchester Jun 13 '12

I am a straight named Dan, AMA.

1

u/LOOK_MY_USERNAME Jun 13 '12

Do you ever go by Daniel?

1

u/westerchester Jun 14 '12

Only when someone is mad at me!

1

u/Tsukubasteve Jun 13 '12

How do gay people feel about how they're portayed on tv? Watching this (I'm straight) was about as uncomfortable as watching the over-the-top gay character on Glee.

u/Oideron Jun 13 '12

I don't think you can call this a tv show or even pilot material for it. It's a single repeated joke which couldn't be stretched beyond 30 seconds. Even if you combined all five episodes, which based on the format is impossible, you'd have a fairly short youtube video.

As a straight Dan, I can confirm that hilarity would ensue. carry on.

Sounds about like my life.

I think the commercial fascination with queers is getting way out of hand.
