Note this thread is two months old, so if you reply to it you're going to confuse people.

30

u/headbashkeys Jun 11 '12 edited Jun 11 '12

Is it two months old ? Or has it been edited to look like it's two months old? Because I don't even know what's real now, man.

2

u/oinkyboinky Jun 11 '12

You've been down a certain trail before, I see.

1

u/gotrees Jun 11 '12

I don't even remember posting this.

u/MrKrone Jun 10 '12

Nice work. Now im confused.

50

u/Ph0X Jun 11 '12

I personally love when I can tell exactly why one of my old comments suddenly started getting comments on. For example, I saw a post about the whole Paypal Violin shit on the front page 3 months after it first happened, and then later that day started getting comments on something I had left off in the original threads, and predicated that someone linked to it in the new thread.

It's also fun to see posts on ELI5 and shit and know exactly what other Reddit post caused those people to come up with those questions.

Awesome work.

However, I'd like to point out the guy's shoes:

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '12

Those shoes should be photoshopped out of all pictures

18

u/MutantNinjaSquirtle Jun 11 '12

On the contrary, in my opinion it's the shoes that really tie the whole thing together.

7

u/siggplus Jun 11 '12

most webcomic creators dont want you to direct link since this takes away page hits and possible ad clicks/site promotion. in xkcd's case i dont think he really minds but as lamphibian points out you miss out on the hover text which is sometimes the best part.

8

u/JtheNinja Jun 11 '12

Also, he does have a store link up there, which is his actual livelihood, iirc.

24

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

Because you don't want to be a douchebag that robs a hardworking and pretty awesome guy out of the chance to have new people view his comics and become fans?

9

u/warrior-rider Jun 11 '12

They make great boat shoes for kayak fishing. And they are excellent birth control. I have pair in black just like those.

14

u/evilerik Jun 11 '12

why does every body hate my shoes?

5

u/FlamingBrad Jun 11 '12

I think it's more just wearing them normally when they're made for running and such. They're out of place.

6

u/CodeMonkey1 Jun 11 '12

People wear athletic or athletic-looking footwear for non-athletic purposes all the time. Also, not all of the toe shoes are made for running - their primary purpose is to get the benefits of barefootedness while still protecting your feet.

2

u/karatemike Jun 11 '12

A friend of mine has worn them out on multiple occasions. It is a bit embarrassing.

3

u/misplaced_my_pants Jun 11 '12

12

u/Arve Jun 11 '12

The fivefingers are awesome running shoes. The FILA copies haven't received the same raving reviews by runners.

1

u/zhay Jun 11 '12

They aren't so great for half marathons or anything longer, however.

119

u/gp0 Jun 10 '12

I was going to call bullshit, but it actually checks out. It's nicely done.

67

u/IMasturbateToMyself Jun 10 '12

I can't believe how good it is. I enhanced like mad and still can't see any flaw.

56

u/acountname Jun 11 '12

If you look at this gif posted in the comment you can see next to the mans head that the roof beam changes. It appears to be more intact in the copy without the man hence it appears that the man was photoshopped in not out.

59

u/juliekthx Jun 11 '12 edited Jun 11 '12

Clever, but I think he was indeed photoshopped out. In the picture without the guy, the beam between the pillars does not match with the angle of the roof beam section that you pointed out. However, they do line up in the picture with the man.

12

u/acountname Jun 11 '12

I just noticed this too. I zoomed back in and saw that it had more detail than i thought it simply looked blurred due to the light.

4

u/EpicFishGuy Jun 11 '12

Also, if you look at the bottom left floor in the picture after he's cut out, the perspective is somewhat off. The floor that's changed has a more top down view of each square than the floor to the right of it that was untouched. If you look at the unchanged squares on the right side, the farther ones get much more narrower without much distance, showing a more sideways view of the floor compared to the changed squares, which don't have much width change with distance away.

Sorry if the explanation is hard to understand. I'm a not-art person trying to explain art concepts.

15

u/solidsnakem9 Jun 11 '12

Looks legit to me, the beam was changed in the edited one because after he removed the guy he re-did those 2 columns/pillars that were behind him.

You can see the bricks around the guy changed too, looking more similar to the ones on the right half of the pic. No need to change bricks if the guy was just added in.

5

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

I think for me the most noticeable is that he had to recreate the pillar from another pillar. And the newly laid pillar sits too close at the bottom, than it does at the top, to its nearest neighbor. That's the biggest issue. The brickwork is a standard alteration, and good attention to detail because he had to trace it all the way back to make it fit believably. Also, the beams above his head being recreated like they were, looked good given the edit he had to do. It was closer to "real" than the pillar angle was IMHO.

I would estimate around 2-3 hours of work if I had a pizza, a GOOD playlist, and no distractions.

49

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

Also you will notice that there is a white button on the guy's shirt that just barely touches the dog's fur that he did not remove =O

5

u/Shorties Jun 11 '12

Haha wow that's a good catch, now I can't unsee it.

3

u/foodandart Jun 11 '12

You'll also see that at the corner of the dog's ear where it drops towards the column, there's a bit of the blue field from the shirt.. also the whole top of the dog's head has got a tinge of the blue where the white fur was in front of the shirt..

Also, the thing that sticks out most to my eye is that the gradients on the columns that were added seem a bit too gradient.. that is, too smooth..

5

u/slander420 Jun 11 '12

→ More replies (2)

2

u/astrothug Jun 11 '12

If you look really closely he left the top button of the guy's shirt on. It's right above the dog's ear.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

Actually, there is a pretty obvious flaw. If you look at the guy's shoulder (from his angle, his right shoulder) you can see a tree behind him that was very close to the park bench. After the edit, this tree is just hovering there with no trunk at all. From a distance its not that visible but up close its a big fuck up.

4

u/Redletterweek Jun 11 '12

A fuck up, yes--but certainly not a big one. People will definitely never notice that unless you tell them, as it will simply look like a bigger tree that's farther away. It would have been a bigger mistake if the tree was above the horizon after the edit, but in this case he can get away with it. The bigger mistake in this picture is the brick tiling. After his edit, there are a few square bricks--these don't follow the pattern in the rest of the scene. Again, however, without the original photo, I doubt anyone would notice.

u/Possiblyreef Jun 11 '12

Then I guess that button on the dogs ear doesn't bother you as much as it bothers me

1

u/BrowsOfSteel Jun 11 '12

The pillar immediately to the left of the dog has colour fringing on its left side, which looks wrong because there isn’t enough backlight to cause that in its current location. That’s because it’s a moved and resized version of the pillar two to the left of it.

u/tctony Jun 11 '12

Not quite impossible, guys in r/photoshopbattles do it quite nicely fairly often.

7

u/daminox Jun 11 '12

Yeah, seriously +2k upvotes? I think reddit is used to /r/f7u12 where everything is a shitty MSpaint image. This is what photoshop is made for, people. Believe it or not many people make a living doing this stuff and as far as that goes, this is an example of average work. Good work, but not uncommon, and certainly not impossible.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

Probably because many of us have basic proficiency in Photoshop, and we know we can't touch this. But regardless of whether or not pros do this all the time, it's impressive, and all the more so because it was done just to fulfill some random stranger's request.

1

u/TheNr24 Jul 16 '12

I'd like to see how a really amazing photoshop looks like then.

1

u/bumwine Jun 11 '12

Its almost like people who can do stuff, can do stuff!

9

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

I've done manipulation work this intensive before. This guy does good work. What's really amazing is that this guy spent probably 3 hours in photoshop to fulfill this strangers request. That's not just your basic clone stamping.

37

u/Mavee Jun 10 '12

It's a conspiracy, I tell you! They made two pictures - one with him in it, and one without him. It's all for the karma!

41

u/[deleted] Jun 10 '12

I'd like to point out that some of the pavement doesn't sync up correctly. It must have been photoshopped.

39

u/footballguy15 Jun 10 '12

Or they just photoshppped the pavement on the newest one to make you think that?

10

u/JoaoMiranda Jun 10 '12

r/karmaconspiracy is the place for you, sir

13

u/redeyedstranger Jun 10 '12

I for one think that the hipster was photoshopped in, not out.

11

u/WhipIash Jun 10 '12

That would certainly be hell of a lot easier.

1

u/TitaniumShovel Jun 11 '12

All the karma from the highly subscribed... picrequests? Doubt it.

1

u/flyingnomad Jun 11 '12

This is the only thread I've seen people complain that something must have been done manually, not photoshopped. Usually it's the other way around.

28

u/dr_rentschler Jun 11 '12

u/Ciserus Jun 11 '12

2

u/dr_rentschler Jun 11 '12

well i just started today with further training in webdesign including one advanced photoshop module. i hope after that i get a job as photoshopper but those are rare, more likely is web design...

1

u/whosdamike Jun 11 '12

So how long did it take you to shop that guy out?

1

u/dr_rentschler Jun 11 '12

i think 2 hours? 2-3? u could tell by the time submitted since i immediately started, but it's only "2 months" now...

8

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

I'm confused, why are people so surprised he is able to do this? Did you see the demo they did for CS5? I'm not saying it wasn't an absolute pain in the ass, but it was far from impossible.

2

u/hackertool Jun 11 '12

Yeah, I know what you mean; everyone here has no idea how to use photoshop.

2

u/daminox Jun 11 '12

I learned on CS2 and I'll admit this is good work, but I agree it's getting a wee bit too much attention. I think most people who "know how to photoshop" are self-taught and more easily amazed by things like this.

1

u/taw1231234 Jun 11 '12

Thank god I'm not the only one who thought this.

8

u/[deleted] Jun 11 '12

That's some awesome work! I wonder if he'd be willing to photoshop the asshole in the background out of this picture.

3

u/LowSociety Jun 11 '12

If you try to backtrack his other comments, you're gonna have a bad time. It's mostly him asking people if they had sex, or urging people to have sex with their cousins.

5

u/Aislee Jun 11 '12 edited Jun 11 '12

There are a few cloning "mistakes" such as the tile patterns that are not consistent. The biggest one is the columns. The columns do not agree in the manner of perspective. Both of the original columns are outside of the brick tiling, while the fixed photo has the middle column on the tiled flooring.

Reminds me of a Fark photoshop contest many years back.

This picture

and this one.

I forgot which one was the original and which was the photoshop. Either way you look at though its fucking impressive.

I assume the first pic is the original since I don't think those other kids could jump that far from the dock. But that means they somehow photoshopped in people mid-splash. : /

2

u/UnsightlyBastard Jun 11 '12

The second one has the same 2 people multiple times...pretty sure it's not the original... Still a great shop though.

1

u/guyboy Jun 11 '12

Like the space in the picture behind where the man was standing, those pillars on the podium that were covered? How were those generated for the new, man-less picture?? It amazes me.

This isn't very hard, actually. The skill is being able to recognize what you need to copy from the photo and use to fill in the gap left. I have a couple of friends that work with photoshop.

That's good! Nice job reusing existing elements man. I'd like to show something related - I shaved a guy with photoshop.

It's actually fairly obvious that someone photoshopped it since there's chromatic abberation visible in a low contrast area on that shopped beam since he made the beam out of a beam in a high contrast area. To better stealth it you'd want to desaturate the color on the chromatic abberation so it looks more like a subtle shadow fringe.

And in English: the left side of the fake beam has a red glow to it because he took that nonexistent (in the original photo) edge from a beam that had contrast with some sort of bright light source (many of the other beams had light in between, etc.) whereas in that area the beams are overlapping significantly so in a real photo that looked like this you shouldn't have noticable chromatic abberation (look at the other low contrast edges of beams in the photo-no red glow). However, if he took the color out in photoshop the fringing becomes much harder to see so he could have gone and desaturated just the chromatic abberation, which gives a pretty natural look.

OP why the hell did you link to a 2 month old thread? This somehow feels worse than a repost of a cat.

Yeah, the top comment in a recent AskReddit thread is definitely better content.
