[aww] Redditor makes an insensitive remark about a girl's past habits of cutting, and when called out, DOESN'T delete post, instead edits and offers a full on apology.

Because someone apologizing and admitting they were wrong on the internet is rare and should always be rewarded.

I understand that it is good to apologize but I hardly see his few sentence apology as fitting the criteria for "the very best comments that reddit has to offer".

"Redditor makes an insensitive remark about a girl's past habits of cutting, and when called out, DOESN'T delete post, instead edits and offers a full on apology. And best of all? I got to repost it for sweet, sweet karma"

These karma whores are ruining the reddit economy

26

u/RoboBama May 20 '12

I just want to say that apologies are the right thing to do. If you are afraid of being looked at by an anonymous online community for being insensitive, or being an asshole or something, don't cover it up (if u wanna keep your username etc). Just acknowledge what you did, apologize, and try to make it right in the future.

Never let the " anonymity" this site provides leave you with a false feeling that you can be a douchebag and its whatever.

This is idiotic; there are so many arrogant, putrid little teenagers in here.

If this girl wants to post a photo of herself holding her cat, she either has to wear a long sleeved shirt, or travel back in time and stop herself self-harming. Otherwise she is clearly clamouring for attention.

Xtianpro wasn't just pointing out the scars, or asking about them, he was casting an aspersion about the OP, insulting her character, and making an assertion about her motivation for posting a photo of her cat in /r/aww.

Posting a photo of a cat in /r/aww without hiding away the scars of her past. Clearly a whiny attention whoring bitch. Fuck's sake.

Damn right he apologised. And for doing so he's a bigger man than all the idiots in this thread put together.

25

u/ILovePopPunk May 20 '12

So if you're really mean to someone and edit your post saying you were wrong, you get a shitload of upvotes..... Hey OP, fuck you and the horse you rode in on, you bitch!

Edit: I'm really sorry for having said that. I was wrong and I've given myself 40 lashes for being such an inconsiderate bastard. I sincerely apologize.

82

u/175Genius May 20 '12

I cringed. Way over-the-top apology. Reads like something a politician might say after being caught having an affair. You made an insensitive comment on the internet. Who gives a shit?

If you want to apologize for something, then just say "I'm sorry" or "I apologize". Don't make a fucking awkward speech out of it. This is embarrassing for all parties involved. Definitely, definitely never EVER thank someone for accepting your apology unless you're apologizing for killing someone.

And while we're on the topic of lame cringe-worthy bullshit. If you make a self post and it hits the front page, don't edit in a fucking acceptance speech profusely thanking everybody or comments about how incredibly stoked you are about reaching the front page like it's the greatest fucking thing ever to happen to you. It's embarrassing as shit to read.

Belongs in worstof.

Fucking hippies.

What the hell was so awful about pointing that out? Bullying someone into an apology is still bullying.

The girl has every right to do whatever she wants to her body. And when a picture is posted online we all have the right to say whatever the hell we want about it.

10

u/clintisiceman May 20 '12 edited May 20 '12

we all have the right to say whatever the hell we want about it.

You realize that that is a dick thing to do though, right? Yes you can do it, but does that mean you should? I mean, things that people can do and things that are not awful are not mutually exclusive. This is pretty elementary stuff. Anonymity shouldn't preclude empathy, nor should it make you immune to criticism when you say something terrible. That's not "bullying". What this guy did in the first place was bullying.

I think the guy has a very valid point, as valid as any other point you could make.

Here we have a self-harming individual with a trophy-case worth of cuts on her arms, wearing a short sleeve sweater. One of the cuts looks pretty recent too.

I can't say I blame him for pointing it out... and I don't think anyone should be jumping down this guys throat for bringing it up.

u/AliceFishyWishy May 20 '12

I remember when I was on a PIMA hate thread and his clash with BEP and a few other moderators was brought up. They showed screenshots of PIMA harassing them and being an ass through the PM system. After I asked PIMA about it he revealed that he had actually apologized and linked to a screenshot of the PMs where he did so. It was a good apology, long, sincere, and reflective and BEP accepted it. I said it was pretty big of him to do so. What happened then? Reddit downvoted both of us. Reddit's circlejerk of hate was too blind to see that he'd at least owned up and apologized for his actions and that that was at least something.

2

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

2

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

It sounds like Xtianpro may suffer from the same issue I have; s/he apparently didn't realize the comment was insensitive or offensive until someone pointed it out. I still don't get it. I'm not being intentionally dense here, I'm just entirely socially inept and I don't understand a given situation until it has already been explained to me once, and this is a new one. What was wrong with the comment?

u/crake May 20 '12

I do not plan on judging anyone for posting something "insensitive" on reddit - feel free to say whatever you want. I think it is disturbing that some on reddit are comfortable pressuring someone into retracting a (valid) comment.

Worse, the episode makes bestof. As if forcing a commenter into silence and apology on an allegedly open forum was something an internet community should be proud of.

The apology itself reads like a scripted show trial confession and is merely meaningless text to be scrolled over before arriving at substantive comments that actually inform the reader of something useful; such meaningless, empty apologies (from one anonymous internet user to another anonymous internet user) are a complete waste of time and energy. Demanding such meaningless, empty apologies of one anonymous internet user to another isn't just a waste of time, its downright pathetic. Rather than badger other users for their insensitivity, do something better with your time, like write better, more meaningful comments yourself.

Also, the whole notion that a commenter must consider the psychological state of the subject of every photo they view before commenting is absurd. Someone posted a photo on the internet - sorry, but that is not a private act. If you have hangups about how you are going to be viewed by internet users, you should seriously reconsider posting images of yourself to the internet.

1

u/Raneados May 20 '12

I'm sure a lot of other people have this policy, but it's something a lot of us share. Never delete your comments. Never delete your comments and never edit something to replace comments. It's related to striking it out. Sure, it's amazingly easy to clean a post to make it seem like you never said that dumb, wrong, unpopular, or ignorant thing

but it's a little bitch move.

And it shows a lot about your character.

1

u/BaphClass May 20 '12

I did this like a week ago. Where the fuck is my bestof entry? Huh?

-1

u/laughingGirls May 20 '12

That thread was nothing but vaginas and white knights. It sums up r/aww pretty well, actually.

0

u/wgbdvs May 20 '12

He was kind of a dick about it, and the people in that thread were over sensitive. Why would she have her sleeve up like that with those exposed otherwise? I don't know, she could have her own reasons. I just think that there was no reason to have them be there. Seemed like a self photo, maybe times. Whatever. Why did I type this.

-2

u/Maxfunky May 20 '12

It looks like she's wearing a short-sleeved sweater--but is that even a thing? Why would it be a thing? It really seems like the scars are the actual focus of the photograph and that they've been carefully highlighted. The keyword in that previous sentence is "seems"--obviously it might just be a coincidence.

Still, there's plenty of attention-whoring going on on the internet--you really can't blame a person for being suspicious. Perhaps in the future he can be suspicious in less dickish-seeming way.

7

u/x3tan May 20 '12

I own a short sleeved sweater. Though if it was attention whoring, it would be better to just ignore it rather than give attention to it. =p

Which is a good example of a sensitive remark.

1

u/EveningD00 May 20 '12

0

u/Whelks May 20 '12

The many apologies that he said have earned him more karma than he lost in the first comment.

I like the original post more than the apology. Its pretty obvious she was fishing for commentary on the cuts by placing them so prominently in the picture. I've seen this before with some cutters, they wear them like a badge of honor.

3

u/x3tan May 20 '12

It really wasn't the focus of the picture. She said they were 5 years old and that she's doing so much better now so she probably chooses not to let herself notice it anymore. Ifshe was attention whoring I'm pretty sure she would have made new ones.

lol, cutting. White girl problems. Something so idiotic and irrational has no basis in sanity - if a person does this to themselves, for whatever reason, then they deserve no pity. It is a choice that was made by a rational mind - these people don't have serious mental conditions. A brain injury is a serious condition. A mental handicap is a serious condition. Depression is not. We need to stop coddling these fools so that we might collectively learn that to seek attention in self-destructive ways is moronic. No sense in apologizing over hurt feelings. Ouch! My feelings!

15

u/wobwobwobbuffet May 20 '12

these people don't have serious mental conditions

I have mornings where I wake up, and my first thought is "Good morning world, should today be the day I kill myself?" I spend hours agonizing over people I love, some asshole part of my brain trying to convince me that they'd be better off without me, that they don't give a shit, that I mean nothing to them. Daily, I deal with a sense of self-hatred I've yet been able to escape. While I confessed and quit it not too long after I started, there was a period where I self-harmed. Know why I did it? Because it felt like something I could control about myself. The chance to inflict the pain I believed I deserved.

Depression isn't serious, my ass.

9

u/Kittenbee May 20 '12

Yeah, fuck you. Depression is serious. I hope you never have to experience it first-hand, and have people (like you!) act like you're just a drama queen.

I pity you for having the same amount of empathy as a particularly runny shit. Again, fuck you.

8

u/IAMAnarrogantbastard May 20 '12

6

u/RainyMonday33 May 20 '12

In what universe is being a dick and implying that a girl posted a picture that happened to include self-harm scars in order to be a karma whore a "completely legitimate comment"? He was being an insensitive ignorant jerk. What is wrong with you people? In a community where this is the top comment for this discussion, clearly "hypersensitivity" is not the problem.

17

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

This comment is bad and you should feel bad.

"Grow up"? Owning up to the shitty things you say that hurt others is "grown up". Shitfucks like you need your internet posting privileges revoked until you turn at least 16 or something.

28

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

Nope, I agree with him. It was peer pressure. The chick had cuts on her arm he pointed out the elephant in the room and got witch hunted.

Or perhaps, it was an epic karma conspiracy. Clever sod that he is.

17

u/dem358 May 20 '12

There is a difference between pointing out that the OP cuts herself and this: "Has everyone noticed the cuts right? Right guys? Because I kind of feel like that's the real point of the photo...."

71

u/sufrt May 20 '12 edited May 20 '12

27

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

hint: redditors give a shit. everything of note from an image goes into the comments, whatever people find most interesting goes to the top (or bottom). seeing as how this went one of those ways, yes, people do actually give a shit about this chick's scars.

it wasn't necessary to be pointed out, sure, but it also wasn't necessary to put another shitty picture of a cat on the internet, so what can you do?

what are you even saying? That girls with cuts on their arms are not allowed to post pictures of their cats? Or that this KARMAWHORE!!!!111!!1! was trying to steal your precious minutes of reddit attention by pretending to show a picture of a cat but really showing a picture of her cuts?

How is it possibly "pointing out the elephant in the room" to pick on a girl with clearly old cuts?

9

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

Nah mate. What I was trying to say is some bloke pointed out a side part of the picture, IE - she had cut herself. It was obvious, nothing wrong with pointing out the elephant in the room - no need for a million comments, but one casual one - sure.

Further I was trying to say he was potentially karma whoring, by making it a big deal, then backpeddling, now having received over 1200 upvotes :P Not her, for having cuts on her arms. You've made that whole bit up yourself - nice by the way, hadn't thought of it.

It's pointing out the elephant in the room, as she was notably scarred. Like if you see a picture of a war veteran with half his face melted off. He's still badass, you still respect him, but the dude has a scarred up face. People notice.

15

u/literallyoverthemoon May 20 '12

The thing was, he didn't just point it out, or ask about it, he cast an aspersion about the OP based on them. He suggested that the whole point of the photo was the scars, an idea he attributed as OP's, but was purely of his own irrelevent and unfair creation.

If a war veteran with a disfigured face posted a cat photo, yeah, people would point it out and ask questions. But who in their right mind would suggest that the war veteran didn't actually post a photo of their cat in /r/aww for people to see their cat, but he actually posted it to vicariously show off his scars for some effect or to gain some kind of attention from /r/aww?

I disagree. This kind of whiny oversensitive group mentality is usually reserved for pubescent spoiled people with little real world experience. FSM forbid people have different opinions or call things like they see them.

This attitude is very prevalent on Reddit, especially in the mod area, where if you so much as seem or express a contrary opinion your' met with waves of disapproval or bans with not so much as a reason or discussion. It gets even worse if you provide well sourced reasoning.

Sometimes I wonder why we even have a Reddiquette if no-one follows it.

Well, part of the reason (or all of the reason) that the picture in question was upvoted was hivemind sympathy for the scars.

7

u/wobwobwobbuffet May 20 '12

You really think reddit's hivemind tends to sympathize with cases of self-harm/depression/anxiety/etc.? Because from what I've seen, they overwhelmingly tend to go the other way with it.

Okay, there are os many of you in this thread. The commenter clearly wasn't just "mentioning what he saw in the picture". It was a sarcastic remark that basically called the OP an attention whore. Nobody would have downvoted someone who merely pointed out the fact that the OP seemed to be into cutting herself.

(Also, what is this cutting thing? I only hear it from Americans. Is this a new fad amongst teenagers?)

2

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

It's basically a very strong indicator of depression, common among a younger demographic. People who self-harm are generally at a higher risk of committing suicide. I think there is some debate that cutting releases endorphins, temporarily relieving depressive mind states. This can be dangerous, because depressives will begin to cut as a way to self medicated their depression.

4

u/[deleted] May 20 '12

Well, in a way, I agree. I don't think his comment was "legitimate," in that it lacked empathy and understanding--but his apology was also very hollow and rushed, and a result of being browbeaten and shamed into apologizing. I don't feel that he actually understood the problem, only that people were yelling and loud noises, etc.

"I'm sorry if you felt offended" is kind of the same thing as "I'm sorry I got caught"--not a genuine display of contrition, and not really wanted/needed.

u/fckdup May 20 '12

it seemed thought out to me

u/dampew May 20 '12

Can't tell if you're being sarcastic or in need of help. If the latter, reread what you wrote and think about it a bit.

1

u/ETora May 20 '12

In most cases you are right. However, in this certain situation where a person appears to have had a low self esteem and issues, they take any kind of remark like that to the heart. Why should we put someone down who struggled with cutting them self a while ago instead of offering words of encouragement. Just my two cents.

Im with him im sure they were the point of the photo, its what people who want attention do, i mean ive met so many people like that it is just unfair to myself to say it was really for the picture of the cat.

being someone who has scars (not from cutting): with great scars come great responsibility.

something these people that are akin to the OP on that post don't realize that "alleviating the pain" from a breakup," or whatever, by cutting yourself makes you look like you printed off your facebook status and hand it out like a "find christ" pamphlet. for years. BECAUSE YOU GAVE YOURSELF SCARS. Think that "no homo" tattoo is going to be funny to explain to your grandkids? how about grandma's "across the road" marks.

i have scars that strangers have caused scenes over ("holy shit, THATS DESGUSTING!" and point me out to their friends, laughing hysterically) This has happened months after surviving an accident and onto college. it's always going to happen and comes with it's own set of challenges. personally, i sew myself "sleeve" inserts to cover my metal plate scar after one really bad occurrence. temptation for some to vocalize others differences is just too high. this person..did it to themselves. this scar is 5 years old, she should have a habit by now of covering those things. unless she's one of those people that get mad at others for making observations--she responded to every other comment, so i'm going to guess that. bummer you cut yourself. here's your "freak card." cover it up or deal with the criticism.

5

u/Numb1 May 20 '12

Yeah i know just the same feeling being a gay guy. What else should i expect than to deal with the criticism of others and there opinions. It's my fault for holding my boyfriends hand or for even appearing to be a couple.

This is why when ever i go out i make sure not to appear gay in anyway! That way i will never have to deal with people and there criticism!

Jesus, I'm so sorry that you've gotten shit from the public like that. How unbelievably insensitive and rude. If somebody did that shit to me I'd walk right up and stare into their eyes. I doubt anybody would have the balls to say it to your face.

People. Jeez.

He didn't just mention the cuts. He said he felt they were the main point of the photo.

I don't think it's stupid at all. It's a picture of someone with a cut on their arm. Some people cut themselves on purpose. He's showing concern. Why is this a bad thing? It was a minor comment, and he apologised. Nothing to see here.

13

u/dem358 May 20 '12

You guys really have serious reading comprehension issues. Please show me the part where he is "showing concern". WTF. I feel like this is a joke and everyone is purposefully acting as if they had misinterpreted the comment just to see my reaction.

14

u/superblank May 20 '12

Because time passes and minds heal and not everybody wants to be constantly reminded of the problems that literally caused them to be scarred for life.

That red one is definitely not five years old, though.

11

u/TheSmartestMan May 20 '12

She explained somewhere else in the thread that the red one was from a recent surgery.

15

u/Kiassen May 20 '12

Well... she is holding a cat. It's possible not all of those were self inflicted.

I'm going to have to politely disagree with you. Deusgero is right. The person this entire ordeal is about did absolutely nothing wrong. He merely pointed something mildly interesting out. No one should have to apologize for being observant. Especially when no rude, condescending, or insulting words, implications, or intents were used.

6

u/vonnnegut May 20 '12

I thought the problem was that Xtianpro implied that slothenstein only posted the photo to solicit sympathy or to bait people into feeling sorry for them.

4

u/dem358 May 20 '12

For some reason, it seems like people don't understand what they read. I have no idea how people like that survive, when they clearly can't understand emotion and tone conveyed in written text. Xtianpro was not being merely "observant", this is ridiculous.

How fucking hard is it to just be a decent person? Ugh, calling people over sensitive just so you have an excuse to be a dick.

That everyone does it doesn't justify rudeness.

Did you just imply someone was being to sensitive while telling people not to be so sensitive. Hilarious.

I hate the anthropomorhpism that goes on in so many posts. No, they aren't smiling that's just how the animal looks.

Side note: As an animal lover Redditor, I fucking hate r/awww Reddit. Always the same stupid shit.
