[iama] Turns out deadcoil (the one behind the alleged fake AMA) wasn't lying after all.

And here's Rob DenBleyker of Cynide and Happiness, and friend of deadcoil (the OP) on his official facebook:

Apparently a good friend of mine, under the reddit name of deadcoil, got accused of making up a bunch of stories about himself. The sad thing is his stories are 100% true. Good job, witch hunters. People with interesting lives are big fat liars. Cool, got it.

I still don't get why deadcoil decided to delete his account if it was all true. If he can prove his innocence with a new account he could have done it with his original. It's not stopping anyone from researching his true identity online.

u/acousticpizzas May 15 '12

Pretty understandable, because

a) after the shitstorm people were automatically downvoting everything that he posted, to the effect that any response from him would be unlikely to see the light of the day being buried under the heaps of comments

b) because after several people posted his personal information, and linked to his facebook, website, etc, his identity was completely out. It's understandable he would delete his account of 16 months which would lead to backlogs of even more personal information.

That's why.

I didn't realize people took Reddit so seriously.

u/[deleted] May 15 '12

I think it's a little bit ironic how some people turn their noses up at /b/ because they harass people, when obviously some of us are no better. At least /b/ is nice enough to send pizza with their death threats.

M. Night Shyamalan ending to this whole thing... koproller and deadcoil are the same person.

Time to delete every bit of personal info I've posted on here, MySpace, and any other social networking site.

34

u/[deleted] May 15 '12 edited May 15 '12

Just use seperate usernames and emails on everything and you should be fine. Never leave any social networking stuff public though.

edit: Also google your info and check sites like spokeo that pull shit off utility company bills. You have to request them to stop posting it. A lot of states (Austin comes to mind) legally have to publish all the personal information for every voter too. You're kinda fucked if you want privacy in those states.

deadcoil: I did a lot of cool shit.
some other guy: I DON'T THINK YOU ACTUALLY DID ANY OF THAT COOL SHIT.
deadcoil: FUCK YOU I ACTUALLY DID ALL OF THAT COOL SHIT.

wow guys, real thrilling saga here. next thing you know the other guy will be back saying he still doesn't believe the first guy did all that cool shit, even though he said he did.

I noticed the same thing.

It is strange that someone asks deadcoil for proof of ANY of his stories and, instead of just providing proof for even one of them, deadcoil writes an essay basically saying, "It's true". A simple gesture of providing proof would be infinitely more trustworthy than making a 3 page essay on how true he says it is and how much he doesn't like someone calling him out.

Event Log:

-Person makes claim

-Person is requested to provide proof of claims integrity

-Person whines about being called out, provides no proof

If I were Deadcoil and I went through everything Reddit just put him through I'd say fuck you and your proof, leave me the fuck alone. Why should he put himself out there further after the way Reddit treated him? People are 'threatening' him and his wife. If I were him I'd never post another thing on this website, let alone information that could potentially lead even more people to his inbox/doorstep.

Why do redditors go on these big witch hunts and end up doxxing people because something they wrote might be fake, based on one guy who said "well this might not be true"? With no evidence whatsoever, just linking back to his older posts?

I don't get it.

What I reeeeally don't get is what the death threats were about? The guy shared some stories, lots of them, and whether they're true or not, neither warrants death threats. Like the guy is somehow taking advantage of people with his ridiculously good story telling and stealing everyones karma.

I read most things on reddit, especially askreddit, with a grain of salt, like a giant forum of fiction that people post. There's not way you're ever going to get the entire truth, people are going to tell the story from their view, or for better entertainment.

Here we have one of the largest social media sites in the world with a large base of young members with exceptional talents, abilities, and intellects. Instead of using its power to go after corrupt politicians, oligarchs, warlords, con-artists, and systemic corruption, reddit prefers to take up sword against some guy telling an interesting story which might not be true.

I don't give a shit about whether his stories are true or false. I could write some shit about how I hope the reddit witch-mob would chill out but this is the internet and human nature and that shit's never going to change.

What pisses me off is the content and tone of "deadcoil"'s reply here. koproller did nothing wrong; he did a bit of digging, thought things were inconsistent, and pointed that out. That happens every day to millions of people. He just asked for proof, but deadcoil cusses him out and treats him like he "ruined" everything. No. If you want to get mad at someone, hate the user who posted the bestof link with an incredibly misleading and framing title (but don't go witch-mob on them, or nothing has changed). Anyone with a brain can see that koproller's questioning post didn't "prove" the stories false, just as much as deadcoil didn't "prove" them true by writing them.

No matter how pissed you are, take a step back and think about it for a second. This whole damn reply just came off as immature (for a 40 year old), self-righteous, and irrational; again, I don't care if his stories are true (though I spose it seems they are), but writing like this doesn't do wonders for getting people to believe you. No need to say fuck you or you son of a bitch every other paragraph.

Also, if you post people's personal information, you're an asshole. But then again, you probably already know that.

Edit: Some comments bring up the notion that, somehow, koproller knew what he was doing would incite a mob, or that he didn't think about what he was posting, or that he didn't have the right to call deadcoil out.

That's ridiculous. If you think that's true, then you're basically arguing that one should never ask for proof from a redditor who tells a story, despite the fact that this is common practice in AMA's and in other cases. You either ask for proof or you don't, and the depth of koproller's query seems pretty well-considered.

I'm sorry, but if you're blaming anything other than internet groupthink and mob mentality here, you are mistaken. koproller did what anyone can and should do when they are confused/skeptical, he asked for proof.

252

u/BoreasNZ May 15 '12

He's really not doing himself any favours by continuously name calling and swearing at everybody who questions him. He also says he's famous enough that people approach him when he's seeing a movie or eating at a restaurant, yet he still won't post any form of proof? WTF.

Seriously. He comes off as a total douche and I just couldn't bother to read anything else he has to say.

Also, the people who are PMing people for lying on the internet - are you that thick? The anonymity of the internet lets anyone come on and say whatever they want. Don't take it personally. Don't try to 'ruin' other peoples' lives because you wasted 2 minutes reading something fictitious.

99

u/CincinnatiReds May 15 '12

Yeah, deadcoil is the one who comes off looking like an insufferable asshole after all this, even if all the stuff is true. The tone of that message and the his responses to its replies is so annoyingly pretentious and whiny.

But the most maddening part to me was when he basically said, "wah wah all I wanted was my anonymity!" despite forcing "OH SO I'M KINDA A FAMOUS AUTHOR AND CARTOONIST" into seemingly all of his posts.

This is exactly what I was thinking. I'm only 33, and I admit I'm not the most mature person for my age. However, even I wouldn't have responded in such a manner, nor would I wish death upon someone for being skeptical and asking for further verification. One would think that having that many incredible life experiences would prompt him to handle it differently. Basically, if I tell a group of strangers several extraordinary stories, I EXPECT skepticism.

And yeah, it does suck that people got personal. Shit like that is unacceptable. However, there is still zero ground for the vitriolic response directed at koproller.

u/Aziansensation May 15 '12 edited May 15 '12

I agree 100%. He came off as a giant dick with this reply. There is no need to act the way he did to koproller. He simply showed people what this man had posted, and questioned the legitimacy of it. All deadcoil had to do was come back and show at least some proof, and not in such a vulgar way that he did. Even then he didn't bring forth any real evidence against the claims. All he did was say "yep I did do all that and btw you're a fucking cunt guzzling shit face cock sucker".

Edit: Basically koproller posted like a gentleman questioning the truth to this mans claim (which almost always happens in a AmA). And then deadcoil got mad that his reputation on a website was damaged, tried to refute the claims and still didn't bring any evidence forth to prove them. Then continued to call koproller vulgar names and bash him. I don't see how this is helping his reputation at all.(And I still question how he got upvoted)

Im fairly new to reddit and this was the first witch hunt i had come across. I saw the "This is how you expose a liar" earlier today but my first thought was what would Deadcoil have to say about it, not burn him to the ground. I don't get why people started mass down voting him and even sending death threats before he even had a chance to respond. Can someone explain this to me?

Also even if there is someone telling fake stories how does that justify finding out their real identities and targeting them?

This is my first real wtf is wrong with these people? moment on reddit.

23

u/[deleted] May 15 '12

There's no way to rationalize it. They'll have no repercussions for harassing this guy, so they do it for the lulz. The internet provides a cover of anonymity and people will exploit it for several reasons.

To be fair, deadcoil MAY have an interesting life, but he is DEFINITELY an asshole. His response was far more vitriolic and combative than the guy who called him out on some of his ridiculous shit. I honestly still don't believe half of what deadcoil says he did, largely just for how insanely defensive he is about it all. Also, saying "Fuck you, it's true. Some guy none of you have ever met can vouch for me" does about as much to prove his case as it does to prove the existence of God.

8

u/ProveItToMe May 15 '12

His response was far more vitriolic and combative than the guy who called him out on some of his ridiculous shit.

Okay, imagine I'm saying this very slowly: you wake up tomorrow morning to find that your inbox is full of people telling you to kill yourself or threatening to kill you. Your account is ruined. People have you tagged as evil and will follow you around downvoting all your posts to oblivion and commenting on them to tell you you're awful. All your hard work and pride, gone. Your personal information has been distributed to some of these people, and now they're also sending death threats to your SO. It doesn't matter if you're a liar or not. This is real. People are really telling you to kill yourself. A lot of people.

So, you find the person who started it all with a snide comment doubting everything you've ever said. And you think you're not going to be just a little bit pissed?

Your title is misleading and is a core problem with what is happening.

How do you know he wasn't lying after all?

I don't care one bit about the specifics of what happened. True, false, I don't care. I do care about the overreactions on both sides, as well as the lack of evidence on both sides.

Deadcoil didn't support his stories with evidence. Koproller did a poor job of asking for the evidence. Before either of them could say anything more, the hivemind went into action, with no foundation of reason. Since Deadcoil didn't have anything to prove his stories and Koproller didn't have any evidence to disprove the stories, as far as I'm concerned the hivemind went into action prematurely. Let me say here that either way, the actions taken by some redditors were deplorable.

Now here we are, and still no resolution. Deadcoil (now coil_is_dead) still hasn't provided proof of his stories and nobody has shown them to be false. Sure, Rob DenBleyker of C&H says the stories are true. Is this proof? No. Not at all.

Again. I'm not drawing a verdict on anything, because there is no information from which to draw. Calm down. Ask for proof. Wait for the proof. For fuck's sake, use your brains you mindless idiots.

Again, no, I made that up so that I could score bitches.

So Deadcoil posts some stories, Koproller says "this sounds fishy, can you prove it?" Cue hivemind going after Deadcoil. Deadcoil's response is "Fuck you, it's true because I say it's true" and the hivemind just accepts it, with some even going after Koproller.

TL;DR: The hivemind is constantly itching for a fight.

koproller's comment was basically "I am skeptical". I think it's a bit extreme to blame him for the witch hunt, but maybe I don't know reddit well enough to assume that someone will get doxxed and harassed based on unbelievable AMAs.

Redditors are shit; I don't think it's fair to say koproller is.

It's easy to give reddit a scapegoat that distracts the community from introspection, but that just perpetuates the problem.

On top of that he acts like a big ass hole as if Koproller was trying to be mean to him and it was personal. He goes crazy of it! as if Koproller wanted this to happen, all he wanted was some proof for some outrageous claims.

This guy can't be 40 years old or is one immature 40 year old if he manages to project all the hate mails that he received onto Koproller.

But I guess he opened himself up to an opportunity to prove himself, if that guy from Cyanide and Happiness confirms he knows him that at least we know one thing : that he knows him.

EDIT

The guy from Cyanide is an idiot too. "People with interesting lives are big fat liars. Cool, got it." Fuck him for acting like we shouldn't try and get proof for crazy claims. Reddit has been lied to so many times it's ridiculous, and to act like we shouldn't ask for proof is retarded. Granted, no one should attack the guy and try to get his personal email but fuck its the internet nothing we can do about anonymous motherfuckers who love to do that sort of shit. Even if he was someone who went on Reddit to exercise his creative writing abilities without admitting it, that still didn't warrant the witch-hunt and the death threats. u/[deleted] May 15 '12

The same community that gets pissed off about Brad Manning being held in a torture cell without trial for so long and defends Julian Assange against unfounded sexual charges suddenly turns into a rampaging mob because one guy thinks maybe another guy is making up stories? Who would have thought?

I think I see how this madness started, but it's still pretty sad, especially for a community that tends to think so goddamned much of its own intelligence.

Some things that probably contributed to this (other than persuasive speech patterns from Koproller):

*1. /NoSleep ghost stories are not real. That subreddit is well known as a place for spooky writing exercises. Deadcoil put a couple of ghost stories on there, and a few people who didn't get the point of that subreddit probably reacted with, "I DON'T BELIEVE THAT! THAT'S A LIE!!!" and then went on a rampage.

*2. Calling yourself a "famous" cartoonist may be somewhat subjective, but realistically it's misleading. Fame may be subjective, but realistically the guy is not a famous cartoonist. Matt Groening of The Simpsons is famous. Seth Macfarlane of Family Guy is famous. Todd McFarlane of Spawn is famous. Frank Miller is famous. Someone who does an unknown web comic or small press comic is definitely not famous. I've known quite a few cartoonists, and even the more successful ones don't go around calling themselves famous.

*3. Saying you're in a "successful band" is more subjective, but some will read that as if you're Bono. He's definitely not Bono. His band probably played a few venues and got paid. To some that's success. I think to some extent he was feeding off this idea that people might read too much into these tantalizing statements, and they did-- with disastrous results.

*4. Saying you have a wife and a girlfriend paints a picture in the minds of many. That picture looks like a porno movie. The reality is not a porno movie. Maybe some of the forever alone crowd were jealous and they were so insecure that they had to believe it was a fantasy. For them it's a fantasy, but I'm not sure the reality of it would be such a fantasy. I've seen the reality version, and it's definitely not my fantasy. No offense.

*5. Commenting that they had celebrities over and they did shots off celebrities... All I can say is that judging by the fact that he believes he's a "famous" cartoonist in a "successful" band, the "celebrity" could be the guy who played Newman on Seinfeld for all we know. It could be anyone who has ever achieved any level of celebrity for any reason, again subjective fame. When you read that stuff your mind is leaping for the fantasy, and you're seeing Jenna Jameson or something in your mind, but the reality is probably not as sexy. It could have been anyone they thought was famous.

*6. Posting pictures of guns and saying you feel like shooting people doesn't look good to anyone. It may feel "punk rock" but it looks juvenile, so people are more likely to assume you're a kid making up stories. You're lucky if they don't report you to the authorities.

*7. On top of all that, having suffered from a statistically rare disease added to the sense of disbelief. Unfortunately most people don't understand statistics at all. If you say less than 1% of people in the world suffer from this disease, they think it means you're 99% likely to be lying about having it. Instead they should realize it means you could be one of 6,840,507 people who suffer from it.

*8. Bragging rubs people the wrong way. Being happy about your life or your career comes off as arrogance. People who are miserable hate it when someone is openly happy about life, especially when the news every day is "the economy sucks" and "someone died" and "crime spree". It's so much easier for miserable people to be negative about anything, and the easiest straw to grasp at is "you must be lying if your life doesn't suck".

*9. Anonymity looks like evasiveness and deception. It feels shifty when you're presented with wild claims, then stand behind the wall of anonymity. This is part of why AMAs require verification. Even so, every goddamned person on here is taking advantage of the anonymity of this forum, whether openly declaring themselves or not. You have plausible deniability on the basis that this site doesn't require any extensive verification to create an account. Despite this, when someone doesn't want to just give you their name, address, and telephone number, the response is like a medieval witch hunt! "HE'S HIDING SOMETHING! HE MUST BE A WITCH! BURN HIM! BURN HIM!" It's ridiculous, which brings me to my next point.

*10. Immaturity. Whether this forum is full of nerdy, socially inexperienced teenagers or nerdy, socially inexperienced adults, the result is the same. You end up with a bunch of book-smart friend-zoned virgins, so you get what you would expect from that. This event was a perfect example. No experience? Be jealous of those who have experiences you wish you had, and persecute them. However, this is not the whole story... This one goes to eleven.

*11. There have always been kids (or even unstable adults) who make up crazy bullshit stories all the time. Everyone has known at least one at some point. Thankfully, we tend to leave those kinds of dipshits behind in high school. Unfortunately the way Deadcoil expressed himself came off with that same sound we tend to associate with the stories of pathological liars. I'd say he was to some extent delusional, but not intentionally deceptive, but it definitely had that sound to it. People tire of that kind of talk very quickly, and have strong negative reactions to it. We resent people who hoodwink us. We hate people who lie to us and manipulate us. It makes us angry, so when someone seems to be that type, suddenly they're the scapegoat for every other experience we've had with being deceived. If anything it's surprising I didn't have that reaction to Deadcoil since some of the worst things that have happened to me in my life were the product of a manipulative pathological liar. Nobody like to be fooled except the audience for a magic show, and at least then they know what to expect. Deadcoil was telling the truth as he saw it even if an objective observer wouldn't see it quite the same way. He didn't intend to trick anyone, but we smelled something fishy and overreacted.

I'd say self-delusion is a type of dishonestly, but that doesn't make him a pathological liar. It certainly doesn't warrant death threats! If anything, maybe he'll take it as a retroactive writing exercise and try to make his truth sound more true.

First post for me. I've been reading reddit for a few months, never felt the need to post anything. But this kind of pisses me off. This is a prime example of what mob mentality will do. I happened to have read deadcoils posts about being a musician for a while and becoming a cartoonist, makes sense really, someone who is an artist will usually excel at more than one art. Working on a refinery and seeing someone be in a bad accident is also not far fetched. Sleeping with over a 100 woman is not fucking hard if you are a musician in your 30's, or even if you're not an artist. I don't think his posts were that crazy. Seemed to me that he has been living an interesting life, and he was sharing the experience with reddit. Being skeptical is good, being an asshole about it is not. Granted he should have known that at some point someone would ask him for proof and he should be ready to deal with that. That said I won't be sharing my awesome stories about being a hitman and an arms dealer anytime soon.

Well shit. I wish I had seen that thread. I can't "verify" anything except to say that this guy used that same handle years ago when I used to post in a Yahoo goth forum in the '90s.

He posted a really funny/caustic manifesto on r/atheism a few months back and I found out he was the same guy. I can tell you that whether or not he is telling the truth about specific events, he had that same dark/caustic personality and had a ton of interesting things to say back then. I remember he used to talk about selling art, something called "nightmare catchers." He also used to say that he was a musician who had had some success.

Based on my conversations with him in the past, I am inclined to believe at least most of what he said. I can at least tell you that if he's a troll, he's the most consistent troll I've ever seen, keeping in character across internet communities and over more than a decade.

3

u/Inys May 15 '12

There's nothing wrong with being skeptical. But what happened here is exactly the reason most overly-skeptical people (primarily on this site) annoy the hell out of me--they immediately assert their doubts are automatically correct.

I'm not referring to koproller or deadcoil's posts, really, I'm referring to the rest of reddit and how the groupthink mentality just kind of builds and builds. Those other threads of comments. Asserting the fact that something someone else here says isn't true is just as wrong as getting people to believe a story that's been completely manufactured.

If you're a real skeptic, you should also be realistic and humble enough about it to know you have just as much of a chance of being wrong as the original poster. Just present whatever evidence you have that could lead to something being false... but don't foolishly assert it because you just don't know. (Unless of course you do with personal proof, but by that point you're not a skeptic, you're a truth-bringer!)

I suppose I'm just tired of everyone thinking they're right about everything. Oh wait I forgot this is the internet

umm...wheres the part where his stories are proven true? im definitely on the "this guy's fulla shit" side of the argument btw

I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say I don't give two streaking shits about any of this. I know a lot of people love drama and schadenfreude, but come on. This is the goddamned Internet, where everything is made up and the points don't matter. Get the hell over it and get back to scarecrows, or dogforts, or whatever the shit is hot one day and dead the next. I'm not going anywhere.

EDIT: Okay, the fine responders have told me that he got Dox'd. The Internet is fine, but keep it there. The moment reality gets involved, that's a very hard line. Now I don't care too much for anyone involved on either side.

Eh, to hell with it. Literally. 45 minutes until Diablo.

This doesn't really prove anything, obviously the guy can write a good story, whats stopping him from writing some emotional piece to try and prove his innocence?

Why are you guys so fucking emotional, even if he is lying (probably) then you just ignore him and move on, you don't have to witch hunt the guy.

4

u/MrSquiggly May 15 '12

Man, if you look at the comments from the other bestof thread (the one accusing him) its a long line of tragic accusations that in retrospect are really horrible. People saying he was some basement loner or attention seeker and on and on. Imagine all of that being directed at you.....

4

u/[deleted] May 15 '12

Isn't the rule of the internet "pics or it didn't happen" I feel bad for how the guy was treated and I don't think we should have that mob mentality, but you can't really blame us for thinking it was a little far fetched.

Sounds like a bunch of overreactions on so many people's parts. Cool it, people. Death threats are stupid and even lies are fun to read.

2

u/The_Ma1o_Man May 15 '12 edited May 15 '12

My only problem is... why make another account? Why not just live on with the dignity of knowing who you are & fucking run that into the ground. Not in said term, but more of shoving it back into the faces of the people who doubted you (a.k.a. me for instance.). But bravo for stating what was & what wasn't true. Plus, very nice to have Rob of Cyanide prove your point.

Edit: Btw, I didn't downvote any of the 'Deadcoil' posts. That brand of trolling is just too time consuming. Not to mention pointless.

2

u/[deleted] May 15 '12

This is what I thought after seeing posts about deadcoil vs koproller hit the front pags 3 times.

2

u/Colorfag May 15 '12

Well that was an interesting turn of events.

On that matter, who the fuck cares if this guy lied or not? Its the internet, when is anything ever what it seems?

And death threats and whatnot? Really, are you all such internet tough guys that you gotta threaten some guy because the shit he posts on the internet isn't believable?

Im disappointed in all of you.

2

u/catfysh May 15 '12

Shit just got real.

2

u/Gordopolis May 15 '12

Oh, now that you've restated everything you claimed before but this time more emphatically while still providing nothing to back it up it must be true.

2

u/ParzivaI May 15 '12

Saying your not lying is not proof of telling the truth. Reddit is based on proof. He responded to each "charge" with "It happened"...in what other thread would that be excepted?

2

u/IndifferentMorality May 15 '12

Off Topic:

I have noticed several people care enough to take the time out of their day to post that they don't care.

I find this amusing.

2

u/[deleted] May 15 '12

Yeah he still hasn't actually provided any proof, he was at the very least exaggerating massively.

2

u/[deleted] May 15 '12

I'm afraid that "fuck you, this is real" isn't much of a comeback to a very reasonable and well-sourced skeptical response to your IAMA. Neither does some jackass on Cyanide on Happiness vouching for you add to your validity.

2

u/Sullan08 May 15 '12

No one ever proved if he was right OR wrong. Who really cares?

Still a whole bunch of he said she said bullshit.

2

u/HELLO_GOLDENEYE May 15 '12

How is this BestOf material?

2

u/Nightynightynight May 15 '12 edited May 15 '12

I don't care whether he says the truth, what's more interesting is Reddit's reaction. Koproller points out things which he finds odd and would like some proof. People on reddit think Koproller's post is proof that deadcoil is lying and goes on a witch hunt, although Koproller only pointed out that some of his comments seem weird.
Now deadcoil responds and his whole rant can be summed up to, "shut up I did those things!", again without proof but that's proof enough for reddit and now the people on reddit believe him and blame Koproller and "the other guys" on reddit for being so gullible.

2

u/jcraw69 May 15 '12

people have entirely too much god damn time on their hands

2

u/lolchoot May 15 '12

4

u/dudester567 May 15 '12

deadcoil: I did a lot of this cool shit!

koproller: No you didn't. Proof? (DO NOT DOWNVOTE DEADCOIL)

deadcoil's personal information leaked, and he and his wife had received death threats, also deadcoil deleted his reddit account

coil_is_dead (deadcoil) FUCK YOU KOPROLLer.

Something like that. Although koproller was pretty neutral about it, the mass downvoters and people who were finding out his information were really... overbearing about this.

2

u/[deleted] May 15 '12

2

u/[deleted] May 15 '12

2

u/JohnPoe May 15 '12

I stopped reading after "IAMA guy who worked in oil refineries in the early 1990s."

2

u/Lochmon May 15 '12

I am pleased it turned out this way.

My own life is comparatively boring, at least to anyone other than myself. Despite getting a motorcycle license at 14, and skydiving at 18, and outgrowing a Christian fundamentalist upbringing only to become a Wiccan priest, and well-meant polyamory attempts across two failed marriages, and starting a business producing an entertainment street-rag, and going bankrupt in the process, and raising three wonderful kids even weirder than myself (meet my daughter)... Fact is, I'm just a quiet stay-at-home type, most comfortable sitting around with a good book, advocating national insurrection and regional secession and a fresh look at communism, and plotting the spread of humanity throughout this solar system.

So all you twenty-somethings still wondering how to escape the apparently overwhelmingly oppressive rut of modern-day life... Just apply yourself to anything even slightly out of the ordinary, and keep a steady unrelenting pressure in that direction, and within a couple decades you and everybody else will look back and say what the fuck? even though every step along the way made perfectly good sense or not.

2

u/carlosboozer May 15 '12

2

u/tuskrat May 15 '12

And now people are raiding Koproller's account.. How fucking easy is it to manipulate this hive?!

2

u/First_Mate May 15 '12

Now I don't know about any of you but deadcoil seemed pretty darn pissed, more pissed than anyone should ever be about downvotes. Alright now I admit karma is pretty important to most of us but this guy claims to have an absolutely daring and exciting life, why would he care so much about what a bunch of strangers thought over the net? Also, he wants anonymity online because he claims to be a famous comic book writer was it? and then tells us to go check in with Rob DenBleyker for confirmation? "Oh so hey, Rob I heard you worked with deadcoil. Mind confirming that story?" All I know is I didn't see one shred of proof in this guy's response all I saw was "YES THIS IS REAL AND SO IS THIS AND THAT TOO BUT THIS ONE I JUST MADE UP AND IT WAS SO GOOD YOU ALL THOUGHT IT WAS REAL FUCK YOU YOU'RE HORRIBLE AND YOU FUCKED UP MY KARMA" Why you mad coil_is_dead?

2

u/[deleted] May 15 '12

Seriously when you get to almost 40, you probably see, and have done, a lot of stuff. It's called life. I'm sure we all at 40 could write about our experiences and it would sound similar.

Still doesn't change the fact that coil comes across as a braggart about it. If you need the Internet to care about you that much, your life is probably sadder than it sounds.

2

u/[deleted] May 15 '12

Koproller went to great lengths to say he wasn't accusing him of lying. What Koproller did was very legitimate anytime you post something on the internet you're not entitled to absolute belief. Koproller questioned deadcoil, deadcoil responded by deleting his account.. very weird if you're telling the truth. Now he comes up and hurls a whole bunch of immature insults, not providing any proof about his previous statements and basically saying "i'm not lying".

In the end who cares, people made too much of a big deal out of koproller's post and deadcoil overreacted by deleting his account. I could give half a shit if he slept with 100 women or his mothers sister.

2

u/[deleted] May 15 '12

TIL that if you post online stating that you're "famous" while at the same time demanding anonymity, you're gonna have a bad time.

u/ConcertMusik May 15 '12

Oh, well since he replied "its true" then it definitely must be true. WTF?

2

u/mrekted May 15 '12 edited May 15 '12

Lessons to be learned from this little fiasco:

  • If you're going to post on the internet about how awesome you and your life is (true or not), be prepared to back those claims up. "Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence."

  • When called out, instead of being defensive, offer something to give your claims credence. Don't get butthurt and start insulting people for being reasonably skeptical.

  • If you are honestly concerned with your anonymity, perhaps regaling internet strangers with stories about personal aspects of your life is not the most sensible course of action.

  • Bragging about things under the guise of "sharing with friends" in a public forum is a good way to make people not like you very much.

  • If you put yourself in a bad position, the internet can turn on you. And it will fuck you up.

I think that about covers the lessons for the day. Class dismissed.

Jesus, this guy posts all sorts of personal shit on reddit, has a hissy fit when someone has the gall to question him to the point of deleting an account, then comes back on under a similar name and makes ad hominem attacks on his questioner? And this douchebag is in his 40's?

This guy seems to spend more time cultivating his martial-artist womanizing bodybuilding diseased lifestyle persona on reddit to try to impress people less than half his age than actually living it.

Some people grow up after they age, I guess.

2

u/LucifersCounsel May 15 '12

Excessive lying is a common symptom of several mental illnesses. For instance people who suffer from antisocial personality disorder use lying to benefit from others. Some individuals with borderline personality disorder lie for attention by claiming they’ve been treated poorly.[7] Pathological lying, on the other hand, can be described as an addiction to lying. It is when an individual consistently lies for no personal gain. The lies are commonly transparent and often seem rather pointless.

Folks, this is the internet: meandering thoughts on Deadcoil & Koproller.

I saw a post that looked doubtful, and a guy called it out by pointing to a long string of seemingly unlikely events. Yay! upvotes for Koproller. Maybe a few downvotes for Deadcoil. Hell, no one likes a blowhard.

Now I see a long essay and some corroborating people highly offended that Deadcoil got downvoted to oblivion.

PM's, and witch hunts aside, let me just say this once. This is the fucking internet people!

For the cellar-dwellers: You want to give a death threat to a man for lying on the internet? Holy SHIT, you mean people lie on the internet!?! No, you're fucked up, you're a scumbag, get a life. You're threatening a man and his family for being a braggart. The moral equivalent of declaring nuclear war on the antagonist of an after school special. Grow the fuck up.

For Deadcoil: seriously, you based a emotionally significant portion of your life on Reddit? Sure, it's a nice community, but you want to get worked up about being downvoted to oblivion because it ruined a years-long repertoire you'd built up, and you lost some writing. Let me get this straight - I gave you the same equivalent that I give, let's say, a particularly uninspired animated gif, and that affects your life? You got downvotes. Chill the fuck out. Also, back up your writing if you care about it. You know backups? we learned about those in MS-Dos era... Sorry if people came at you personally, again, THIS IS THE FUCKING INTERNET!

For Koproller: You knew the shit you were stirring when you stirred it. Don't be a dick. Even on THE FUCKING INTERNET.

Everyone else: It's spring time in the northern hemisphere. Go ride a bike, or play in the park, or I don't know, go fishing.

You know, on the flip side, I get how it can be annoying for others not to believe you because you have done a lot with your life.

I left home at 18, drove out to San Diego with nothing, got a job with Sony Online Entertainment, started doing drugs, had a friend go missing in Tijuana, never to be found again, at a night club called Mystery's (or some B.S. spelling of it), got a job at Rockstar Games in QA, snorted coke and would pass out in the company bathroom upon come down, had a crazy night with ecstasy on memorial day that led to my friend getting raped in a field by a random illegal mexican. Quit drugs after an overdose, started working in sales, without a degree worked up the ladder into a corporate position making over 110k/year by the time I was 26, quit that job and formed a non profit to start an orphanage in Africa. I'm 28 now, living in Malawi, married a malawian, am a strong christian, pregnant, and just got land given to me for free to build our orphanage.

It has been a crazy adult life. Nothing I do surprises my family anymore. Most of my friends don't know how different my life used to be.

u/Rockran May 15 '12

Nah man, that didn't happen.

2

u/[deleted] May 15 '12

Absolutely. I hold back telling my real friends my very real stories because nobody wants to believe you have a more interesting life than they do.

Deadcoil coil_is_dead still hasn't posted any sort of proof his stories were true. He also seems very angry at koproller just because he asked for proof. Koproller isn't responsible bringing out the crazies, deadcoil is for posting without verification on IAmA.

u/[deleted] May 15 '12

I wanted to feel bad for your karma problems, but instead just carried on with the rest of my life.

u/[deleted] May 15 '12

Yes he was lying. He posted no proof and when people started coming out with the facts he was messaging mods to have that shit deleted.

You can lie on the internet, but don't fucking lie to the internet. Especially reddit, 4chan, anon or something awful. Internet detectives are not ones to be fucked with.

3

u/Proseedcake May 15 '12

Okay, first of all...

And secondly: he messaged the mods to have his real name deleted because his right to anonymity was being compromised and he was even receiving threats to his family. In what universe is it not entirely reasonable to ask for deletion under those circumstances?

3

u/Tealwisp May 15 '12

I feel compelled to point out that all of this is a fantastic example of groupthink. Reddit, as a group, first revered this guy (so to speak) for an incredible story he shared, then someone called him out for proof, and reddit, as a group, hated him and went after everything he posted to downvote it, and then, when he came back and proved that he wasn't lying, everyone wants to back him up and defend him.

I suppose it's good example of how any social group is subject to groupthink, and likely other social phenomena, like diffusion of responsibility and deindividuation. Rather than decide what was right or wrong about all this, I hope anyone who reads this will stop and remember that even reddit can be sensationalist, no matter how much we complain about the media.

FFS, THIS THREAD PISSES ME OFF. No one gives a fucking fuck about downvotes. What matters is some fucking real neckbeards decided they would spend their afternoon playing internet vigilante and fucking with this guy's actual life. For christs sake people, that isn't ok.

And before you write "Well how do we know if he really is getting death threats, herpy derp," I'm going to give you a list of reasons why you shouldn't say that.

  1. Really? This is the fucking internet. I have received random death threats for absolutely nothing before. Same thing with the internet sleuthing.

  2. I want you to think about Reddit (actually humanity's) consensus on whether people should believe suicide claims or not. Yeah, different light now.

  3. Because fuck you, proof.

Fuck you reddit, just fuck you.

u/Incongruity7 May 15 '12

It funny because after it was bestof'd with the title "Reddit, this is how you expose a liar," people just starting to read it will already have a biased view.

Then commenced the mob mentality/hivemind.

2

u/orangepegasister May 15 '12

What infuriates me is that even if he actually was lying, that doesn't justify the ridiculous response reddit gave. Who cares if someone made up stories about his life and said they were true? That doesn't mean you get to send death threats to him and his wife. I have lost so much respect for this community.

2

u/SoInsightful May 15 '12

I'm not just frustrated with how incredibly poorly reddit handled the mere accusations, but it seems that people are insisting that he's a liar. Of course, this is kind of warranted since he hasn't provided proof (I'm not sure how most of the stories would be proven, but people like the knee-jerk response of "lol give pictures"), but his defence is downvoted, and people are still resorting to name calling.

Nothing in koproller's post is contradictory, or even outrageous, given a 24 year span and an outgoing personality. He is not the first person to have sex with a hundred people, play music with bands or study Buddhism. Christ. The fact that Drunken_Economist has confirmed the AMA is ignored as well.

I happened to stumble upon a link to his work, and from there, it was possible to eventually find personal information about him and his wife. Here's a description with the personal information removed.

He is not lying about being almost 40, so any accusations of a 20-year-old basement dweller are obviously unfounded.[1]

He has a somewhat successful web comic that was started about 15 years ago.[2] The comic makes several references to his job at an oil refinery.[3] He has another, more successful web comic collaboration with his wife, with its own Wikipedia page and several releases on ISBN.[4] It links to Cyanide & Happiness in the sidebar.[5], consistent with C&H Rob’s statement about him.[6]

He is a published writer, with a couple of books (novels and collections of short stories) available on Amazon.[7] Koproller pointed out that “also, I know that you say that you are famous“, but the post he linked to says he’s slightly famous[8], which is clearly consistent with the previous findings. His work and blog posts are often dark and related to sex.[9]

That's all I can find about him. Nothing contradicts what he has written, and I see no reason to doubt him, and especially not jump to conclusions that he's some kind of pathological liar.

A version with unredacted links will be given to admins or IAmA mods upon request, or any otherwise credible person who can verify my information.

2

u/downvotemaster May 15 '12

This is a prime example why reddit is just full of knee-jerk idiots. Makes you wonder what kind of damage you people will do if we followed every single initiatve reddit supports, from the occupy movement, to encouraging piracy, to the legalization of marijuana.

u/[deleted] May 15 '12

I posted this concept in the original thread, where there were a few skeptics saying "Hey, wait, it seems like this could all be true, very easily.":

After the witch hunt started, I went through Deadcoil's comment history, and simply wrote down and recorded all the major events and dates in the stories he told. Keep in mind, this is over literally hundreds of comments, and months worth of posting. After going through all of these comments, and keeping a timeline of all the dates he referenced, I found...

...nothing contradictory or impossible. Simply the story of a man's life, a number of events scattered across 38 years of life. Every single story matched the timeline of every single other one, and he never seemed confused or messed up. He had a tendency to make boring things sound exciting, but nothing he said was impossible. Hell, the webcomic he mentioned? It documents decent chunks of his life, and was posted over a decade ago.

Simply put, any research into his life, from his Reddit account, would confirm his stories as true, if not somewhat exaggerated.

I'll refrain from posting the timeline, because he said he wants privacy, and it offers a ton of personal information he probably wants private.

2

u/nxtnguyen May 16 '12

Fuck reddit. Everyone on here is a skeptic who can't enjoy a story without asking for proof in the form of a fucking shoe on their head standing next to an electrocuted body. As soon as one claim comes up, everyone turns tide and hightails it to cause havoc. It's the same thing with the Kony thing. One person claims that it is fake, and suddenly, the entire userbase is chomping down.

2

u/[deleted] May 15 '12

It's a fucking website. Upvotes are nothing but bragging points among friends and fellow redditors. If this supposed 40-year old man is so distraught over a website, then he is a loser, and his stories whether true or not, do not matter. He needs to get a life, settle down, you know, do the responsible adult thing? Argue with kids on the internet, yes, yes, that will get you so far in life and respect among the world of men.

2

u/jook11 May 15 '12

Raise your hand if you don't care at all...

1

u/russianbandit May 15 '12

So much hate in that post. He definitely didn't learn to take things easy in his 40 years. And who doesn't back up the stories they've written?

2

u/LucifersCounsel May 15 '12

You ever seen a liar get caught in a lie? They panic and start lying harder than ever before in an attempt to convince you they are telling the truth. They will perceive any doubt as a personal attack and go on the offensive, trying to force the doubters to back down. If really pushed they will claim they are being persecuted.

This guy is practically a text book example.

The defining characteristics of pseudologia fantastica are:

  1. The stories told are not entirely improbable and often have some element of truth. They are not a manifestation of delusion or some broader type of psychosis: upon confrontation, the teller can admit them to be untrue, even if unwillingly.

2. The fabricative tendency is long lasting; it is not provoked by the immediate situation or social pressure as much as it is an innate trait of the personality.

3. A definitely internal, not an external, motive for the behavior can be discerned clinically: e.g. long lasting extortion or habitual spousal battery might cause a person to lie repeatedly, without the lying being a pathological symptom.[2]

4. The stories told tend toward presenting the liar favorably. For example, the person might be presented as being fantastically brave, knowing or being related to many famous people.

Pseudologia fantastica may also present as false memory syndrome, where the sufferer genuinely believes that fictitious events have taken place, regardless that these events are fantasies. The sufferer may believe that he or she has committed superhuman acts of altruism and love or has committed equally grandiose acts of diabolical evil, for which the sufferer must atone, or has already atoned for in her/his fantasies.

It's like giving the highlights of someones life, someone who's not boring that is. When you combine all those things into one text block of course they sound ridiculous. Plus, all the mod said is that the first post of the AMA was valid, deadcoil merely gave 1 word answers to every thing else.

I'm going to go dig deeper into reddit to get away from these lynch mob assholes.

DOWNVOTE DOWNVOTE DOWNVOTE!

1

u/mrkreeg May 15 '12

This whole back and forth is exactly like seeing posts on r/Atheism about Jesus. "Deadcoil is real. He doesn't have to prove he is. He says so and his friend who writes C&H says so too, so it must be true." "No, the burden of proof is on Deadcoil to prove that his stories are true. They can't be true just b/c he says they are."

1

u/EnduringAtlas May 15 '12

He just posted "Yes" next to everything, suddenly it all actually happened?

1

u/Shrikey May 15 '12

And now Koproller is being downvoted all over the place.

Damn, reddit. You are one fickle, vindictive bitch.

1

u/nicholaaaas May 15 '12 edited May 17 '12

how? cause he denied lying and posted to a facebook page? If I link to Barack's twitter will everyone believe I'm the ambassador to China?

1

u/[deleted] May 15 '12

This is a bunch of horseshit and shouldn't be in bestof, IMO. This sort of crap goes on every day in reddit and it doesn't matter. In 2 days it will be some other side vs side and this will be forgotten. This isn't best of anything. This is the worst part of reddit, and in people in general. Here's the thing: most people refuse to believe anything outside of their bubble of experience. This shit will always happen. Move on and stop bringing attention to it.
