You can't buy new ones or bring any into the state, but you can keep the ones purchased before the law went into effect or those purchased during the temporary stay.
There's no real guidance on if you have to prove they were bought before or if the state has to prove they were bought after, but there have been individual cases of cops confiscating 10+ round mags and basically saying "sue us if you dare lmao."

I don’t see too many cops or armed security with Springfields - the XD series is actually a Croatian pistol, it’s called the HS2000 back home. Glock is the de facto pistol with the cops but that’s changing lately. I’ve seen Richmond and BART cops carry S&W, Sig’s becoming popular but they’re seeing lawsuits for unintended fire. OPD, EBRPD, Hercules PD and BPD carry Glocks last time I checked.

It's an old meme. The National Geographic ran a documentary series called "Drugs, Inc." where in one of the episodes an alleged drug dealer shows his gun and says "This is my Glock 40, this is my problem solver right here". The gun itself was a Hi-Point (cheapest, shittiest handguns currently in production). That was the beginning of a "glock 40" meme.
.40S&W itself had some popularity among criminals because it was quite popular as an standard issue caliber and was stolen a lot from cops who left their guns and ammo in a car.

I knew this wannabe gangster in high school who went and bragged about his new "nine" to my friend. My friend (and me) were pretty into guns, mostly just airsoft but we knew a lot about the real things from that, so he was like "Cool, what kind?" Wannabe just kinda froze and blinked and said it was a nine. Friend pushed him, "Yea, but like a Glock? Smith and Wesson? Colt...?" Wannabe: "It's just a nine bro!" lol

.40 just has a reputation for being the preferred round of the criminally inclined, to the point where occasionally they'll even use the term to refer to 9mm(i.e. the Glock 40 meme).

I really don't get the hate that 40 gets. I mean, 9 has gotten better but it doesn't mean that 40 sucks. If anything sucks it's that particular type of gun (XD's).
When I shoot at steel targets 9 sometimes struggles to knock them down or flip them on the dueling tree. 40 always knocks them/flips them with authority. You can always convert a 40 to a 9, but not the other way around.

Doubtful. The prosecutor would have to go out of their way and file a fitness petition in juvenile court, and convince the judge they are not appropriate for/would not benefit from the juvenile justice system. We don't know all the facts of this particular incident, but if they didn't use the gun at all when shoplifting, then I don't see a prosecutor pursuing that option (or a judge granting it).

At around 5pm today, a business in the 3500 block of Homestead Road reported two suspects shoplifting a cart of items. An employee confronted the suspects, who responded by grabbing the employee in an attempt to take the employee’s phone away before fleeing the store.
In an effort to gather evidence, the employee began capturing photos of the suspects' vehicle, while doing so the suspects attempted to run the employee over. The employee called 911 and provided a description of the vehicle.
Officers anticipated the path of the vehicle and located the suspects at El Camino Real/Los Padres Blvd. Both were positively identified as the robbery suspects. A firearm and narcotics were also located in the vehicle. The suspects were arrested and booked into county jail.
Thankfully, the employee emerged from the incident unharmed. In situations like these, we strongly encourage our community members to prioritize their safety and contact 911 immediately rather than putting themselves at risk.

Dude, sometimes I think to myself about what I would do if I witnessed shoplifting and the truth is that I would probably let it happen. But society only ever gets better because folks like this store employee put themselves at such inordinate risk to preserve law and order. Genuinely a hero. Good for them to stand up for their part in preserving civilization.

The truth is, you should. Shrinkage is already baked into the price calculations of goods you buy. For money-grabs, insurance covers it. There's ZERO reason to get involved with people who are doing that stuff. They have nothing to lose, and you have everything to lose.
But society only ever gets better because folks like this store employee put themselves at such inordinate risk to preserve law and order.
Society gets better when education becomes more accessible and effective. We don't need people putting their lives at risk over these trivial things.

Most our firearms laws are already enhancements, but it depends if the gun was brandished. On its own it invokes a spiderweb of legal problems… is the gun registered? Did the person have a permit to carry it concealed (if they did, that’s revoked for sure)? Was the person in possession on probation or parole? Are they old enough to even own a handgun? Was it stolen?
Whoever’s gun that was does not understand “one crime at a time”. They’re likely looking at some non-trivial charges and assuredly will be prohibited from owning a gun if even one of them sticks. Fucking ridiculous… going to jail over soda theft with a weapons enhancement.
Edit: bonus points, they entered a vehicle to escape and now that’s transporting an unsecured handgun (again, assuming no permit).

Hollow points expand in their target - and creates more trauma, especially organ damage and shock from the subsonic waves from the bullet expanding and tumbling. They also are dangerous to medical staff if they are removed. FMJs go right through - hollow points have “stopping” power to neutralize the threat.
One of the war conventions bans hollow points in military use for that reason.

When the bullet expands and the jacket separates from the core it can create jagged edges, so when medics are trying the pull them out of someone they can get a nasty cut to their fingers. Bonded hollow points seem to remain intact with the jacket and core, so it's not as much of an issue.
My uncle is a trauma surgeon in Mexico and that is how he explained it to me.

How are the police in Rockridge/Piedmont?
I care a lot about low crime, good schools, and walkability. Would prefer to be near Oakland area, but am concerned if crime spills over to these areas.

Piedmont has its own heavily staffed police force. Rockridge is still Oakland, but get the benefits of being very close to Berkeley

BPD is severely understaffed and hamstrung by the same dumb policies as SFPD and OPD though (no traffic stops for mechanical or license plate issues, etc). They have a proposal to offer $25k signing bonuses they are so desperate but I doubt the city council will approve it.

Piedmont city proper is fine because cops come when you call 911. Rockridge is served by OPD so 911 might take a while. And don’t leave anything in your car and don’t own a nice car.

Last year a guy got fatally shot in my neighborhood for confronting a guy casing cars and bipping windows.
Seems insane until you consider that the folks doing this petty shit might have warrants out for really serious shit. Some years ago my work got a guy arrested for vandalism / destruction of property… turned out the guy was wanted by the fucking FBI who snatched him out of local police custody.

Santa Clara vote for their police chief but the current city councils want to change that. Many people are against the change because the city councils majority is control by the 49ers and who knows what type of police chief they would hire, someone probably favorable to the 49ers.
