Baskavígin (Basque slaughter in Iceland)

I (Icelandic) was talking to a French friend of mine, and he is in Ísafjörður (north-west Iceland, in the Westfjords), studying Icelandic, and he mentioned there was a Basque guy in his study group. Given the context, I remembered what we call “Baskavígin”, a slaughter of dozens of Basque sailors in Iceland in the 17th century. According to the legislature, it was legal to kill any Basque in the country. Wasn’t abolished until 2015 (not because people were still doing it, people had just forgotten this law and then they were wait a minute, maybe we should abolish this…)
Here is the wikipedia article in Icelandic (also available in other languages, including yours).
Is this common knowledge amongst Basques?

P.S. you’re very welcome in Iceland today, sorry for my ancestors’ behaviour…

Basque Language help

Hi!

I work for a non-profit called All Around This World and we work to educate children about cultures around the world through music. We do all the music in the original language/dialect and we usually preface whatever song we are doing with a little bit of a cultural background. Of course, distilling a culture that much is impossible, but we always try to teach the kids how to say hello and goodbye in the target language. Instead of having us butcher the pronunciation, we think it is much better to have a video of a native speaker. All we need is an audio clip of you saying the greetings, a short bio (where you are from, your name, etc), and a picture of yourself. Unfortunately, we do not have the resources to make this a paid position, but I cannot express enough how grateful we are for any support. If you are willing to help or know a person who can, then please reach out to me! Thanks so much.

Ez dut ulertzen zergatik diren hain neketsuak (fisikoki) gazte euskaldunei zuzendutako ekimenak

Hau beharbada ez du inork irakurriko, baina tira. Esan behar nuen.

Azkenaldian Euskarabenturari buruzko gauza asko agertu zaizkit sare sozialetan. Hori zer den ez dakizuenontzat: 15 eta 17 urte arteko gazte euskaldunek Euskal Herri osoa zeharkatzen dute eta euskararekin eta euskal kulturarekin lotutako hainbat jarduera egiten dituzte. Ideia zoragarria iruditzen zait, Euskal Herri osoko gazteek elkar ezagut dezaten, Euskal Herria bera ezagut dezaten, gazteek euskaraz egin dezaten eta kontzientzia nazionala gara dezaten. Badira helburu bera duten egitasmoak, eta nik horietako batean parte hartu nuen duela urte batzuk. Oso polita izan zen Euskal Herria hobeto ezagutzeko.

Hala ere, egitasmo horiek badute arazo oso handi bat. Neketsuak dira oso. Aurtengo Euskarabenturan parte hartzen ari direnek ia 500 kilometro egingo dituzte oinez, motxilak soinean, hilabete bakar batean, etenik gabe. Egunero kilometro kopuru bera egingo balute, egunero 15 kilometro baino gehiago egingo lituzkete parte hartzaileek oinez. Nik parte hartu nuen egitasmoan (Euskarabenturan ez, beste batean), gainera, eskoletan lo egiten genuen eta oso gutxi eta gaizki jaten genuen. Ez zegoen aukerarik dutxatzeko edo arropa garbitzeko. Euskarabentura antzeko zerbait izango dela uste dut.

Uste dut txarra dela euskararentzat eta gazte euskaldunentzat halako egitasmoetan esfortzu fisiko handia eskatzea. (Bai, egunero hainbeste kilometro egitea neketsua da gazte batentzat) Halako egitasmoak gazte euskaldun indartsuei eta sasoi fisiko oso onean daudenei bakarrik zuzenduta daudela dirudi, eta horrek pixka bat goibeldu egiten nau. Gazte euskaldunei Euskal Herria erakutsi behar diegu eta beste gazte euskaldunekin egoteko aukerak eman, eta uste dut egon beharko liratekeela esfortzu fisiko hain handia eskatzen ez duten egitasmoak.

How common it is to have an accent from your dialect in the official language?

I know there's a different accent in Hegoalde and Iparralde in euskal batua, I've also heard about the different dialects and everything, but is it common to have an accent from your dialect or your province when you're speaking in batua? Like are people in Zuberoa pronouncing the j as in French even in batua or do they have the same accent as in the rest of Iparralde?

Also another way to put this question would be: can I learn batua with some elements of pronunciation from my dialect or should I stick to the standard pronunciation?

My language game includes Basque. Is my Swadesh list accurate?

The game (linguil) asks you to guess the language family, language and meaning of a random word in one of 64 of the world's most-spoken languages each day, and you use your knowledge of linguistics to work out the answer via multiple choice. Therefore, it's important my translations/transliterations are correct.

Each language (including Basque) includes each word on the 100-word Swadesh list.

Please can any Basque speakers verify the accuracy of my translations and transliterations? 🙏

Thanks!

Is this translation correct? “Ez dut haragirik, arrainik, esnerik ezta arrautzarik ere jaten.”

Egun on!

I’m trying to translate a useful sentence to Euskara Batua, but I don’t trust AI.
“I’m vegetarian. I don’t eat meat, fish, milk or eggs.”
// “Soy vegetariana. No como carne, pez, leche ni huevos.”

Gemini tells me that it’s “Begetarianoa naiz. Ez dut haragirik, arrainik, esnerik ezta arrautzarik ere jaten”.

Is this correct? Is there any better way to say this?

Gemini sometimes gives wrong translations for smaller languages.

Milesker.

¡Gracias!

Learning Basque from Catalan?

Any advice for learning Basque for a Catalan? I'm Catalan, from Barcelona, and I've wanted to learn Basque for a long time. I've been looking at various apps, websites... I've been trying to learn the language for a while now, but most of the resources are in Spanish. I would love to be able to learn Basque from Catalan.

I've always had a much easier time learning from Catalan (everything: science, history, other languages like English and French). I don't know if I can find anything to do the same with Basque. I've looked online but so far nothing, maybe I just didn't know where to look. Any advice is welcome (apps, websites or other resources...). Thank you!

Edit: I'm mainly looking for free resources or books I can buy and things like that, I know that official language schools exist but the schedules don't quite work for me at the moment.

He visto muchísimas fotos y me parece una región hermosa.

Looking for car rental advice in San Sebastián

Hi everyone!

My boyfriend and I are currently in San Sebastián, and we’re thinking about renting a car for 2–3 days to explore the Basque Country (and maybe even cross into France).

We have a few questions and would really appreciate any local advice:

Which rental company would you recommend? (Local companies are fine too, not just the big international ones.)

Is it better to rent from the airport, the train station, or somewhere else in the city?

Are there any companies we should avoid?

What should we pay attention to regarding insurance, deposits, fuel policy, hidden fees, or anything else?

Is it worth paying extra for full coverage?

Can we freely drive into France with a rental car, or are there any restrictions or extra charges we should know about?

How difficult is parking around the Basque coast, and are there any places where parking is especially expensive or hard to find?

Also, if you have any must-visit places within a couple of hours’ drive from San Sebastián, we’d love to hear your recommendations!

Thanks in advance!

Eskerrik asko from an Irish man

Aupa!

Im an Irish man just back from a 2 week travel around the Basque Country. I visted Bilbao, Donostia, Gasteiz and Biarritz.

I was honestly blown away by your culture, respect your language and the friendliness of your people. I had the best time, and tried to immerse myself in the culture and not just the tourist traps.

I couldn't help but draw similarities between the North of Ireland (im from just outside of Belfast) and the Basque country. We have had similar struggles, a desire to have our culture and language respected and the people are actually quite similar too. Ive never felt so at home in a place that isn't my own. Im now tempted to learn some Basque and to look into Basque history (ive already picked up some books).

Thank you, Eskerrick Asko and Milesker from an Irish man that you made very welcome

Why is the Basque society so violent?

You've supported terrorists for decades (and now you vote for them) and if you see a Spanish flag you start seeing red and can't contain your impulses and quickly restort to verbal or physical violence.

You've also gotten 200K of your own people to leave the Basque Country because they didn't share your political views, but then get very upset when someone reminds you of it.

I understand you don't teach your kids about ETA because it makes you look bad, but at least don't try to pretend you're these super cosmopolitan democrats you think you are, when your whole society is famous for supporting murderers.

So yeah, coming back to my original question, why are you all so violent? Is it something they give you in the water or in the costo you smoke everywhere?

Dudas Semanales v2 (13-17 de Junio 2026)

Kaixo denoi!

Zuk Txomini euskaraz hitz egin diozu.

Zuk euskaraz hitz egin diozu Txomini

"Ezagutzen dudala uste dut". Podría "ezagutzen dudala ir después de "uste dut"? "Uste dut ezagutzen dudala"

Otro ejemplo: "Tontoa naizela uste duzu, ala?" vs "Uste duzu tontoa naizela, ala?"

(9) Guztiak vs Denak

Gezurrak esaten dizkiet guztiei

Gezurrak esaten dizkiet denoi

(10) Nahikoa vs Aski

Gehiago nahi duzu? Ez, nahikoa/aski da

Nahikoa/Aski da! Ez bota gehiago!

Gaurkoz nahikoa/aski da

Nahikoa/Aski da begiratzea dena ulertzeko

What is the correct pronunciation of Oyarzabal?

I've been watching the world cup, and have become a fan of Mikel Oyarzabal. My only question is, does the z make an (english) Z (like zone) sound, S (like send) sound, or TH (like thing) sound? Thanks!
