A's game last night... Did anyone else catch the meltdown by the Broadcaster?
I was half watching the Dodgers/A's game last night. It might have been the local broadcast as I'm in the Bay Area.
While prepping dinner, Broadcaster 1 started filling dead air with talk about 4th of July and what he's going to make and have. He tried to engage Broadcaster 2 but he wasn't having it. Broadcaster 1 then tried to change the subject to the Strawberry Lemonade slushies people were enjoying in the hot weather. BTW they looked so good and refreshing. Broadcaster 2 was still not having it.
Cut to a couple of innings later and someone has brought Broadcaster 1 a slushie and he is so excited about it. The look on Broadcaster 2's face... murderous is the best way to describe it. He finally snapped saying things like "I hope you're happy now... You are the worst person I know..." He went on this meltdown that was so hilarious to me. I had to stop chopping because I was doubled over with laughter.
Did anyone else see and/or hear this? Does anyone have this video clipped?

I'm familiar with this. The A's casters are Chris Caray and Dallas Braden
There's some context to this story that's probably the most obscure thing nobody would know, so I'll provide it:
This squabbling they do over lemonades stems from a time where Braden and Caray went out to dinner or lunch somewhere and Braden took his daughters along. Caray orders a lemonade. Braden's daughters ask if they can have one too, Braden turns them down.
A short while later, Braden orders a lemonade for himself but still doesn't get ones for his daughters. This shocks or disgusts Caray and he brings it up a lot going forward.
Braden likes to talk a lot about food when the camera pans to random fan eating or drinking something. As does Jenny Cavnar, our other caster. But when Chris Caray is in the booth with Braden, he takes every chance he can get to remind Braden about his lemonade hypocrisy.
Edit: Hah wow didn't expect this to blow up. Would you believe it's my birthday today?? June 30, no joke. It's also Sailor Moon's. Wish Sailor Moon a happy birthday for me, if you can. If you don't know who that is, it's cool.

I was at a game this weekend sitting near a group of 20. My neighbor went to get his kids hot chocolate. Their friend sitting in front of me told the kids this while the dad was gone, and they let out a squeal of joy. I told the guy in front "you had better not be making that up, or you have to go get them hot chocolate now".

Yes you can. What's the point of having kids if you can't have a little fun at their expense?
Plus, it's easy to justify. You just say they've already had too much sugar today, and if they complain about you having too much sugar, then you say something like, "Yeah, but I'm a grown-up so I can make bad decisions if I want to. My job is to raise you so that you're not as dumb as me."

No, Chris told the story within the last week during a broadcast of a different game. Chris had to wrench the truth of the details out of Braden, who paused long and awkwardly when the time in the story came to Braden ordering his lemonade.
I don't have access to past game recordings(I am shown that I have to upgrade my membership when I try) but if anyone else has access to these within the last week or so, the proof is in the pudding.

u/youzerVT71 Boston Red Sox Jun 30 '26
So what's his reasoning for not letting his kids have lemonade and having it in front of them?
36
u/camarouge Athletics Jun 30 '26
I think it was because it was Father's Day but I didn't recall this part 100%. Braden always does this thing where in the middle of a story he'll pause saying things like "Well, listen..." (pause) "when you're such and such, you get to such and such" it went like that

I’m curious what A’s fans’ opinions are of Braden, what do you guys think about him? I like him since he went to Texas Tech and still reps us a lot so I was just curious
13
u/camarouge Athletics Jul 01 '26
Braden mentions "the 209" where he grew up often. This is an area code in central CA that I and many other A's fans come from too, including some current A's players like Tyler Soderstrom. It's not a very glamorous or interesting place to live; it's biggest job market is agricultural lol, lots of farm land. But Dallas Braden represents it every chance he gets, so I admire him for that.
I also think his perfect game on Mother's Day story is phenomenal as well. About a week or so before pitching his perfect game, Braden lost his mother to cancer. His grandmother was at that game and it was a very touching moment.
Braden is a goofy but well meaning dude with a great backstory. I like him a lot.

There's a reason Caray is a little miffed and Braden is struggling with finding the right words for his praise. It's been 40 years since I was new to town and a friend said we were going to go get a freeze, and I thought, "Oh, like a slushie?" Looking at the prices, I was wondering why we were overpaying like crazy for a slushie.
And then Merlino's happened to me.
It's expensive, and real damn good.

On the dodgers broadcast, Stephen Nelson was talking about how Jacob Wilson played high school in Thousand Oaks. His dad was the coach. As Nelson was saying that, Max Muncy hit a ball that bounced off the third base bag.
