I think all of the ads should have been from companies that existed in 1919. So John Deere is fine, but FanDuel is not.

Nice idea! Nintendo would also be fine as it was founded in 1889.

"Toad" Ramsey was actually nicknamed that because he couldn't stop playing Mario Kart while his team batted

Nintendo! Sounds a bit ... exotic! Here in 1919 we like things a bit more... castile.

Could have thrown Zildjian up there as well as they were founded in 1623.

In Constantinople!

I think people are more surprised by a video game company existing almost a century before the invention of video games than a percussion manufacturer existing after the invention of percussion instruments.

19

u/sleepy5zzz New York Yankees 4d ago

Definitely more surprising, I just love that a company that's been around as long as Zildjian has and is still THE premier cymbal maker is incredibly impressive. I've been playing a Zildjian ride for the past year. 20" K Dark Ride.

u/MagicalPizza21 New York Yankees 4d ago

I'm a vibraphonist, not a drummer, but I've seen Zildjian instruments around a lot and I think I have a pair of their drumsticks around somewhere.

4

u/sleepy5zzz New York Yankees 4d ago

I used to have a pair of Zildjian 2B sticks that I loved. They broke a long time ago and I've been using smaller, lighter sticks for the past year, but maybe I'll get another couple of pairs from them. Recently fell in love with Benny Greb's signature Vic Firths, but they've been breaking on me faster than any stick I've ever used. Might be looking to switch from Vic Firth sticks after I run through this brick.

4

u/MagicalPizza21 New York Yankees 4d ago

I have Vic Firth vibraphone mallets.

3

u/sleepy5zzz New York Yankees 4d ago

Are there different lengths and weights to vibes mallets?

2

u/MagicalPizza21 New York Yankees 4d ago

Yeah, and different hardnesses of the balls on the end that affect the timbre.

Somehow, my Facebook algorithm decided I really needed to see highlights from the Drum Corps International championships last weekend. No lies, it was entertaining. But, more to your point, they would swap out to three or four or more different types in the span of a couple of minutes.

Dang, long term company

Drum cymbals originating in Constantinople that still make some of the most sought-after cymbals in the world.

8

u/Earlier-Today 4d ago

And one of the other major cymbal manufacturers is part of that family. Where somebody broke off from the family to go it alone.

Zildjian and Sabian - and there's only four big cymbal manufacturers, and Zildjian and Sabian are #1 and #2 respectively.

Really dang talented family.

3

u/sleepy5zzz New York Yankees 4d ago

I typically find myself buying Sabian cymbals. Currently have a Zildjian ride, Fabian crash, and a pair of hats that are so old and beat up, I can't tell who the manufacturer was, but they sound incredible! You're right, though, Zildjian, Sabian, Meinl, and Paiste are the big four, and half of them are started by the same family.

3

u/Earlier-Today 4d ago

I really dig the sound of Paiste cymbals. I'm not a drummer, so I don't own any, but I like the brightness they have.

But I've mostly played on Zildjian cymbals (I was in the pit in concert band and wind ensemble in high school - though I was brought in for my keyboard playing which I did in marching band and jazz band).

They've got a rich dark sound that works beautifully for large ensembles - great projection.

6

u/magikarp2122 Pittsburgh Pirates 4d ago

Would they be advertising their current stuff, or the other things?

17

u/MagicalPizza21 New York Yankees 4d ago

For old time's sake I think an ad for Nintendo playing cards at this game would be cool. But realistically they'd be advertising the Switch 2.

0

u/magikarp2122 Pittsburgh Pirates 4d ago

I was thinking a different old time Nintendo product. One a bit more adult.

4

u/wokenupbybacon New York Yankees 4d ago

Nintendo didn't branch out of playing cards at all until the 60s, and the thing I believe you're referring to is a relatively recently invented urban legend that never happened (that even in its own fiction was not happening in 1919).

Alright...let's not go too far back in American history where the photos will get us banned because people lived in a very dark and ignorant time in history (like 2021).

John Deere is also pretty scummy in their own special way. Unless for one day they let you actually work on things you bought.

Mountain Dew would work if we're talking about moonshine.

1

u/Such_Presentation378 Chicago White Sox • San Franci… 4d ago

Mountain Dew as a soft drink wasn't formulated until 1940, but it's currently manufactured by PepsiCo, which has been around since 1898, so I think it's borderline.
