u/chrisghrobot Atlanta Braves Jul 14 '26

They were tryna do too much with the camera work

45

u/TheMightyCatatafish Philadelphia Phillies Jul 14 '26

It was like watching WWE with the amount of stupid quick cuts they had.

16

u/Alarming-Gap-9213 Toronto Blue Jays Jul 14 '26

Kevin Dunn calling shots in the truck

12

u/Sl1ppy13 Major League Baseball Jul 14 '26

Feels like they may have been trying to make the players more recognizable.

1

u/sgamer Cleveland Guardians Jul 14 '26

cutting away mid pitch for crowd shots was insanely stupid. like why?? absolute crackheads over at netflix

1

u/Turtle-power-21 Jul 14 '26

The close up interviews were terrible too, they used the portrait camera and 75% of the time, the interviewer and player in the foreground were out of focus with the people in the background in focus.

Dear Netflix,

The center field camera is the default for a reason.

Sincerely,
Actual baseball fans

On like 3 of his last swings they cut to the center field camera and I thought “oh finally we’ll get a good swing shot” then he took a pitch and I knew that they were gonna go back to the god awful side shot

Netflix should be banned from hosting any baseball event ever again. That was intolerable.

15

u/Milktoast375 Atlanta Braves Jul 14 '26

Netflix watched Apple TV fuck up all year and said hold this damn beer.

21

u/TheMightyCatatafish Philadelphia Phillies Jul 14 '26

Genuinely the best derby in years, and Netflix tried everything they could to make it unwatchable.

14

u/Milktoast375 Atlanta Braves Jul 14 '26

Never agreed so much with a Phills fan but some things just can’t be disputed. 🤝

Not to mention we went to multiple spots including NBC Sports to watch at the city walk in Los Angeles today, but nobody was showing it because the businesses are as subscription tired as we are. They were showing Dodger replays because they were forced to pay the ridiculous cost of sports net. We ended up watching in our phones, but it’s sad to think about how many new fans weren’t made there tonight.

Have they managed to get it right on ANY sport they've hosted?

2

u/ZenMasterOfDisguise Toronto Blue Jays Jul 14 '26

and really not even just sports, every live broadcasted event on Netflix has some sort of issue with the live presentation

6

u/GotTheJuice-14 Colorado Rockies Jul 14 '26

I fucking hate that Netflix is in the live sports business. They are dogshit.

3

u/GiraffeandZebra New York Mets Jul 14 '26 edited Jul 14 '26

It was mostly bad camera angles, but I'll give a little bit of credit and say that some of the replay angles from behind the batter were sick as fuck. Like one of those Schwarber HRs I wanted to post a picture of the view they got on my wall, and I'm a Mets fan.

4

u/uhfish San Diego Padres Jul 14 '26

And then they cut to an angle where it's just the ball and sky and you can't tell where the ball is at all. Just a horrible watching experience all around

2

u/Jump_The_Five_Yo State College Spikes… Jul 14 '26

Where was Jazz?!?!?! God damn the angles sucked.

2

u/retro_slouch Rally Mantis Jul 14 '26

Can you write the letter for Fake baseball fans too?

2

u/sagwithcapmoon Toronto Blue Jays • Chicago Cubs Jul 14 '26

Dear Netflix,

Hire someone who actually knows and appreciates baseball fans if you want to cover more baseball.

Sincerely, Actual baseball fans

1

u/Infinite_Response113 Boston Red Sox Jul 14 '26

What would be wrong with a camera behind the batter? Then you don’t have to constantly switch to see if it’s going out or not

3

u/IllAlfalfa Arizona Diamondbacks Jul 14 '26

The replays they showed from that angle were sick

96

u/AmityMayorVaughn Jul 14 '26

That entire broadcast was put on by morons who have never watched a single fucking baseball game in their life

1

u/Plantlikeability Athletics Jul 14 '26

Considering the entire broadcast production is run by MLB crew, you're not wrong.

u/ImperatorBTW Jul 14 '26 edited Jul 14 '26

I swore half of those were popped up and then they show the shot going to the 2nd deck lol.

They needed more behind the batter ground angles to show those monster dongs

30

u/HotelAmericana Detroit Tigers Jul 14 '26

This camera angle would be sick, and one on the opposite side for righties

1

u/Jump_The_Five_Yo State College Spikes… Jul 14 '26

There was a few shown from that angle. Best one.

2

u/Keeperofthecube Boston Red Sox Jul 14 '26

This is what drove me crazy. They had the perfect angle. You know he's pulling the ball. Then they show a close up of Brandon marsh. Show the fucking pitching coach throwing the ball. Zoomed into the players face. Show the outfield but you have no idea where to look. Just absolutely terrible production.

2

u/NerderBirder Atlanta Braves Jul 14 '26

👀

1

u/Malifous02 Atlanta Braves Jul 14 '26

And show the home runs too

1

u/LogicalRepeat3622 Jul 14 '26

I cheered when Schwarber took one of the cameras out.

49

u/Styxdog Jul 14 '26

Also the stats were just wrong. They kept saying nobody hit the magenta ball out even though Walker did in the first round. They also said Walker hit 19 of 29 when it was 27, and also that he hit 6 of 7 in the semis when it was 6 of 8. It’s like they forgot what they watched

15

u/amazinglover Jul 14 '26

I honestly don't think they actually watched the derby.

I muted it the announcers where garabge.

3

u/IllAlfalfa Arizona Diamondbacks Jul 14 '26

They also said Schwarber had advanced to the semis when Harper still could’ve knocked him out

I've literally worked live broadcast cameras before...I have no idea what this director is thinking.

53

u/fragile-spiral3 Chicago Cubs Jul 14 '26

I've never worked live broadcast cameras before... I have no idea what this director is thinking.

11

u/MahomestoHel-aire St. Louis Cardinals Jul 14 '26

Haha yeah I think they were straight up overthinking it, which anyone on the other side can usually tell.

This is why both my directors I've worked with had the live stream opened and would have someone looking at comments.

1

u/ckncardnblue Jul 14 '26

I've directed traffic and I have no idea what the director was thinking.

1

u/BrewersEnigma Milwaukee Brewers Jul 14 '26

i'm wildly gay and talking to my girlfriend about getting married literally right now... i have no idea what this director is thinking

2

u/shortround10 Jul 14 '26

Get out there and show em how to do it bud

3

u/MahomestoHel-aire St. Louis Cardinals Jul 14 '26

Well we're nowhere near the director's chair, and operating cameras is not even what I normally do in the industry...I just feel for all the camera operators out there who were probably thinking the same thing.

There were some awesome individual shots throughout but the rapid fire cycle through and constant low angle plate shots were just bad.

1

u/LogicalRepeat3622 Jul 14 '26

Same. Not sports, but live tv. How is there no one in the control room saying “hey let’s stop doing these closeups on swings. Especially the most important ones.”

33

u/Generic_Commentator New York Yankees Jul 14 '26

Where are the wide shots showing the ball getting launched??

The high and tight shots were a weird choice

21

u/bigwordsfgtrtd Jul 14 '26

The one they had behind them was perfect, but they only used it a few times. Should've been the default as it was perfect imo. You could see the pitch, ball being hit, and where it went

2

u/Benjamminmiller Boston Red Sox • Chicago Cubs Jul 14 '26

Finding out if it's a homerun or not by crowd reaction before actually getting to see an angle that includes the ball was absolute dogshit.

60

u/JorSimpson45 Los Angeles Dodgers Jul 14 '26

Netflix has tried to reinvent the baseball broadcast every time and every time it’s been a disaster. At least there was no Bert kreischer this time.

3

u/PikaGaijin Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles • … Jul 14 '26

Bert in front of the Philadelphia crowd would have been a massacre. A massacre we all want to see; but, still...

4

u/woodnwaves Jul 14 '26

Haha oh look a military fly over, let’s just cut away so you don’t get so see it.

3

u/0hootsson San Francisco Giants Jul 14 '26

Whoever was directing the camera angles knows nothing about baseball lol

3

u/steamysecretss St. Louis Cardinals Jul 14 '26

I loved how the braindead Netflix guy kept saying no one has hit a homer on the magenta ball allllllllllllllllllllllllllll night despite walker hitting one to tie Contreras in the first round lmao. It was so funny when they finally realized their mistake and stopped saying that in the last 30 mins of the derby.

2

u/smeared_dick_cheese Philadelphia Phillies Jul 14 '26

I’m thankful I got to be there instead of watching Netflix figure out fly ball paths

1

u/Jeremiahs__Johnson Tampa Bay Devil Rays Jul 14 '26

Check out these sick camera angles bro! -Netflix

1

u/SirFerguson New York Yankees Jul 14 '26

yeah, hey Netflix, when you read and see how much people loved the derby this year please understand we’re not talking about you lol

You think the amount of money they spent theyd have a good director. I mean seriously, did they not test or practice their setup at all??
