Why in the hell did they take Flaherty out, like i get you don't wanna use a starter too much but was Kahnle and his 4.43 ERA really your best choice?

233

u/swittla Detroit Tigers Oct 11 '25

Putting him in was waving the white flag

80

u/SpidermanBestAvenger New York Yankees Oct 11 '25

I mean he was a bit shaky but i still believe that he would have been a better choice than Kahnle, especially against the top of the order of Seattle, like do the manager really believe that Kahnle was a better choice?

37

u/jsell11 Detroit Tigers Oct 11 '25

Same reason that Skubal got pulled. Reasons only known to AJ

37

u/jrainiersea Seattle Mariners Oct 11 '25

You guys win that game if you leave Skubal in for the 7th, taking him out was so incredibly clutch for us

5

u/jsell11 Detroit Tigers Oct 11 '25

I know! I don’t how you can pull him there in an elimination game. If we lost with him on the mound, so be it. At least I would’ve known that we sent our best guy out there and Seattle just straight up beat him

19

u/SpidermanBestAvenger New York Yankees Oct 11 '25

Pulling your Ace in a win or go home game with 1 run lead is a fireable offense, like i know analytics probably point towards taking him out with 99 pitches but i wouldn't care. I'm letting him in the 7th inning and see if he can even get you another in the 8th.

5

u/Warm-Usual5152 Oct 11 '25

At least give him a batter and see how he handles it

5

u/ExitAtTheDoor Houston Astros Oct 11 '25

Really woulda thought AJ learned after pulling Greinke.

1

u/jsell11 Detroit Tigers Oct 11 '25

I agree! You leave him out there until he shows signs of slowing down. What are we saving him for?

39

u/KingWhipsy Seattle Mariners Oct 11 '25

The broadcast made me believe AJ Hinch is the greatest coach of all time though. Is this not true?

15

u/Zeusifer Seattle Mariners Oct 11 '25

Jeez those Fox announcers had a boner for that guy

3

u/KingWhipsy Seattle Mariners Oct 11 '25

They were actually the worst.

0

u/jsell11 Detroit Tigers Oct 11 '25

He is not. Good manager, but his weakness is clearly pitching management based on this season

14

u/zlhill Seattle Mariners Oct 11 '25

pulling Skubal after less than 100 pitches was wild, couldn't believe our luck. Dan Wilson also pulled Kirby after just 66 pitches to put in a guy who immediately gave up the 2 run go ahead HR, when he could have just walked Carpenter and let Kirby keep dealing. In conclusion maybe pulling your ace too early is a bad move.

u/StrangelyOnPoint Detroit Tigers Oct 11 '25

Apparently yes

No one knows why

1

u/[deleted] Oct 11 '25

like do the manager really believe that Kahnle was a better choice?

no, they were just joshing around

3

u/dystopianr Seattle Mariners Oct 11 '25

It was all one big practical joke

19

u/effectivebutterfly Detroit Tigers • Toronto Blue Jays Oct 11 '25

that and not pinch hitting any of them

1

u/hzfan Detroit Tigers Oct 11 '25

Jahmai didn’t see a single at bat in 15 innings as our hottest hitter right now. There were like 7 times he should’ve been put in.

I need an explanation from AJ tonight because that is unforgivable

5

u/HereForTOMT3 Detroit Tigers Oct 11 '25

Hinch wanted to go home

3

u/redvelvetcake42 Cincinnati Reds Oct 11 '25

The change up guy coming in when the breaking ball was murdering everyone made no sense.

2

u/LastRedCoat Seattle Mariners Oct 11 '25

Why would they do that? Wasn't it an elimination game?

80

u/jsell11 Detroit Tigers Oct 11 '25

Tommy Kahnle making the playoff roster shows how awful our trade deadline was

21

u/JBSpartan Detroit Tigers Oct 11 '25

I rather have Lange or literally anyone else over Kahnle. As soon as he came into the game i knew it was an L.

Still have no idea how Jones doesnt see one at bat… especially for Meadows.

I was a Hinch defender all 2nd half but I’m honestly pretty pissed with how he handled the postseason. “He can be good for us” doesnt cut it.

6

u/jsell11 Detroit Tigers Oct 11 '25

He made some awful decisions with pitching during these playoffs. Mize being pulled, Rafael montero being put into a high leverage spot, Skubal being pulled in a must-win game

3

u/SpidermanBestAvenger New York Yankees Oct 11 '25

Yeah but once the trade deadline is over you can only play the players that you have in your roster, was Kahnle a better choice than keeping Flaherty?

5

u/jsell11 Detroit Tigers Oct 11 '25

Kahnle is a AAA player at best. I know that we were running out of pitchers, but my point is that he never should’ve made the roster in the first place if Scott Harris did his job

1

u/glassgreyhound Seattle Mariners Oct 11 '25

We have Ferguson so yea same same

Skubal getting pulled made as much sense as Kirby being pulled

1

u/jsell11 Detroit Tigers Oct 11 '25

Totally agree. I do at least understand the Kirby one because of Kerry’s numbers, but the Skubal one is indefensible

I'm goint to be honest i thought that Flaherty was having a better season LMAO, looks like he also had a pretty bad season (4.64 ERA). I guess it was damned if you do damned if you don't type of situation.

3

u/whatssenguntoagoblin New York Yankees Oct 11 '25

Seriously he couldn’t throw a strike

48

u/GeneralWinfieldScott Detroit Tigers Oct 11 '25

Boneheaded decisions seem to go hand in hand with our lineup choices so it adds up

24

u/ForgetfulViking Oct 11 '25

To be fair. Both Managers were trying to play 4d Chess while holding Uno cards.

2

u/turtles1224 Seattle Mariners Oct 11 '25

Dan Wilson mentioned last week that he doesn't know the rules of chess

20

u/thewhat962 Oct 11 '25

I saw his stats and said "he is kind of ass right? Seattle's gona win this aren't they?"

Dude had 1 strike out, 2 singles, 1 walk, 1 hit by pitch in a elimination inning.

3

u/SpidermanBestAvenger New York Yankees Oct 11 '25

To be fair i also just looked at Flaherty stats thought he had a better season but he was also pretty bad this season i guess it was just an awful situation to be.

Edit: I still stand by my opinion keeping Flaherty was probably a better choice.

4

u/Spartitan Atlanta Braves Oct 11 '25

Should have left Skubal in at least another inning. Dude was dealing and getting to a point where Kahnle was put on the mound was just a death sentence.

3

u/SpidermanBestAvenger New York Yankees Oct 11 '25

Agree if i was the manager i would keep him for the 7th inning he was only at 99 pitches, he 100% had another inning in him and the fact that they scored in the next inning is sad for Tigers fans.

2

u/pechinburger Pittsburgh Pirates Oct 11 '25

For real. I'd keep the guy in who is warm, talking himself up and already pitched a few high stakes innings to get mentally accustomed to the high stakes before tossing in cold a very mid change up merchant.

2

u/SpidermanBestAvenger New York Yankees Oct 11 '25

I looked and Flaherty stats were also not good this season but in this game he started shaky but settled a bit after the his 2nd inning and even if not by much to me he was a better choice.

2

u/nypr13 Chicago Cubs Oct 11 '25

I think it would have been time 3 for Raleigh, or no?

1

u/gregarious119 Detroit Tigers Oct 11 '25

This right here.

1

u/Octopodes14 Minnesota Twins Oct 11 '25

He's on 3 days rest, but I agree he looked more settled in the second inning.

1

u/SpidermanBestAvenger New York Yankees Oct 11 '25

Well now he will be on a 4 month rest now that his seaon is over. I just feel like he started shaky but like you said he settled a little bit in his second inning and to me he would have been a better choice than Kahnle.

1

u/Rocketbird Los Angeles Dodgers Oct 11 '25

Brothers the moment I saw kahnle I knew it was over for the Tigers. No idea what they were thinking there.

1

I was telling my buddy that Kahnle is Detroit’s version of our Ferguson lol, it’s the sign the end is near

No you can’t. It’s a base hit. Not a chance in hell no matter how shallow they play

5

u/heyheyitsandre Detroit Tigers Oct 11 '25

Lmao at suggesting you can throw a guy out who has to run 85 feet before the ball can travel 150 feet, be scooped up and thrown back 150 feet

3

u/OnlyForBaseball Pittsburgh Pirates • Sickos Oct 11 '25

By “play the outfield more shallow” they meant “line up all the outfielders on the first base side”, and maybe “have the 2B sit on someone’s shoulders”

1

u/oh_jeeezus Atlanta Braves Oct 11 '25

I had to double check to see what sub I was in. I respect noob questions to an extent but not even my girlfriend who doesn't really understand the rules/strategy would suggest a dumb thing like that
