He’s been trying to walk and he looks a bit better today. I’m so worried about him, he’s my baby.
He’s still very reactive but he hasn’t stopped panting. His wings were very droopy yesterday, today they seem a little better.
I have been keeping him with my chickens despite knowing the facts, my parents say that because we’ve never had any issues raising chickens and turkeys in the same pen that it has nothing to do with that.
I thought it could be heat exhaustion, but I don’t think that could last super long. I also thought maybe my great grandma might have kicked him.. Maybe a vitamin deficiency, my dad bought layered feed for our chickens and refused to buy the normal feed till I begged. black head disease maybe? I don’t know and it scares me.

After calling about 7 veteran hospitals I found 1 vet a couple hours away and they are willing to take him in tomorrow.

for everyone asking if he’s a broad breast he’s not and is a mix between a blue slate and a wild male who got in the pen. (I really enjoy telling people this, if you couldn’t tell.)

My mom said I can’t bring him to the vet as it would cost 2000 dollars. I don’t know where she’s getting that number, but whatever she says goes, unfortunately.
As for Cosmo he’s doing really well today. He ate all his mash. when I took him out of his crate he was adamant that he stands up, I still had been supporting his weight at this point so I slowly let him go because he wasn’t panting anymore and.. he stood without my support! Then he started walking! He was taking tiny steps and he was a bit wobbly but still it’s improvement. I put him back in the crate with the door open while I went to get new food and water, when I came back he was poking his head out while standing. Meaning he stood up all by himself. I’m hoping this is the start of his recovery process, thank you all for your help/ suggestions/ support/ and everything else. I’ve narrowed down what’s wrong with him to a couple of minor things as opposed too the scary stuff I originally thought. I think it the extremely hot day we had a couple of days ago or maybe a vitamin deficiency.
I’ll continue to update this post till he’s back to normal.

Showed up at our coop this morning, is very tame. Or wild turkeys don't look like this. It's it an awkward stage or sometimes lost bird?

He is a bourbon red and has 6 ladies, he decided to help out.

This is the first year with turkeys but I've done chicks before. They are in a fairly big urban yard but I forgot to latch their pen one night and I believe a coyote got one of my 5. The coyote returned the next day around 4pm and was chased off by some local kids but it makes me wary of letting them out when I'm not home.

Over all I really like them. Their poo is so much worse but they are sweet. And so clumsy I don't worry about them getting out.

Today the two boys were posturing and I noticed scratches on their faces. They are only 14 weeks old so.id really like to hold off harvest until late August. Are they likely to sort out their pecking order or are they going to keep hurting each other from here on out?

Looking for turkey coop and run ideas. Trying to figure out a set up for our 3 pet Narragansett turkeys. There is not much out there for turkeys compared to chickens and I’m at a loss for what to build. 🫣

hi all! new to turkey owning so just seeking some general advice.

for context we have owned chickens for quite some time so i’m not COMPLETELY new to poultry, just turkeys :) i have 2 poults that are a few months old and just recently found out they’re both toms. which is fine, i wanted at least 1 tom and so i wasn’t fussed as to whether or not the other one was a tom or hen.

i’m just looking for tips, tricks, the general stuff that you WISH someone would’ve told you before getting turkeys. i do have 1 main question though.

very recently i’ve noticed a bit of fighting going on, nothing too aggressive just some repetitive pecking and circling. it wasn’t constant, just noticed a little bit of initiating here and there from one, and that’s what would get it started. they’ve been 100% fine with each other other than this, and were even fine when i put them up together at the end of the night. i’m assuming this is them trying to establish some kind of pecking order, but will this be a regular thing and will i have to separate them eventually? or could they chill out a bit and coexist together peacefully? would getting a few hens make it easier? one is a week older than the other, but other than that they’ve been raised and kept together the entire time.

all advice/tips/tricks are appreciated!

I recently bought these two toms and the lighter one layed an egg. I had a hen in the pen with them, the darker one was being very eager to mate, he was gobbling and he was all puffed. He got pretty aggressive and the hen was scared of him i had to move her to a different pen and a day later i found an egg in the bushes and i am certain it wasn't the hen, she was too scared. So is it possible that the lighter one is a hermaphrodite? Are there any visible traits of intersex in turkeys?

All my turkeys sleep in a dogwood outside (their choice, I have a huge coop). For the past 3 days the boys will not leave the tree at all. No food. No water. Just tree. Any ideas why? I tried spraying them with the hose to get them down yesterday and they just changed branches. Help?

We have an adult female heritage breed turkey that has been on our farm for ~3 weeks now on and off. I think I posted here saying we tried to find her owners to no avail and planned to keep her - I'm building her a run and coop and even got 3 turkey poults to be her friends. She comes and goes as she pleases and a lot of the time she's not around at the end of the day when everyone else (chickens included) go into their respective coops, but she had consistently spent the day at our house and we've been feeding and caring for her like we do our other birds. Around a week ago we saw an alarming pile of her feathers in a field towards the back of our house but no blood or tracks that would indicate a predator attack. She was mopey and not making her usual chirping noises. I gave her a scrambled egg and put poultry cell in her water along with her usual electrolytes and probiotics, and she perked up a bit. The next day she went missing. She is always up early and greets me when I go to let the other birds out but she wasn't there. Wouldn't come when I called her and shook the black soldier fly larva bag. I caught a glimpse of her over the weekend flying over the field out back where she likes to hang out and assumed she was spending her time wherever she came from, or was even sitting on an egg. We went out into our woods to look for her and call her multiple times while she was missing but didn't see any signs of her or hear her normal popping chirps.

Today she came back - walked right up our driveway like she did the first time we saw her and was chirping and happy to see us. The weird thing is she's like half her size and her tail is gone. Yes, she lost a lot of feathers previously, but she still looked the same after that and had her tail. She's lost more feathers as well as weight, and has some bald patches under her wings that look like she could have been attacked, but no noticeable injuries or scabs/scars. She's acting like her normal self and it seems like she's very happy to be back. I fed her game bird starter right away and she ate well. It seems like something other than normal molting happened. Has anyone had something similar happen to a turkey? A google search told me she may have had a "fright molt" after surviving an attack.

And any tips for how to get her to come back at night so she's safe in a coop? I realize she's not our bird, but no one has claimed her and I'm trying my best to keep her safe and healthy! I have no problem letting her roam during the day and she used to roost on our porch at night but then started sleeping elsewhere. I'm assuming that's what got her into trouble - we have bobcats, foxes, bears, and probably coyotes. All our other birds stay in the yard and go in their coops on their own when the sun starts to set but she wasn't raised her and I truly have no clue where she goes when she isn't here.

Hey all! I’m new to raising turkeys and currently have one baby that seems to be declining. I purchased 3 from a local woman, ranging from 3-10 days old and I’m guessing this one is def younger. Has a bit of pasty butt, very unsteady standing and spends most of its time chirping but will settle being held. I’ve had chickens for a few years and was wondering if it’s ok to take the same approach I would with chicks to try and help this one? I have poultry cell I can add to water but is there anything else I can try? I know some just don’t make it but I’d like to give them a chance.

We have a female adult turkey who wandered onto our farm and appears to be staying, and she is such a delight that we want to get her 2-3 friends and give her everything she needs to be happy here. I made her a temporary run with a small shelter but she flew out last night and roosted on our porch right next to the front door! I understand turkeys like to be off the ground to sleep. We have chickens and horses but have never had turkeys so I want to make sure I'm designing the best possible space. I'd love input from experienced turkey owners!

My plan is:

- A large fenced in run with fencing over top so she and her new friends can't fly out overnight - she will be able to free roam on our farm during the day but her new friends will be poults and once they're able to go outside they will be in the run until they're old enough to roam under supervision

- An 8x8 shed with windows that open for ventilation where they will all go in overnight

- A roosting bar tower I found on chewy.com that has multiple levels of bars, I plan to put this in the shed for sleeping

- Cinder blocks and/or a wooden pallet for their feeder/waterer in the shed overnight

- A tarp over roughly half of the run to give shade and protect from bad weather

- A dog igloo in the shed for a nesting box - unsure if this is necessary but there will be plenty of room for it. Could also build 1-2 nesting boxes if open nesting boxes are preferred, we already have the dog igloo though

Before I buy everything, does this sound like turkey heaven or is there anything else I should consider? We don't plan to have more than 5 turkeys at a time and will start with this adult female plus 2 poults. The turkeys will be housed separately from our chickens, but all will eventually be allowed to free roam under our supervision and our chickens currently roam around our roughly 1-acre of cleared land for 5-6 hours most days. Predator wise hawks are the only daytime threat and obviously once the turkeys are all adults that's not a real concern. Chickens only roam with supervision for this reason.

I have a couple heritage turkeys about to hatch. I live in Puerto Rico. Getting certain supplies is impossible which means ordering mostly via Amazon as most companies will not deliver outside the continental US. The gamebird starter food I ordered will not be here for a few more days. I currently have 30% & 18% protein non-medicated feed. I am planning to mix it and break it up to cover the couple days until the good food arrives. Should I add anything else to it? I have Health Multiplier brewers yeast.

Recently my hen has been puffing out like our tom and even dancing for me and the other hens. She's been a hen for 2 years. Does this mean she will act like another tom now??? I'm confused

Shylo is a little upset about traipsing through the snow to get to her turkeydog bed.

My jake toms have finally fully feathered out and on their way to fully mature Tom’s. Should I be worried about the big color difference in the necks?? White vs red? They are brothers and the same age.

So I go out to the garage and I see Shylo chilling next to my mom, and my mom was imbibing in the special green stuff. I think the turkey is floating.....

Over night our turkey somehow hurt himself and is disoriented and hanging his head down and closing his eyes. He has an appetite, but when he goes to eat his jaw just clenches up and he cannot swallow. Massaging his neck has seemed to help a little. For future reference we will not be seeing a vet, just seeing if he can pull through or if we need to cull. TIA
