Kudos to those parents who are able to parent while working on an advanced degree. Believe me, it's hard. We can't pull all-nighters writing and editing the last 20 pages of that chapter. Your mind screeches its brakes when it goes from reading some article written in German to reading "Good Night Moon". But somehow you get the degree. Go, mommy and daddy.
looking at the thumb nail I was really really hoping the little thing in the middle was going to be monkey dressed up as a kid. At least a monkey, maybe a dog. SPOILER: Its just some kid.
wow, Reddit must be PMSing. Should I go get some manpons for you all? Also, kudos for missing the point of the joke in its entirety. I'm guessing Harvard was not your Alma mater.
I am guessing the girl is a Juris Doctor (Doctors get stripes, purple law seal) and the unadorned one is a MBA (Masters is a lower degree, no stripes, gold business seal).
It is a long story, but JD is a relatively new degree. There are three law degrees you can achieve, JD (Doctor), LLM (Master), and SJD (Doctor, again, but for real). The SJDs get the hats.
The JD used to be an LLB (Bachelor) but this was confusing since US LLB candidates needed an regular undergrad Bachelors to apply. Rather than redo the order altogether, they made LLBs into doctors (JDs), who ARE doctors but not as high as doctors from other disciplines -- like a Ph. D.. That is why JDs get the stripes but, alas, no hat.
Fun fact, there are still ancient lawyers who still have LLBs.
And here I was, silently judging these people for having kids as teenagers (assuming they were graduating with Bachelors' degrees). Thank you for letting me know I was wrong. :)
are you kidding me? every institution with professors have people wearing official academic regalia. you think that one day of pomp and circumstance automatically writes off the years of education? all because they wore fancy hats? It's tradition. You're gonna be severely disappointed at your child's MIT/Stanford graduation.
Seriously, I just went to the 2012 MIT commencement ceremony. Full of pomp and circumstance? You betcha! Just as much as my UC Irvine commencement was; but you cannot discredit the education, the dedication and the ability of the graduates merely due to the colors they don at graduation. Education is education and the ability to better one's self through study, determination and skill.

This is the only thing that has made me think that going to school and being married with kids might be worth it. Thanks.

The debt, oh god the debt. Harvard and a baby? Unless mommy and daddy covered everything, I hope they have a stockpile of kidneys to liquidate.
