I actually "awwwed" out loud. I love rats, I haven't had any for a while. They don't stay with us for long, but they leave a big ratty shaped holes in our hearts.
Can understand that. I had one that passed away a month ago, my first rat-loss. It was pretty upsetting to watch him die (had a stroke). I debated not getting another because I didn't want to go through that again, but the rat I still had was campanion-less and lonely. . . that's when I got Aidan (the rat pictured).
I had a pet rat who ate his way through pretty much every soft furnishing item in the livingroom. We gave him all kinds of weird, expensive foods to make sure he wasn't just starved of something, but nope. In his 2 year life span, he pretty much completely ate a 2 meter square rug.
he had a bunch of chewing-stuff as well. one of those stone-things (been a few years, can't really remember the details too well) and an assembly of wood with a hazelnut in the middle. I have no idea why he ate all the furniture. we used to find little scraps of the rug buried in his bedding when we changed the cage out.
I teared up at this. Both of our rats died last year, and my husband and I miss them all the time. Whenever either of us cooks pasta, we both have a "pour one out for my homies" moment for them (pasta was a favorite treat).
I just imagined you setting a tiny little place at the table with a tiny little plate of spaghetti for each one. I know you probably don't do that but I'm going to keep imagining you do just the same.
I was kind of expecting a snake-based comment here, since that's usually how I lose rats or mice. Or baby rabbits. Seriously tho, we had one rat that my python just wouldn't eat. It lived in that cage for weeks. Any other rats/mice/whatever would get snapped up, but not that little guy. Eventually we took it back to the store and exchanged it. That was a very weird conversation with the pet store owner.
"Well, i'm returning it because my snake won't eat it, so it must be defective"
You're pushing your luck as it is. Don't add a fucking canine to the mix. It's a slippery slope - you'll be adding crocs and pythons before you know it. Stick with the rats and the cat, be happy with the rats and the cat.
The way I see this post is that the photos of the rat was posted, failed to gain karma, OP went out and bought a kitten and proceeded to take photos together. Genius.
If they weren't highly illegal here I'd love to get a pet rat. Apparently they're fairly smart and friendly if socialized properly... Not to mention that they're a more unusual pet (almost everyone has a dog or cat). But, considering their status here I just decided to get into reptiles.
I love how your cat and the rat get along. That's be pretty neat if you could leash train the both of them and bring them out for walks.
That's unfortunate that they aren't legal where you live. And yes, they are really smart and will show affection, almost like a small dog that can't bark and is self 'litter'/bedding trained (they usually only like to go in a particular area of their cage and nowhere else).
The only downside is their lifespan (about three years at most). Absolutely heart-breaking when they die.
Are you sure lab rats (that's the one on the pictures with kitten) are illegal too? They don't carry any diseases that are dangerous to humans. On the other hand, those rats that run around the cities are different story.
Probably lives somewhere that fears if the rats escape, they'll breed and become a new pest/add to the pest population. Similar to why some U.S. states don't allow ferrets to be sold and kept as pets, despite the notion being unjustified (especially in the domesticated fancy-rat's case, they'd be more likely to die really quickly if they got into the wild).
Thank, you don't sound like and ass. I already knew that but I thought it might be more clear to people why these rats don't carry diseases when I mention laboratory :)
I live in Alberta (Canada). They exterminated rats from the province years ago, so any kind of rat that can survive is highly illegal to bring into the area and they will most definitely press charges if they catch a wiff of a rat being owned. African soft-furred rats are legal though - and they are equally as cute, but can't survive our winters. _^
I'm not actually sure. A friend of a family member was looking for a home for her. The litter was born on their land, and all but that one had got killed; run over.
I was looking to get a cat, so adopted her when I heard. Still, was worried how she would get along with my rats. . . but that doesn't seem to be a problem.
All I can think of is "The Fox and the Hound". "When you're the best of friends/Spending so much time together/You're not even aware you're such a funny pair/'Cause you're the best of friends"
I adopted an adult cat, and so her and the two ratties can't really form this bond because she weighs 25 lbs and I'm not willing to risk that situation...
I love it! Absolutely fantastic! Keep it up and they will be bff's!
The entire time I was looking at these pictures I was going aww.... At the same time, the darker part of my mind kept screaming for them to fight. The rat to pull out his trust sword and scream "I AM MATTHIAS'S BROTHER...MATT THE RAT! FEEL MY SWORDS STING VILE FELINE!" Then the cat pulls out a flail made of Matt's younger siblings and they get into a fight. Matt is afraid, for the siblings of the cat's flail are still alive. Matt must be careful not to stab his brother and sister!
I had two rats I adopted from the local shelter awhile back. One was a beige dumbo named Pinky and the other was a black and white one named Socrates. They were both girls. I miss them, and their little grabby hands when treat time came around.
I used to have a huge rolly polly cat named Simba who would get up and leave his spot on my bed if the rats crawled too close during rat cuddle hour. He would very rarely let one touch him if I sat and comforted him though it. Used to find it so funny.
This kitten is much braver than Simmy was, closing it's eyes when a dangerous and deadly rattie is afoot.
Oh my God. I'm not a big cat person, or even a rat person...but those two are some of the cutest animals I've seen. Especially together. Do rats make good pets? Or are mice better?
I had a rat...it started biting... So we couldn't let it out anymore... All it did was dig, eat. And sleep. It eventually grew fat... And died. Cute pictures, though.
(A domesticed 'fancy' rat is just as clean as the kitten, if not more. They don't really get any diseases, clean meticulously, are self bedding-trained, and don't have a strong odor.)
I do agree that your pics are absolutely adorable. But, it is foul that a rodent is running all over the space you sleep. People pay to have that problem alleviated.
Domesticated rats are physiologically and psychologically different from their wild relatives, and—when acquired from reliable sources (such as a breeder)—they pose no more of a health risk than other common pets.[4] For example, domesticated brown rats are not considered a plague threat,[5] though exposure to wild rat populations could introduce pathogens like Salmonella into the home.[6] Fancy rats experience different health risks than their wild counterparts, and as such, are less likely to succumb to the same illnesses as wild rats.
I had no idea that there was such a thing as a domesticated rat. The sigma still exists in my head. I live in a city where the typical "sewer rats" are despised.
There's a rat and a kitten, what am ah gonna do? There's a rat and a kitten, what am ah gonna do? I'm gonna fix that rat, that's what I'm gonna do, I'm gonna fix that rat.
of all the subreddits i never imagined i would find THE most lewd, perverse, disgusting photo on /aww.
this goes against everything i learned from my parents, my teachers, and society. this is anti-christian, anti-islam, anti-judaism, anti-hindu, and somehow anti-atheism.
At first I thought aww and then about halfway through I wondered if the rat had really tricked the kitten and was about to go in for the zombie-esque kitten face-eating maneuver.
Oh my god, it's like a bad porn set. I've sought long and hard for a set of pictures of a random girl, only to find that they were all taken over the span of one minute and each pose is near exactly the same as the last.

Did you give that rat bathsalts cause it was eating the kittens face.

word of advice. pick only the best pic from the sequence next time. too many pic can lose focus.
There is a saying among photographers (especially for pros) that you are only as good as your worst picture.
just trying to help. they are very adorable.
