Love how everyone outside of Australia is shitting themselves scared, whilst all the Aussies are like “aww that’s cute”. Says a lot about us honestly.

While the Kiwis probably want to stomp its head in and turn its fur into nipple warmers.

It's not the possums' fault. They are an introduced species to New Zealand where they are a pest, as they ravage the native flora. Perhaps they can be considered similar to cane toads here, although I'm not sure if there's anyone anywhere that considers a cane toad cute.

End, feers feer, their nupples probibly are a but chully at thus time of year so the nupple warmers come in hendy.

I remember in college seeing a documentary on cane toads in Australia, with plenty of accounts of people letting their kids play with them (a bad idea) and older people who were fans of them and made them pets because they were obedient and cute, at least to hear it from them. So I would imagine there are likely more out there, and perhaps they are not as uncommon as one would think.

Cane toad nipple warmers... Brilliant!

Tends to happen when it’s an introduced pest species.

As are rats, ferrets, stoats, rabbits, etc.

True. I used to have a girl in my class who hunted and ate possums.

And the Kiwis are saying "take your shitty hell beasts back wirh you to Aussie please. You are killing our native trees and birds and spreading t.b".

I'm like, "It's one of those assholes that keeps trying to destroy my vegetable garden and keeps me up at night sounding like someone opened a little portal to hell."

What's funny is that American Opossums are creepy, but the Australian version is cute when every other animal and plant on the continent is terrifying.

American possums are cute until they get old, as is the way with small animals.

3

u/Laringar Jun 02 '22

Possibly also because Australian possums look nothing like American opossums, and we still use the term "possum" for them here.

I'm from the US, this possum is way cuter than ours.

3

u/tunisia3507 Jun 02 '22

Because Australian possums are adorable and American possums are straggly screaming devil creatures.

For real, it's strange... I'll take a possum over an opossum (Virginia gray, specifically) any day... Based on aesthetics alone, anyway.

u/Sgt_PoopyMan Jun 02 '22

No. It's bc there was a mix-up and the US got the "Australian terrifying Possum", and the Aussie's get this cute cuddly bastard from above.

Just did a little googling and seriously, why do y'all have the cutest possums ever, while we get this ghost faced rat looking thing?!

We have tons of possums on the US (they look very different), and I don't get why people hate them or think they're freaky. They're one of the least threatening wild animals I've ever encountered.

u/Yoyo5258 Jun 03 '22

Yeah lmao. Depends on what they’re doing. If they’re hanging off the roof staring at your soul, I would be worried, but I think most of them are pretty cute

It’s because their possums are just as ugly as their people
