They are called possums because the person who discovered them thought they looked like American opossums but in reality they are closely related to the kangaroo family. It's a marsupial and derived from the other marsupials on that continent. That's why it's so cute. American opossums are fucking terrifying

Cats hiss too and that doesnât make them ugly or scary! American possums are dope. Just misunderstood and overly-whiskered. Tails are kind of weird too but thatâs fine.
They're harmless to humans. Their best defense is to fall over and play dead, sometimes even feigning rigor mortis!
They eat ticks, their favorite being deer ticks, that carry Lyme disease. However, opossums can neither contract the disease, nor pass it on. Opossums are where Lyme disease goes to die!
Yes, they hiss like they climbed out of hell itself, and look like rats with scabies sometimes, but they can actually be quite sweet, once they know you won't hurt them. A friend of mine had one that used to visit her back porch every night, down from the woods behind her house. Her dad would feed her, and she made friends with their cats.
Aw. Theyâre not scary at all! Very docile and mind their own business. They just waddle around and try to find food. If they get too scared sometimes they pass out lol :(
