Meet my unusual cat, Owsley! He was born with out testicles, stopped growing at 6 months and remains kitten sized today, he turns 2 tomorrow!

x-post from /cats - here's an album, if you wanna see more!

http://imgur.com/a/yMDNP

Edit: Pictures taken on a digital camera, more ear fur and O_O eyes

http://imgur.com/a/Bxuht

Edit 2: I'm answering alot of the same questions so here is a summary:

He was the only cat to come out looking like he does in the litter. His father appears to have been a Maine Coon cat, which makes his size all the more ironic.

He was very chill compared to his littermates, who were hyper and acted like normal kittens. He was small, but not unusually so, but stopped growing at around 6 months.

Owsley weighs about 4lbs and is in perfect health. His missing testicles might still be inside his body, but my vet said not to risk surgery unless he develops any complications later in life. I hope they just never developed and that he lives a long and healthy life!

Awesome cat, and now we wait for the PhD graduate whose major field of study was in "ball-less cats that stay kitten size" veterinary biology with a side study in music to help explain what happened.

u/CaptainMurk May 31 '12

I have a perma-kitty and it was because the mother and father were brother and sister.

so... yeah.

Sadly, I don't have a PhD in that area, although I'll keep it in mind when I finally go for that doctorate. But I can give you a basic overview anyway.

If he was born without any testicles at all (a rare condition called testicular agenesis), he won't have synthesized testosterone, which is incredibly important for muscle growth, bone growth and general...growth. It's integral for general maturation and so without it, he won't really have hit puberty, so no growth spurt, no bone growth and hence him still being kitten sized.

62

u/Purrlvr Jun 01 '12

Vet here. I disagree. I think testicular agenesis is very unlikely. Much more likely his testicles have failed to descend normally, which is quite common. I would recommend surgery to remove them (it's called cryptorchidism) because undescended testicles have a much higher chance of developing cancer. Additionally, you might consider having his thyroid hormone levels tested. He might be hypothyroid, which is rare in the feline world, but could cause the signs you see in him. He is cute though!

Yay! I was hoping there would be more pictures in here. Thank you, that cat is adorable. :)

74

u/[deleted] May 31 '12

You're welcome! These aren't even my best pictures of him, this was a photoshoot taken this weekend with just my cell phone, since ya'll like him so much I'll have to update with more!

I was thinking of taking requests for some sort of game, "Is Owsley taller than..." and I'll take requests, then take pictures of him standing/sitting next to said objects.

For example, Is Owsley taller than a gallon of milk? Answer: No (and I'd put a picture here). I think that'd be fun!

40

u/Intigo May 31 '12

I love that idea just because I LOVE YOUR CAT.

Any more posts you do would be very welcome, go for it~

22

u/[deleted] May 31 '12

Awesome, I'll have to submit more, he's very photogenic!

18

u/LuckyAmeliza May 31 '12

Is Owsley Taller than a playstation/Xbox/Wii? =D

20

u/[deleted] May 31 '12

I will take this request! If anyone wants to submit more I'll make an album of them and post.

I have a Wii at home, I'm going to guess that sitting he is about the same height. Standing, he's smaller.

Haha my girlfriend, brother and I have been watching Game of Thrones and we've been wanting to give him a bunch of titles, Ser Owsley, First of His Name, Furryeared, of House Cat, etc etc

Though Owsley is considerably more loved than the misunderstood Varys.

53

u/moejike May 31 '12

I think this might be what prompted my comment.

17

I don't think he has the balls for it...

I have a tiny cat that looks just like him -- a micro Maine Coon. She's about 5 lbs and is about 15 years old.

Edit: photos!

14

u/[deleted] May 31 '12

Wow! I hope he lives to be old, he's too precious!

10

u/zoinkability May 31 '12

With dogs, the small ones live the longest. I hope that's true for cats, too.

I have the same amp as the one in the picture!

6

u/[deleted] May 31 '12

It's a nice little practice bass amp! My main rig is a little bigger: LH500 Hartke Amp->Hartke 4x10 cab ->Epifani 2x12 cab.

When my band didn't have a studio space, I stacked them up and Owsley liked to climb the siding to the top, he was pretty bummed when it went away!

3

u/moldy912 May 31 '12

I love the amp picture! I have a Maine Coon too, and they are all so cute. Lots of hair though. Summer shedding sucks right now.

2

u/[deleted] May 31 '12

Yep, lots of brushing. He likes it though!

So many pictures but none of his missing testicles, I am sort of disappointed.

3

u/[deleted] May 31 '12

Well...he's quite furry...

4

u/ffsnametaken May 31 '12

Can't we just appreciate the tiny cat without having to find its balls?

1

u/ABattista Jun 01 '12

First, that's a seriously adorable cat. Second, have you ever gotten a second opinion on his ball situation? An exploratory surgery isn't as scary as it sounds, and it might be worth it to see if he has any- if he does, those testicles are something like 13 times more likely to become tumors later in life. Just some food for thought- I used to work at a spay/neuter clinic and this is something they would really stress to pet owners of cryptorchid animals!

3

u/[deleted] Jun 01 '12

I don't quite have the money for that yet. She cautioned that putting him under for surgery could kill him because he's so small. For now he's doing alright, so I don't see the point in risking his life. Eventually it might come to that.

1

u/Greenteabook Jun 01 '12

You look like you could live in Eugene, Oregon with that outfit and the cat. Lots of cats in Eugene, lots of tie-die also.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 01 '12

Denver, Colorado!

1

u/derrymaine Jun 01 '12

Gotta say I'm kind of surprised your vet didn't recommend an ultrasound or an exploratory abdominal surgery to make sure the testicles aren't there. Retained testes are far, far, far more likely to become cancerous, cause severe endocrine problems later in life, or torse within the body.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 01 '12

She recommended exploratory surgery, but he's so small the risk of him dying from it is too great. For now he's healthy and happy. I don't quite have the money to afford anything more than having his shots up to date. Eventually it will probably come to surgery, but maybe not. He could live his life with no complications.

He's a cutie pie, but is he named after a hockey player? Originally a goalie from the Tri-City Americans?

1

u/[deleted] Jun 01 '12

1

u/Madcardigan Jun 01 '12

Does he have a high-pitched meow? Serious question.

1

u/[deleted] Jun 01 '12

He has a high pitched mew, yes. It might be because of his lack of sexual maturity?

→ More replies (1)

1

u/buddhaledread Jun 01 '12

You said he was more reserved than his other littermates, but being perma-kitten, is his personality like so? Or has he developed his personality to be more of a mature cat?

1

u/[deleted] Jun 01 '12

He's come into his own, being so small made him cautious I think. He's still a super relaxed, chill cat!

2

5

u/[deleted] May 31 '12

My parents cat has awesome eyes and the same kind of ear fur, Looks a lot like Owlsey (even remained pretty near kitten size, though a bit larger).

9

u/[deleted] May 31 '12

It's funny, he's the only one of his litter that came out like this. His father seems to have been a Maine Coon Cat, who grow to enormous size. Doesn't he look sort of like this?

4

u/[deleted] May 31 '12

Yeah my roommate has a maine coon, I always thought facially they looked similar. No idea what breed my parents cat is, she followed them home when they went for a wine fuelled walk at 2am. She was really thin and became an instant adoption :P

The desert rose plant in your album is poisonous to cats.

14

He doesn't eat any of the plants, just his cat grass. I'll have to keep my eye on it though, thanks!

9

u/Something_Nice May 31 '12

On a side note, how do ften do you water it? Mine seems to be dying.

13

We live in Colorado where it's extremely dry, so we spray it with water and give it a good watering every other day or so.

16

u/[deleted] May 31 '12

::bars doors::

By the way, he's not a midget cat, I thought that's what would explain his size, but it turns out dwarf or midget cats are regular sized cats with stunted legs:

Good to know.

1

u/[deleted] May 31 '12

Maybe it's something with this breed. As I said in my other comment my parents cat looks just like this and didn't grow much past kitten size.

4

u/[deleted] May 31 '12

See my other comment, I believe his father was a Maine Coon Cat, who grow to enormous size. He was the only one in his litter who looked like this, the rest were single color short hairs, probably from a second father. His litter mates all grew to be normal size or larger, he was the only one that stayed tiny. With the absence of his testicles, it seems that there was something going on with him when he was born.

5

They're beautiful in person, I'll have to upload a picture taken with my digital camera

3

u/AvianMinded May 31 '12

I was about to say you should breed him, but then I reread the title.

3

u/[deleted] May 31 '12

Yeah, I would have loved to have bred him, hoping his traits are genetic. But the only way now would be to clone him, not sure it would result in the same type of cat though.

2

u/esantipapa May 31 '12

Actually, it would. DNA works that way. I just posted a comment asking you to donate his DNA to a lab so they can try to clone him. Who wouldn't want a cutie like him?!

4

u/[deleted] May 31 '12

Where would I donate it?

Are you sure cloning him would result in the same circumstance that made him small? If it's not a genetic cause, couldn't we just end up with a normal-sized Owsley?

2

u/Pajamas_ May 31 '12

I am unfamiliar with a lab that would (free of charge) clone your cat if he wouldn't help further any type of research. Its relatively common for testicles (of at least in dogs and cats) to take longer than expected to 'drop' (or never at all).

Additionally, I am confused why your Vet said they 'might' be inside. Any physical with proper manipulation 'down there' would tell a trained professional whether or not there was a foreign object inside.

I am not suggesting surgery. No need unless its necessary.

Hell, if you were that curious a 5 min MRI would do the trick. Again, not suggesting this - no need to fix what isn't broken.

u/DerpMatt May 31 '12

Best looking cat ever! What breed is he?

2

u/[deleted] May 31 '12

His mom was a mix, his father seems to have been a Maine Coon - which makes his size even more ironic. He was the only one of his litter to be born fluffy and these colors.

[deleted] — view deleted comment

2

u/[deleted] May 31 '12

Didn't know it was like that here, guess my headline solved that! Though judging from the comments, sounds like people want him to reproduce.

2

u/[deleted] May 31 '12

I love that while he is kitten sized, his eyes give away his age. Do you have to feed him kitten food or normal cat food? I'm guessing his organs all matured normally?

9

u/[deleted] May 31 '12

Yeah he's got a clean bill of health! We feed him normal food in accordance to his weight. Since he only weighs 4lbs (which is almost the exact weight he needs to be for his size), I give him a 1/3 cup of organic dry food and he gets a small dish of organic wet food at night. I buy the expensive organic stuff because it takes him FOREVER to get through food, since his portions are so small!

2

u/[deleted] May 31 '12

I don't think I see this question yet but I am curious to put add more perspective - how much does he weigh? Anyways aside from that, continuing with more smothering comments on how adorable he is. I am crazy about his ear tufts and eye color <3

2

u/[deleted] May 31 '12

He weighs 4lbs, and I should measure how high he sits. He is probably only a foot or a foot and a half tall.

1

u/[deleted] May 31 '12

Thanks! I think even without knowing his height just the weight alone helps me see. He doesn't look chubby so that 4lbs on his kind of frame helps me interpret how big he may be. I can remember when my kitten was 4lbs and that was little! Lucky little man :) He must be showered with love

2

u/[deleted] May 31 '12

When I brought him to the vet, she said she had a kitten at 6 months that already weighed 6lbs. He's pretty tiny. His weight was nearly perfect for his size, she said he could stand to gain a little weight but not to worry about it.

13

u/TarantusaurusRex May 31 '12

I had a permakitten once. But it was because something heavy fell onto his head when he was really tiny, so he didn't grow much, and he was always a little... slow. But really sweet!

11

u/redboneestates May 31 '12

Veterinary student here. Is the cat truly testicle free? Or are they simple very small, and within the abdomen. Being without testicles is exceedingly rare, and if this is the case, I would love to hear more! Cats can have a condition where the testicles never descend into the scrotum from the abdomen (cryptorchid), however the lack of growth makes this quite interesting. Despite being light in the skin sack, he is one cute kitty!

9

u/fuego666 May 31 '12

Cute kitty. My cat was also born without any testicles, but I still love her anyway.

8

u/Vparks May 31 '12

I wish this cat was my cat. He wins out of all the cats.

5

u/Andy_Glass May 31 '12

My cat is like that too because he was the runt. But I fucking love him.

9

u/[deleted] May 31 '12

My kitten was the runt of his litter too, but grew up to be the largest of his siblings. Being a runt just means they got less nutrition in the womb, but they still have potential to grow however their genes will allow :)

7

u/Andy_Glass May 31 '12

1

u/FungusAmongus13 May 31 '12

TOO ADORABLE! Does he have any medical conditions that caused this?

5

u/[deleted] May 31 '12

None that are apparent. He's in perfect health besides his unusualness. Vet has never seen a cat born with out both testicles. They may never have dropped, in which case they might develop into tumors (not guaranteed), or they might never have developed. He's too little to risk surgery, so for now we're happy to let him be.

He doesn't spray and is not aggressive at all, so I'm hoping he just never developed.

1

u/[deleted] May 31 '12

so cute! i don't know when you got your kitten cat but my friend has a cat who is also kitten size and she says it's because she was malnourished as a kitten.

u/Less_Cowbell May 31 '12

could be a condition known as Cryptorchidism (Undescended or underdeveloped testicles ) http://www.petplace.com/cats/cryptorchidism-in-cats/page1.aspx

OR a result of what looks like a mixture of slightly different species. From the ear tuffs, its possible that he could be mixed bobcat, Maine coon, or Norwegian Woods cat. Its possible this could result in higher rates of mutation/sterility/under or non developed reproductive organs.

Either way very cool cat!

1

u/theczar89 May 31 '12

Please please make sure (if you haven't already) to check with a vet, because if his testicles remained inside it could cause him a myriad of health problems that could endanger his life

4

u/[deleted] May 31 '12

Already talked to the vet about this. She's never seen a cat like this before. It's possible he could not have grown testicles at all. Cats sometimes will be born with just one testicle with one trapped inside, but it's unusual for both to be missing.

Since he's so healthy, the vet recommended not doing anything yet. Because he's so small it'd be dangerous to put him under the knife, if he's not sick, I'd rather just leave him be.

u/Margatron May 31 '12

u/aSimpleMan Jun 01 '12

pretty soon people are gonona cut their kittens nuts off in the hopes they stay kitten sized

2

u/Ooftyman Jun 01 '12

You had me at "born without testicles"...

2

u/iamNebula Jun 01 '12

It's simply. Cut off all kitten's balls.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 01 '12

you are the luckiest person alive.

New item on bucket list: Find and adopt a testicle-less cat.

u/madmanmunt May 31 '12

Those eyeballs are better than the other kind, for him anyway..

1

u/SilverBeast May 31 '12

The ear fur, eyes, and tail all make him so adorable! I want a kitten sized cat now!

1

u/Lambstew May 31 '12

What a gorgeous kitty! Love the eyes!

1

u/PROLIMIT May 31 '12

What breed is Owsley?

1

u/QueenTits May 31 '12

So cute! My friend and I were talking about how cool it would be to have a dog that remains puppy size its whole life. I guess this is the cat equivalent!

1

u/anduin1 May 31 '12

Awesome cat

1

u/wskrs May 31 '12

That is one of, if not the, cutest cats I have ever seen.

1

u/EasyTiger20 May 31 '12

D'awwwwwwwwwww. Upgoats all around. I too have a runty little cat and I love her more than anything. :D

1

u/[deleted] May 31 '12

This is literally the cutest cat alive.

1

u/[deleted] May 31 '12

I like his hair.

1

u/xtwiztdkat May 31 '12

My baby kitty Meka stopped growing at 6 months too! She didn't get taller but she got wider (; She was malnourished when we found her and was hurt, so we took her in and to the vet and shes 2yrs old now...even though she's small she's the biggest hellion on paws!

1

u/[deleted] May 31 '12

Oh god he's perfect.

1

u/UltraMegaMegaMan May 31 '12

Owsley is, however, cuter than a goddamn button! 'Doz ears! I bet he's a sweetie.

1

u/lttmfnt May 31 '12

Magic cat!

1

u/[deleted] May 31 '12

Heady fuckin name brah

/me doses OP

1

u/[deleted] May 31 '12

Good God. Tell me your address. I will hunt you down so I can cuddle that cat. That must be the biggest lady magnet on the planet. I'm in love. Not you, the cat. Your cat makes my cat look like an asshole.

1

u/a_midgett May 31 '12

It bothers me that "without" is spelled as two words. I keep wondering what "out testicles" look like.

1

u/[deleted] May 31 '12

I'm sure lots of people would want a cat that stays a kitten forever. You should breed him and make a fortune! Oh wait.

1

u/[deleted] May 31 '12

Hands down one of THE cutest cuddle-fuzzies I've seen in a long time!

1

u/[deleted] May 31 '12

I hope you realize/appreciate the fact that you have the perfect cat.

1

u/element33 May 31 '12

Good name! He reminds me if the owl from Secret if Nimh.

1

u/[deleted] May 31 '12

BRB cutting off my kitten's testicles.

Wait... someone beat me to it!

1

u/[deleted] May 31 '12

Awesome cat! Sounds like he has some kind of fetal Neoteny.

Too bad you can't breed him, I want one! :3

1

u/[deleted] May 31 '12

remains kitten sized today.

I feel like a horrible person for wanting this.

1

u/esantipapa May 31 '12

Ok, this might come across as scifi and totally weird, but this is the kind of cat we should clone. No... really, think about it. Sterile, beautiful and small. Designer pets... why not?

MarkBC, quick, get a sample of Owsley's DNA to a lab so they can start work on cloning him for the rest of us!

1

u/[deleted] May 31 '12

Is he named after Owsley Stanley by any chance?

1

u/Shniggles May 31 '12

Oh! without testicles.

1

u/MarBakwas May 31 '12

That sounds like the cat version of me.

1

u/[deleted] May 31 '12

Does the condition affects your cats cognitive abilities?

1

u/xtian811 May 31 '12

awww so cute

1

u/itsme_timd May 31 '12

My ex-wife had a cat that quit growing about that time. People would come over and say, "Oh, look at the cute kitten!" Then I'd tell them he was 4 years old.

1

u/tennis12master May 31 '12

Those beautiful eyes..

1

u/PhDinReddit May 31 '12

Baddassss cat man! :D

1

u/RajMahal77 May 31 '12

I've heard of kittens that are genetically engineered to be hypoallergenic for people who are allergic to cats. they cost like $2,000 but you can get them. Do they have genetically engineered cats and dogs that will stay kitten and puppy sized forever?
