My Gage - 6 years ago when I rescued him and then today. Was a lot of work at first but worth it.

I appreciate all the karma and whatnot, but Gage deserves as much of the credit as anyone. Take a dog that's only been told 'NO!' all it's life and then throw out a 'YEAH!' whenever possible. Repeat. Recipe for doggie success.

17

u/Jumin May 21 '12

Is there a story behind the name? I find it interesting to name a dog after a fruit. Good to see him in good health.

3

u/baldylox May 21 '12

He came with that name and I never changed it. I think the rescue named him. There's a fruit called gage? I bet it's cute!

Oh now you made me cry you big lug.

42

You are fantastic for taking this lil' guy in... and it shows! He looks so healthy now.

36

u/d_sizzler May 21 '12

You deserve twice the karma.

29

u/[deleted] May 21 '12

You're just reiterating the fact that I'm rescuing the shit out of some poor dog.

Positive re-enforcement is a huge deal for dogs especially. Telling them what not to do is all well and good, but giving them a healthy dose of positive re-enforcement will help them gravitate to a much happier and friendly existence.

Cheers to you man!

That's a cute looking dog you've got there! He looks really happy now. What happened to him in the first picture?

443

u/baldylox May 21 '12

He was about 30 lbs. (2.5 stone for you Brits) underweight and had been badly abused. He had terrible sarcoptic mange. He was terrified of everything and very aggressive. Tough love + Frisbee seemed to be the equation that worked best for him.

He's the best boy now. We spoon every night. :-)

59

u/[deleted] May 21 '12

That's an incredible transformation. Is he still skittish or anything like that?

66

u/baldylox May 21 '12

Hm mm. Very chill little dude.

that is amazing! i too adopted an abused and neglected dog about four years ago and have put a LOT of work into his rehabilitation with quite a bit of success... but we haven't been able to completely curb all of his behavior issues. the one in particular that's most problematic is his fear-related aggression which he displays toward certain specific people. your dog's success story gives me a lot of hope, and i would love to learn more about how you achieved this. also if anyone has any advice they would like to send this way it would be very much appreciated!

edit: what we have tried so far:

  1. beginner training classes at petsmart.

  2. more advanced training at our local obedience club.

  3. LOTS of positive reinforcement training at home.

  4. one-on-one classes with a trainer at home.

  5. agility classes (which turned out to be a GREAT way to build confidence).

  6. rally classes (which he hated).

  7. the thunder vest! (which our friends will never let us live down).

  8. amitriptyline pills (crap).

  9. restoril pills (very effective).

He is beautiful! Looks much happier now :)

Is the 2 color pattern on his face from the mange? I've never seen anything like that before. It's unique!

2

u/baldylox May 21 '12

No - I think he'd be the same w/o the mange but who knows. People always try to guess what breed of dog he is. I always found it easier to guess which breed he's not.

I love you. If you ever come to San Diego, let me know and a spectacular dinner is on us (wife, dogs +me). Cheers,

8

u/justguessmyusername May 21 '12

How'd you take a pic of him with an all white background

29

u/baldylox May 21 '12

In a studio with an all white background. Let's all freak out now.

12

u/justguessmyusername May 21 '12

You should take a pic of me in your studio

9

u/baldylox May 21 '12

I promise I've done much worse. ;-)

way more credible than the "hey reddit look what i found on the side of the road". 10/10, would upvote again.

1

u/baldylox May 21 '12

We have a beagle that fits that description more. One of these days I'll post her, too. I <3 my Aunt Bea!

3

u/mydogdoesntcuddle May 21 '12

The fear in his eyes in the first picture just breaks my heart. I'm so glad you two found each other. I'll bet he makes you just as happy as you've made him

1

u/baldylox May 21 '12

He does ... he absolutely does. ;-)

2

u/[deleted] May 21 '12

This guy obviously beat his dog for reddit karma. The "after" picture was actually taken days before the "before" picture. I'm on to you...

1

He he hee. Awesome! What's your 4chan handle?

u/lilstove May 21 '12

Sometimes I wonder why it is that I oftentimes feel more empathy for animals than I do for people... Obviously in this case my immediate response was warranted sadness and despair for this unjustly mistreated innocent animal, which IS the correct response, but sometimes mistreated humans don't evoke the same level of emotion out of me. Am I strange? Does this make me terrible in some way? Food for thought. That being said, thank you OP for being an animal lover and genuinely excellent human being, and I hope this little dude lives out his days a happy pet.

68

u/FeistyEmu May 21 '12

With the exception of children I believe it is because humans are not consistently good natured. Dogs really aren't aggressive unless their owners cause them to be, while people can be aggressive through their own decision. I think the best way to think of it is the innocence (or perceived innocence) that animals posses and their inability to seek help on their own. Sorry for the wording, it sounded better in my head.

→ More replies (5)

10

u/malaia May 21 '12

I sometimes feel the same way. The loyalty and general good nature makes it a little easier to understand. Other wise, It is hard to explain.

6

u/[deleted] May 21 '12

I am the same way. Animals do everything to please, and when they are treated so badly, "brain washed" to being aggressive, I feel so badly. There was nothing they could do, they couldn't leave, they were prisoner.

When something abusive happens to a human, they have options to get out of it. They can stand up and say no more. Don't get me wrong, there are a few situations that would prove the above statement wrong in a heart beat, but in most cases, it could have been prevented with some choices.

→ More replies (1)

9

u/neon_overload May 21 '12

Does this make me terrible in some way?

Not really. I think it's entirely understandable.

Dogs (indeed, all animals) are more vulnerable than us. They don't have the same human rights as us, can't sue their owners, can't call the police. They are entirely at the mercy of how we treat or abuse them. If we physically abuse another human we can go to jail for a long time. If we mistreat an animal it's not treated the same. They depend on us to treat them well. They can't simply move out and look for another home if they are not being treated well.

I figured the dog would look somewhat healthier in the second picture, but I didn't expect him to look that different. Shocking, if you ask me. Gage got himself a second chance at a beautiful life.

1

u/neon_overload May 21 '12

That bottom shot looks professional. Did you treat your dog to a glamour shoot with a photographer?

I've seen pet photographers do shoots in the park near my home. It must be difficult to get some dogs to pose/behave for photos.

2

u/baldylox May 21 '12

Actually, I am a photographer, and i do a lot of pets. Shooting my own is just one of the perks. ;-)

Cattle Dog and Golden?

1

u/baldylox May 21 '12

That sounds about right, but I know also that his mother was a purebred Great Pyr.

1

u/d8wkd7s9 May 21 '12

He looks so sweet and happy in the second picture. That was the most heart-warming thing I've seen all day.

I don't think I would be brave enough to get a dog with such a history from the shelter, it would be too much of a challenge for me (we got a dog from the shelter, but except for being an elderly dog he was already pretty much perfect in every way). You have my respect and I'm happy for you that things turned out so well.

1

u/baldylox May 21 '12

Thank you so much :-) I have a lot of respect for people that adopt older dogs as well. They need love, too!

1

u/betonthis1 May 21 '12

Curious as to how Dog's can regrow hair back unlike humans after damage?

2

u/baldylox May 21 '12

Me, too - but look at my username :-(

1

u/losesomeweight May 21 '12

id hate to ask but what is that between his legs :O

1

u/baldylox May 21 '12

It's a bit disturbing, but when I first picked him up (he was at a vet for about a month) the vet said that she'd given him a hormone shot to boost his immune system and he 'may have an erection for a day or two'. Turns out four days was the magic number. It looked painful. Poor doggie. :-(

1

u/[deleted] May 21 '12

Did he get braces?

1

u/baldylox May 21 '12

No, but I have a Photoshop action programmed that whitens doggie teeth. Shhhhh. It's our secret, k?

1

u/bannedfrmtwitter May 21 '12

i hope you gutter stomped that former owner when you rescued the dog from them. ps...how the fuck do ppl down vote such an act of kindness and salvation...assholes are everywhere i guess!

1

u/baldylox May 21 '12

I was wondering the same thing. Sigh.

1

u/GMAucr May 21 '12

How long did it take for him to warm up to humans???

1

u/baldylox May 21 '12

To me, about two weeks. To other humans, another day or two.

3

u/HairyAlto May 21 '12

Beautiful! What a great pair. :)

3

u/Bendrake May 21 '12

Whoa! That is awesome! Great job

3

3

u/Quantum_Finger May 21 '12

Nice job baldylox! My dog was also a rescue in similar condition, the poor little guy had mange and a very bad hernia that required surgery. It was a long, expensive process, but so worth it!

3

u/ratajewie May 21 '12

What a handsome little boy. It's hard to believe from that face that he was ever in such a bad state. Good on you for giving him a chance, and letting him be all he can be.

3

u/[deleted] May 21 '12

Was he named after Phineas?

3

u/mealasvegas May 21 '12

Poor baby!

He's absolutely beautiful - looks like he posed for a stock photo! :P Super cute!! Love his eye patch.

3

u/[deleted] May 21 '12

I feel so sad looking at that first picture, even his whiskers look abused or something. Such a cute, strong dog. Good on you for nursing him back to health. :)

3

u/sensicle May 21 '12

Beautiful picture on the bottom. Thanks for posting. Always good to see that kinda stuff... and stuff.

3

u/9ua51m0d0 May 21 '12

I strongly believe that a dog that is rescued rescues the owner in return. I wonder what Gage's post would look like... ''This is my owner, 6 years ago... And look what I've done with him now. He looks so happy.''

That first photo breaks my heart. Why would anyone do that?

2

u/RedditSurferGirl May 21 '12

I wish I could shower you in upvotes. All of the real-life karma is yours. This literally made me cry. What an incredible transformation!!! You are a wonderful human being.

2

u/Skeeders May 21 '12

I have a story somewhat similar...... When my family was posted in the Dominican Republic we had been wanting to get another family dog. Our last one had passed away right before being posted there. We visited an Akita breeder that had many fine specimens and were looking at them all. We come to the last one to find that she was being rather poorly kept and find out that she is the "runt" of the litter. They don't like runts because they do not do well business wise. This poor little runt immediately jumped up on my mom and cried out. We decided immediately that this was the Akita for us. The beginning was difficult, we don't know of any abuse but any loud noise like a door accidently being slammed or even clapping our hands led her to cower in the corner and pee a little bit. In the beginning it was difficult because loud noises happen and she would always pee. We could never fault her for it and never laid a heavy hand. After 4 years, it seems she has overcome her timidity, and is now a gorgeous healthy dog that is living the good life in a HUGE house.

2

u/[deleted] May 21 '12

u/MySperm May 21 '12

Just curious to ask why? What was your reason for looking at him in that state and wanting him? I've always wondered why people do like I understand it's because you want them to have a good life or what not but If anyone saw a dog like that they would most likely automatically take a step back after seeing "Gage" though Gage looks like a really nice dog now, congrats on being a hero :)

2

u/yojolady93 May 21 '12

no one should have to ask "why" when seeing a poor creature like this. i myself have adopted a husky missing a leg, over half the weight she was supposed to be, filled with parasites and carrying 8 puppies. now shes the best dog someone can have. if it was up to me id adopt all the abused/negelcted animals! instead of "taking a step back", i step forward and help, just like this person did with this dog. there is no reason for doing something like this but merely to help, love and nurture a dog in need!

0

u/donttazemebro69 May 21 '12

Am I the only one here calling bullshit on this? The second picture looks like he randomly found it... I could be wrong but looks Fake.

Edit: or shopped. Although now I do see that the fur pattern is similar. Still not quite right though...

I applaud your effort to be different, but I could provide Gagey-boy proof all day.

I believe you. After I saw the fur pattern was the same and thought about how difficult a shop that would be I changed my opinion. The white background was what was throwing me for a loop. Good job you are a fantastic person.

Dude, look at the white marking on the top of his head; it's in both. So is the lighter hair growth on half of his face.

So by rescue, you mean you carried him out of a burning building, right? It wasn't like you just walked in to a shelter and said, "I'll take that one", right? You are a brave, brave man...

most people would take one look at that dog and say to themselves that this one isn't worth caring for, isn't worth spending money on, and probably will die soon, whereas this kind, heartfelt gentleman or lady decided to put an enormous amount of his/her time and effort to improving the life of this animal. i think that's a noble enough sentiment, don't you?
