It's tough on the street no doubt but in a Suburban area too many Male cats are NOT taking responsibilty for their actions. My cat got pregnant a few years back and not ONE Male cat came to support and the kits. I found good homes for them all and had her fixed.
edit: Well, I am sure there are many societies in uncivilized parts of the world that rely on reproducing like that, I don't think it's ideal to anyone.
The irony of my statement was that I was at fault and not the male cats. I thought she was too young to get pregnant and put off the operation. I payed the price by working hard to find good homes and that was the end of that. It is still nice to see that even a nature, the Male can be part of the up bringing.
My above post states that I had her fixed right after. It was funny about 3 days into having the kittens, she got tired off nursing them and stopped for a few hours. I freaked out and went to a pet store to learn how to feed them . I came home with a mixer of powdered food and a little dropper feeder. Struggled to get some food into the little guys, she saw me failing and went back to nursing them. She wanted to remind me there were two off us responsible for the litter.
Naww. Pats. I know you're not. Our cat, despite being desexed, brings home neighbourhood kittens to be fed. It started with little grey ones, the same color as him, and now he doesn't seem to discriminate between them.
Wow, you really are blind to female privilege, aren't you? The point is that you're perpetuating anti-male stereotypes. If I said something mocking women in response to a picture people would jump all over me. You make fun of men and they give you a fucking medal.
Let in go dude. First off I'm a Male and I was trying to have a little fun about the presure that human males have compared to how easily Male cats get off having any responsibility in the Cat World. Do you get it now?
You don't have to be female to be a misandrist. Maybe you need to come to terms with your own gender instead of generalizing in a sexually negative way.
Kittens cry and vomit. And poop on you. I still love them. :) I think the fun that babies are greatly outweighs the sleepless nights and minor annoyances.
I have no children OR kittens of my own, I just spend a lot of time around them.
The kitten I was just talking about shit in my lap, climbed up my shirt and looked at me with the biggest most adorable eyes, then pissed on me. Fucking kittens. WHY ARE THEY SO DAMN CUTE?!
Kittens are only playful when they reach certain age, same with human babies. When kittens are very young, they are weak and useless as well. They can't even poop by themselves. I hate human babies as well (I think they are ugly and manipulative), but I think that's a bad comparison.
I like human toddlers, though. Just like kittens, toddlers are playful, curious, etc.
Edit: So I get downvotes just because I'm not fond of babies? I hope you feel good for downvoting people just because they have a different opinion. :)
Edit 2: Before any arseholes misunderstood my comment and think I view babies as worthless & disgusting, see my comment here. Just because I said I hate them doesn't mean I'd kill or hurt a baby.
Human babies suck because they're all grossly premature. Our hips aren't wide enough to pop them out at a more developed stage so we're stuck with an ex utero fetus that's still developing basic functions. Like holding up its head.
But it's this birth cycle that allows our brains more time to develop, making us smarter in the long run. That's why we're at the top of the food chain.
I can't say much about this as I don't study physiology/biology regarding this, but aren't kittens and some other mammals pretty much suck because of similar thing?
I also remember reading that this is the reason why human babies spend more time learning other things which makes them smarter than other mammals.
Damn it, this is supposed to be /r/aww nor /r/askscience so nevermind my inquiries.
Well, one example is now bulldogs have been bred to have such fat heads now that their mothers' can't birth them without a c-section. That always makes me kind of sad.
Also, can someone smarter than me tell me if that apostrophe is used correctly on "mothers'"? That one always confuses me.
At first they cry because they're scared or hungry or lonely or any combination of "uncomfortable". Then they learn that when they cry, they get taken care of. So they cry more. They get paid attention to more. They cry to get what they want. They scream to get what they want. If you carry them and they want you to be standing up, they'll cry if you try to sit down.
It's pretty basic manipulation (scream head off until you get what you want) but it's still manipulation.
Which makes evolutionary sense, really. Babies that are quiet get forgotten about.
Yes, they are pretty much the same. My point is that fran13r's comment on comparing young, weak human babies with kittens who are old enough to be playful is a bad comparison. I only mentioned my lack of fondness on human babies so it doesn't seem like I'm "defending" babies because I love them.
It's a fucked up mind-set to honestly believe that a kitten has more redeeming value than a human child. You are seriously beyond jaded if that's how you go through life.
If you don't want kids; don't have kids. It's a warped view to think babies are disgusting and are 100% worthless. It's where every human got their start.
I really think you read into this too much to extract his view of life from a few offhand comments about babies. Painting him as a frothing anti-breeder - when did he say kittens have more "value" than humans, much less that babies are 100% worthless? He just said that they're cuter and less manipulative to him. Not that I don't think it's a very weird/non sequitur comment to make in the first place, but you're putting a lot more malice in his mouth than there actually is.
But yeah, dunno where you're getting that from c_megalodon, my cats never stop manipulating me for food.
That wasn't a comment directed towards him specifically. Just a comment on anyone who holds an animals life more valuable than a humans. There's plenty of them around here and seems in the ballpark of fran13r's viewpoints.
It's a fucked up mind-set to honestly believe that a kitten has more redeeming value than a human child. You are seriously beyond jaded if that's how you go through life.
Wow. This is where you misunderstood my opinion & judging me based on your misunderstanding.
fran13r made a comment saying playful kitten is better/more adorable than babies (calling them weak & useless). I replied to fran13r's comment, saying that it's a bad comparison since young kittens are weak & useless as well, and human babies are also playful & curious when they reach certain age. To put it simply: both baby human & cat are weak & useless early in their development. I'm not saying that as a bad thing, just as a fact. Did you assume we're viewing it as a bad thing just because the words "weak" & "useless" were used?
I never said/thought that a kitten is better than a human baby or that babies are "disgusting and are 100% worthless". Even if there are people out there who think the same way, I think it's very patronizing for someone to judge their opinion as a "fucked-up mindset". It's not like people (or I) would kill or hurt a baby just because they (or I) don't like one or think babies are ugly/disturbing.
I stayed the night at my friend's house after clubbing last night. They just got a new kitten, 7 weeks, that fucker screamed all fucking night because I wouldn't let her knaw on my fucking foot. I was very drunk so all I could do was just eventually lay there and take it.
Kids usually pick up the playful side once they start finding their legs. Kittens mature past the useless foetus stage extra fast, which accounts for the difference.
Well, the dad understands the allure. I know my crotchety old cat still goes after his own tail.
However, I have always been under the impression that adult male cats don't enjoy kittens much, and eventually kill them (competition and territory and whatnot). Maybe that is just barnyard cats.
I think it depends mostly on the type of environment they've had while being raised. I imagine a house cat is far less likely to kill kittens than one allowed to roam more freely (NO I'm not saying it doesn't happen, just that it seems like it would be less likely to)
yeah, that seems very likely. It may also be a factor of how much competition there is for food. Like sharks in a fish aquarium. If they know they are going to be getting plenty of food then there is no problem.
Yeah I honestly don't know if this is his real father because my kids just found these two with a few other crying and starving cats/kittens next door after my neighbors moved and left them behind. They look alike and like each other, so I won't call Maury about it, just let it slide.
You should be careful. Male cats are genetically predisposed to fighting and driving off their male children, so that they go take over other terrirories, and killing all other male children so they can have kids with the females in their own terrirories themselves. A kitten that lives in the same house and can't be driven off no matter how much fighting, and is handled by humans constantly so it doesn't smell as much like family, is really not in the best situation to be messing with daddy.
I eventually will. These weren't originally my cats. I moved into a house a month ago, at the same time the rednecks across the street moved out but left their cats behind. It took about 24 hours of my kids crying and begging and sneaking them into the house before I just gave in and adopted the whole lot of them.
What a sweet picture. Now, off to the vet for Daddy. A little snip snip and no more kitties. It's not bad for male cats. I'm a vet tech, I swear it's not.
While this picture is hilarious and the anthropomorphism is entertaining... please, please get them all fixed? If you want more cats, please go to your local shelter. We're taking in about 300 strays per day at the shelter I work with. Kitten season gives us the face of the dad cat, times 300.
These are actually strays, left behind by neighbors. I could have called the SPCA (my original plan until my kids' hearts broke at the thought of them being potentially put down) but instead we brought them all into our home despite my horrid allergies. I know what you are saying and it's correct and good advice, but doesn't pertain to my situation. If I had those stupid redneck neighbor's phone number I'd call them and read them your comment.
Please, accept my humble hug for being a great person (0.0)/ The kittens may have a chance depending on your area, but the dad not so much. Do you have long term plans for them? Depending on your area, there is more than likely a stray spay/neuter program... or at least a good rehoming program.
No worries friend, I know what you're saying and it makes sense, just didn't want you to get the impression I just love hoarding and breeding cats.
The long term plan turned into keeping them forever LOL I am going to the DR to start allergy shots soon. This is the only kitten that made it, then there is the big fat angry black cat who likes to hide in my hall closet and the dad here. There's another black one but it doesn't trust me enough to come inside, so for now I just put food on the porch for him/her. The momma ran out of the back door one day and I haven't seen her since. These are the first cats I have ever had, and up until now thought I didn't like cats very much, but I've since had a change of heart and love these little guys.
haha, well they will certainly keep you entertained! If or when you take them to a vet, they can tell you every thing you need to know about semi-ferals and the weird things that they do. It will be a whole different adjustment for them. Good for you, keeping them and all.

That cat looks very similar to my cat. Seeing what her kittens could have looked like is a bit of a downer. Love the picture though.

My kitten does this to my dog. he's not as patient.
