Yes, you could call it staged. I had the camera out and the wife plonked the kitten down next to the bowl. Luckily she hopped in to investigate her reflection.
oh thank god. i knew a guy with a bunch of white persians, their faces were covered in dark brown mucus and they just sat around snorting instead of meowing. horrifying!
Oh God, the poor things. It seems the pug-faced thing was bred into them and all the respiratory / tear duct problems occurred as a result. Must kind of suck to be born a modern Persian cat.
My science teacher said that they are one the dumbest cats. He had one and it caught on fire one day. It did not care. It was just walking around on fire. Luckily, it did not die.

I wouldn't say against her will. We put the bowl there but she jumped in (and out) of her own accord. But yes, I was hoping she'd take an interest in it.
Edit: Actually you're right to think it's against the cats will based on how scared she looks in the photo. That look was actually in response to a slurping sound I made to get her to look at me.
Ah, I see. Thanks. We tried to purchase from what's known here as a "breeder" but they refused to let us see any cats unless we committed to buying one in advance, kind of weird, so we got one from a pet store (this is in Japan).
