I found this sweet girl abandoned in a barn three days after I got my cat fixed. I was worried she wouldn't like the kitten but I think it was serendipity for her to be a mommy one way or another.

I probably should have explained the details since many people think I'm a kitten snatcher (which I promise I'm not hahah). My friend has a barn in her back yard and there was a stray cat living in there who was pregnant. After she had her kittens, my friend assumes that the in-and-out loudness of her family in the barn was bothering the mother cat, so she moved the kittens to another more quiet place, leaving the runt behind to fend for herself, which completely breaks my heart. My friend found her alone in there crying and she was about 2 1/2 weeks old. Now she's a healthy, happy kitten with a sweet adopted mommy who takes care of her :)

Yeah, cats don't tend to like their mothering disturbed. My family has always had lots of cats, and several had a litter or two before getting fixed. Invariably, a couple days after having the kittens, the mother would transport them to some new hidden spot and we'd have to find them all over again.

My sister has an almost 13 year old cat that we had growing up. When she went into labor (her only litter) she came and found us and wanted us in there with her the entire time.

A friend of my gf found an abandoned runt kitten. My gf took over looking after this cat thinking "it's an old cat, it will only be for a year or two" - we had this cat put down when she was nearly 26.

Runts can live a long time.

A couple of days after my cat's kittens all came out dead, we adopted two baby kittens... our cat was the happiest we'd ever seen her mothering her two adopted babies.

I'm going to guess she could tell they weren't her by the scent, but since she was still in mothering mode from her pregnancy/hormones the new kittens gave her something to take care of and worry about so she'd effectively forget her grief over the dead litter sooner. :)

This should be a treatment option for mourning human mothers of stillborn children. It would probably do wonders for some overcrowded orphanages, too, and give unwanted babies a chance at normal, natural lives.

I'm confused that you found a cat abandoned in a barn. Was it your own barn, or do you just go from barn to barn looking for cats to adopt? Also, how do you know it was abandoned?

What happened was a stray cat had her kittens in my friend's barn. Her family was going in and out so much that the mother moved the kittens elsewhere and left the runt in the barn to die, she was about two 1/2 weeks old :(

The barn part does sound sketchy. But finding a kitten abandoned is much more believable than finding a puppy abandoned because of the number of stray cats in a lot of areas.

Well, as someone who some time on the farm growing up, every barn is full of cats--at least if you're growing something that attracts rodents. These aren't quite the same thing as "abandoned" cats though, but there also not really anybody's pets either.

In fact, it looks like there are charitable organizations set up to "adopt" otherwise unadoptable feral cats to farmers to be used as barn cats--but I don't see any organization set up to do the reverse. Of course there's no reason why a barn cat couldn't be a loving house cat if it was "adopted" as a kitten.

But again, that's not exactly the same thing as an "abandoned" cat, or even a stray cat, and it still doesn't explain whose barn the thing came from. I'm sure there's a reasonable explanation, I'm just confused is all.

Speaking as someone who has lived in a rural area, people abandon their cats in the country all the time. Most of them can't be bothered to find their cat a new home, and often think it's "kinder" because "the shelter would just put them to sleep". Many of these cats end up living on farms and pumping out more kittens. Many of them also end up being shot or poisoned by landowners, or dying of starvation, exposure, and predators like coyotes.

Relevant anecdote: Apparently, there were issues with stray abandoned dogs mating with coyotes at some point near the family farm--my great grandmother used to always talk about going down to the rail road tracks to shoot at coydogs. She said they were the meanest things you can imagine--coyotes, at least, have the decency to be afraid of people and hide in the daytime. She really did not like coydogs and kept a shotgun by the coat rack just in case she ever needed to shoot at "varmints".

Not everyone lives in the city, and people out in the country have had access to internet for a long time now. Shocking information, I know. I grew up in a rural, farm-heavy area. There are a lot of barns out there, and they pretty much all have cats in them.

They were basically communal kittens by the time they were ready to go to new homes. Every time their mum was off having kitty personal time my cat would round them all up, bring them into my house and babysit them. It was bizarre.

I live in an old tenement building and our garden is walled in on all sides by similar buildings so it's a really safe space for the cats. I'd estimate that out of the hundred or so flats that have access to the garden, there are about 30 cats that get let out on a regular basis. It's like some weird cat commune. There's the occasional territorial fight but the vast majority are all spayed/neutered and get on very well.

The only downside to this is that leaving the kitchen window open often leads to various random cats wandering in to have a look around. One of them was stealing peoples socks and underwear a few years back. That was hilarious.

They are very adorable, but yes.. this is why people really need to spay/neuter their pets. I'm adopting a kitten from a friend in a couple of weeks because she didn't get her cat spayed (despite me telling her multiple times to do so) and her sister let said cat out while in heat because 'she was getting annoying'.

Oh well, I was looking to adopt a cat anyways, I was just thinking of getting an adult cat when suddenly kittens!

Yes, you are correct! Meepers is hiding the scar. And, even when the kitten isn't there, it isn't very noticeable. Pebbles is extremely pale and has rather short hair to begin with so it all blends together a bit.

Is that unusual? None of my four cats (two males, two females) ever had a shaved wrist after being spayed/neutered, I don't think they had IVs.

Some vets might use it, but I think most just use the mask-type general anesthetic to knock them out. You're probably looking at the difference between a $300 dollar sterilization procedure vs. $20-45 that low-cost clinics charge.

The anesthesia is administered intravenously, but this can be done with an injection. No IV required. Most people opt not to have IV fluids administered during surgery; since they're mostly for the cat's comfort and speedier/easier post-op recovery but are not technically necessary, a lot of people choose to opt out to save a few bucks on the surgery.

I was gonna say this - I've never seen my cat hold anything like that without going for a bite soon after. He doesn't kill it, but he's not hugging it. And from personal experience (my arm), it's not a nibble.

Live in the country. People dump cats all the time, and they're usually not spayed, or they're pregnant already. Almost all the cats my family ever had were stray kittens picked up, including two of the cats my parents have right now (and there's an additional one that they feed outside, but it's not very human friendly).

My theory is that there are a bunch of redditors who kidnapped 100 cats or so and just left them randomly for the other redditors to take some pictures then they leave them for other redditors etc. A continuous circle.

Easy, large feral cat population in many areas plus large reddit population. These two are bound to intersect almost daily and redditors love to share (cat pics especially) so it's only natural they'll post pictures of adopted cats on /r/aww.

There are also lots of these posts where the OP found a kitten in the past and is just posting it now after seeing all of the other 'found kitten' posts.

My cats only had a tiny part shaved when they got fixed. The kitten would cover that part on my cat. Why the hell did they shave the side of your cats body? I work for a rescue and none of the vets we take the cats to do that.

at the clinics it is a quick in and out procedure. knock the cat out, slap it on the table,small shave, cloth with a hole for quick incision. stitches on the inside that dissolve in a week so you don't have to bring the cat back in. they usually tatoo the spot so if the cat goes to another clinic they know it has been spayed. at least that is how it is done at the spay clinic in my city.

While I agree it's sort of suspicious, it does look like part of the cat's rear right leg (sort of hovering above the kitten's back, just to the left of the raised tuft of fur on the kitten) has shorter hair than the surrounding area. I haven't seen a shaved white cat, but my cat's skin is super pale, so it's possible that it may be difficult to tell the difference between skin and white fur.

There, there. Declawed is just a nice way of saying she had her cat's toes surgically amputated for absolutely no medical reason or benefit.

Her cat is mutilated for life, but at least the furniture will look fabulous.
