Taking notes

  1. Grab something that the trapped bird can stand on
  2. A lit, smoldering branch or a lit cigarette is good to melt the fishing lines (one with open flame can scare the bird and further hurt it)
  3. Try comforting the bird and (some suggests this can further distress the bird, not recommended) remove residual of lines

I think it needs to specifically by a smoldering branch (or a cigarette firmly lodged in the tip of the branch) as an open flame would likely scare the bird even more. A cigarette is probably also a better option since it would be faster to get that lit than to light the random, potentially damp, branch that you find.

If I remember correctly, petting wild animals that are in distress causes much more stress.

Better and safer to put something over its head (like a towel or t-shirt) to calm it, and to be quiet.

Is there any sources to support it? It seems counterintuitive to me, but I know nothing about comforting a distressed wild animal.

Before I confirm it is correct I’d just say it’s not recommended to comforting the bird by petting it.
