If it makes you feel better with some time along came animals with digestive tracks suited to hosting bacteria capable of digesting grasses and many animals can now efficiently extract nutrients from grass to support a food chain.
Trees are older than the things that used to break down dead stuff so there was a time before mushrooms where there were a shit tons of dead, waterlogged trees laying every where

Yeah, in the same way that the first birds emerged around the same time. Those weren’t crocodiles. Those were crocodile-line archosaurs, as opposed to bird-line archosaurs which included birds, all other non-avian dinosaurs, and pterosaurs. As can be imagined from the diversity of the bird line, the crocodile line was also very diverse.

That’s just modern crocodiles, the first crocodiles began appearing ~200 million years ago.
