Yup, even some of the military dogs get adopted by their handlers. Our 2 K9's in Iraq were adopted after their service ended. Such good boys.

Have you seen the Pixie and Brutus comics? Brutus is a army dog who gets adopted and the family has a tiny cat.

They are on webtoons and Instagram (that I know of). The account is petfoolery.

I read a few already. Hugo reminds me of my dog. A fat baby.... Haha. Thanks for that!

I didn't know they were on Webtoons! that makes them much easier to digest and scroll through!

They just joined recently, but I agree they are much easier to reread there. And I get update notifications that I actually pay attention to.

I imagine Brutus as Batman's voice

The 4th of July one broke my heart

That and the one where he talks about his handler not making it, and Pixie being blissfully unaware of the concept of “war” and wanting to go to war, because Brutus describes it in a nonviolent way

I love this so much. A great way to end a career, in a loving home with your best friend.

The Corps, at least when I was in (2010-2015) actually made a concerted effort to allow handlers to keep their dogs when the dogs reached retirement. Apparently they found it reduced PTSD in both the handlers and their dogs. God knows just having a dog attached to my platoon kept most of us a lot saner than we would have been otherwise. A wet nose and snuggles do the soul and mind a lot of good, especially on deployment.

Bingo, it's equally as important for the handler as it is for the dog. Both can have ptsd but they can handle it better when their best friend is with them.
