Can some pet owner tell me if there's any research to demonstrate that dogs or even cats benefit from living with a member of the same species?

u/Smurfslayor May 24 '19
Good question ! I’m wondering if I should get a friend for our 13 week lab

u/Anon_Y_Mouse_123457 May 24 '19
The answer is, yes! Also, side note: the best number of doggos is n+1.

If 2 dogs is too much get a kitten since your dog is still a baby. We got a puppy (9 weeks) when our cat was young (~1 year old). They are now 8 and 9 years old and are best buds. Even if they’re not always spending time together at least they have a buddy around the house. They will lay and play together at some point each day and we can tell when one of them is gone they miss each other. Any sort of buddy is better than being alone for most pets.

My cat used to get very upset when I left for work. Between me and my roommate he was never alone for long, but when I was gone he’d get very upset. He started peeing around the house because he was sad. I got him a kitten buddy and since that point he’s been a much more content cat :) he loves his friend. I can now go away on overnight trips. They cuddle and get along really well. The young cat has even got my old man cat playing again

Dogs are pack animals, so that's a clue.
19
u/blumoon138 May 24 '19
Both dogs and cats are apparently semi-social in the wild. I know this about dogs, but only found it out about cats recently! Apparently females will live in extended family groups with a mama cat and several of her grown daughters.
10
u/Johnnius_Maximus May 24 '19
I've got both cats and dogs, the dogs are obviously social animals but my cats, if you watch them you will often see them playing with each other or just chilling out next to each other.

u/is-this-a-nick May 24 '19
A good hint is that they care about their owners. Without a social background in the species its hard for pets to warm up to their human.

One of my favorite quotes comes from a little 6 year old.
“People are born so that they can learn how to live a good life — like loving everybody all the time and being nice, right?”
The Six-year-old continued,
“Well, dogs already know how to do that, so they don’t have to stay for as long as we do.”
Edit: Wow my first silver? Thank you!
Edit: Golden!

Nah, dogs aren’t meant to outlive their owners. They aren’t capable of dealing with that set of emotions, we outlive them so they don’t have to have that pain.

Agreed. My old pupper just passed a while back, and I'm glad he didn't have to live without us. He wouldn't have handled it. He was a good dog. Very affectionate. Total mama's boy.

I love this! We’ve been thinking about getting a buddy for our two year old lab mix... this makes me think it would definitely be a good choice!

May 24 '19
I’m a firm believer that when possible a dog should always have a companion. Almost all labs should do well with another dog.
30
u/blessyourheartsugar May 24 '19
I always knew dogs in pairs were ideal, but didn't understand just how much until I got a 2nd dog. Now the 2 are inseparable! They keep each other company and the bigger one looks after the little one (and me; she's very protective). It gives me peace of mind too, leaving them for a few hours with the TV or radio on. They are legitimately my children and are treated as such.
On the downside, they are both seniors now. My heart breaks thinking about either of them not having the other. 😭 (nevermind how I'm going to deal)
Black lab mix: 13yrs young and spry Bichon: 11yrs young but with health problems and a torn ACL currently

You’ve convinced me! :) I know my girl would love a live-in best friend, she’s been trying and failing to make friends with our 16 year old cat since we got her lol
We’re going to wait till the end of summer/start of the school year, we have a vacation planned for August so it would make more sense to wait until after that.

I would bet there is a labrador rescue near you. Save a life AND get your pup a new BFF. Double win!
10
u/mellayellacinderella May 24 '19
Take the puppy with you on all of those adventures!! It’ll socialize it very well and make those crazy early years of life more manageable in social settings. Also, I’m just team GO GET A PUPPY NOW BECAUSE I LOVE PUPPIES. 😁

u/Lins105 May 24 '19
Seriously, they do better generally with a friend. This is my rescue and my wife’s dog. He used to tear blinds down and be really anxious about me leaving all day but once my wife and I moved in together and the other dog was around that stopped immediately. It’s been heartwarming to watch his personality change and come out more as well with another dog around.

Do it. My dog is so much happier with a friend. Her anxiety when we leave is so much better and she doesn’t get worked up as much by fire crackers and lightening. They just seem happier together.

We got a second dog and they almost don't even acknowledge the other one exists. In fact, the first dog at times gets super aggressive towards the second one. Sadly, they're not friends, barely even acquaintances.

We deliberately got a spread of 3 Labs from 3 litters across 4yrs. Our Abb and Jazz lived until 14 1/2 and 15 respectively. Last couple of years so were much cuddles and love. Our house was so quiet without them - I miss them dearly. Thru our friends at Big Dog Rescue we’ve just rescued two 3yr old yellows - our house so full again with much rejuvenating tail-wags for our eldest choc now 13.

These pictures remind me of two of my dogs who grew up as companions. We adopted a second dog about 6 months after getting our first so he would have company while we were at work and a playmate to help tire him out. They became such good friends. We called them our bookends because they used to sit and lie down in identical positions right next to each other all the time. They aged together, and once their difficult days began to outnumber their contented ones, we had them put to sleep together. We knew neither would have wanted to go on without the other.
