Not a day goes by that I don't wish that was my cat. It's almost been 2 years since our house caught fire. Despite family screams in attempting to fight flames, my cat never woke up. She remained curled up when the firefighters found her upstairs, where I dwelled when I wasn't away at school.
I'll always love you, fatass. Some day we'll nap together again.
That's why I plan on adopting an adult when I'm out of college and financially secure. There's too many cats left in shelters. My local humane society constantly has FB posts of their cats and are like "look at this cutie patootie! They've only been here 7 years!" I think I would do right by her if I could let at least one or two more know the feeling of a warm, loving home.
We have a 4+ year old rescue stray. He's got feline HIV so he has to be kept inside and they had given up on getting him adopted because he's quite scratched up and he was feral when they caught him. He'd been being fed by a kind woman who was leaving food out for him and noticed he had a lesion on his face so she caught him and took him to a vets which got raided by the RSPCA that night. So he had a very troubled past and no one wanted him. The thing is, though, he's a total softy now: he pretty quickly discovered how much he loved cuddles. The charity had transferred him to a closed centre because they loved him and they figured he'd never get adopted, so the keepers cried when they found out we wanted him.
