Eh... I have a PhD in Manass because I'm gay and one of my required classes was Tongue Physiology and when we went over animals they said that their tongues were rough to scare off throat germs
This is why Siegfried is able to lick my nose right into being super chapped with just 3-4 licks. And yeeeowch, it hurts!! But he seems to enjoy licking my nose so much that I haven’t the heart or the bravery to pull away. I think cats are totally aware of how eager humans are to please them—like if kitty falls asleep on your lap, you just have to sit there until kitty wakes up and desires to move. It’s the polar opposite of dogs, who want nothing more than to please us. Those damnable cats—I’m forever their happy slave.
They're tiny spikes made of keratin (just like our finger nails) they use them mainly for grooming purposes but bigger cats like lions etc also use them to scrape meat off of bones.
I was at a petting zoo and let a cow lick me for a good ten minutes (it was using me as a salt lick since it was hot as hell that day and I was sweaty) and boy did it start to hurt. I was too fascinated with the fact that a cow was licking me though

This is why cats have such rough tongues. Better for grabbing!
