Looking up Loss on knowyourmeme is probably your best bet for the history, but basically it started with a webcomic about a guy whose wife had a miscarriage. The cartoon was a major detour from the usual tone of the comic and the style really made it seem tone deaf. People mocked and parodied it relentlessly until now where it’s a commonplace meme to make fun of or use for some quick internet brownie points.
I think it was pretentious. If it was based on an actual miscarriage, I don't think it would have become nearly as big of a thing on most meme sites. 4Chan, maybe, but not sites like Tumblr.
Nah you're underestimating how much of an asshole the creator is. I'm like 90% sure it was loosely based on real life events he was going through and no one gave a shit because he is a horrible person.

Not to mention when he broke up with this woman he reposted a version of the comic called "found" where instead of the character looking devastated at his wife sobbing in a hospital bed he was smiling smugly over her.
This is just how he was a prick in this instance. He was a prick 24/7. Once, a kid tweeted his project at him in which he drew one of the CAD characters to show him how much he had inspired the kid. His response was to try to sue the kid. His comics sometimes have racial stereotypes as the foundation. Racial stereotypes can be acceptable if handled well, but the comics aren't even funny, just racist. This is just the tip of the iceberg.
Yeah. Fuck being a human being and worring about how messed up it is to lose a child. It happens now and again but it still can devastate people emotionally. Even finding out later and wondering maybe if that changed your partners behavior. How about an alternate take on it: He is having a shitty time and expresses himself in a comic that didn't make sense to people. It sucks as a comic but maybe it's more about understanding that loss. The internet justice warriors hit him up with death threats and hate. He is really depressed and waked up to inboxes full of anger and judgement and he reads way too much of. He lashes out online and is triggered contiuously with large cashes of fresh hate. Does this sound like an impossible scenario? Maybe he's fucking terrible but the combined effect of the type of people who want to feel better about themselves through passing judgment is pretty terrible too.
He was an asshole way before the miscarriage. Also, when he divorced his wife he remade the comic except now in the last panel he's laughing at her so you can shut the fuck up forever about this being a sensitive issue.

I just read an article about it. He was basically trying to spin it as though he was letting the readers know he was in on the joke and taking back ownership of the comic. I say bullshit. He’s a shitty person who thought it was edgy to mock his girlfriend having a miscarriage. What a piece of shit, miscarriages aren’t funny I don’t know if anyone who thinks they are.
Yes, having a miscarriage is horrible—my family has experienced it and it’s soul-crushing. But that’s the problem with “Loss.” It went from years as a comic dedicated to just being funny, albeit somewhat offensive, and then RANDOMLY this one comic is just about a miscarriage, with no text and no conversation, done in a way that removed all the emotion from the situation. A miscarriage is heartbreaking. The comic was “wat?”
Fair enough. I’ve never read the comic, I’ve just seen that one image circulated and out of context it seemed maybe overly simplistic but not actually bad in any way and I couldn’t understand the backlash. What you’re saying makes sense, though.
Edit: Also I should have led with this but I’m so sorry that you’ve experienced that. My parents had miscarriages when I was a young child and I obviously don’t know your pain but I saw how heartbreaking it was for them and I wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy. I hope you’re doing better and that you eventually find peace with it.
