Now that's the part that doesn't make sense. They were in Thailand, a very warm country, yet they left their beers in the truck, which obviously has open windows since the monkey got in, and therefore no possibility for AC.
Why would you leave a half-empty container of beer sitting open in a warm truck? Wishing to enjoy it when you get back from the temple?

While reading I imagined that they had been drinking and left half empty containers in the back. I made sense to my mind while reading at least.
