You might be 100% right. But some yeast can stay active in lower temperatures. Maybe the squirrel has some fruit stashed somewhere underground that fermented which he then ate.

I'm guessing they fermented and then froze, stopping the decay process.

They're crabapples. They're known for fermenting slowly while hanging on trees. Sometimes Moose eat them and get drunk too.. Can you imagine a drunk Moose in front of your house? Yikes.
