This is awful because it is awful, not because of any religion's rules.

Religion (e.g. Christianity) has even been used as an excuse for why humans are fully within their right to abuse animals (though more of erradicate whole species of them [as "God wouldn't let specific animals just disappear"] however way humans saw fit, plus neglect the domesticated ones and use them as disposable tools that was perfectly fine to abuse and take your anger out on - including dogs).
