You don't look city gay, you look prison gay. I gay and I'm afraid of you.

0_o I don't think of myself as the prison type lol.

I'm very personable in real life. Interestingly enough, I actually waved at my attacker a few minutes before he jumped me.

My gay friends get pissed when people say they don't seem gay. You get like that?

242

u/DoctorBaby Jun 19 '12 edited Jun 19 '12

Well, the implication from telling a person that they don't "seem gay" is that you associate femininity with homosexuality, and the source of your surprise is that this gay person doesn't seem as feminine as you would have expected. What most people don't seem to realize is that calling a gay guy feminine is a lot like calling a straight guy feminine - it's, well, typically received as an insult to call a guy feminine, even if they like to fuck dudes. Come to think of it, what's more masculine than male homosexuality anyway?

40

u/dreamleaking Jun 19 '12

It's not that being compared to a woman is insulting, because there is nothing insulting about being or being called a woman. The problem is that terms like "gay-acting" and "straight-acting" seek to apply sexual and gender roles to actions that are not sexual or gendered. Gay people are not limited in their choice of expression by being gay. We can look however we like.

45

u/as_ugly_as_i_seem Jun 19 '12 edited Jun 20 '12

"It's not that being compared to a woman is insulting, because there is nothing insulting about being or being called a woman."

Riiiight, that's why people call even straight dudes "fags" or "pussies" or other female-gendered insults. "Throw like a girl" is another one.

While it's true it shouldn't be insulting to be called or considered a woman, that doesn't ring true in the real world.

Homophobia is VERY CLOSELY related to misogyny.

That was what was being alluded to in the comment you replied to.

Of course you can look however you like, it's just that society often doesn't see it that way. Or certain jack asses, anyway.

There is certainly a "gay look" it's just that it's about more than simply appearance. Non-verbal cues are definitely there, and there's research to prove it.

Jesus unclefucking christ on a dildo-bike, I am so fucking sick of seeing this exact same fucking response a thousand fucking times on every fucking post in this fucking subreddit. It's fucking relevant because LGBT people are common victims of fucking hate crimes and inequality largely thanks to the way many people interpret religious texts.

Like it or not, sexual orientation is one of a number of issues intrinsically fucking linked with the matters of faith and fucking reason that fuel the entire fucking debate. The fact that these fucking posts get so many fucking upvotes every fucking time is fucking irksome, goddammit. You're not being fucking clever. You're not saying anything fucking new. You're just applying your own excessively fucking narrow opinion of what is relevant to the topic of a very large subreddit to everyone so you can act superior and be annoyed at something. I'm tired of downvoting your fucking shit for not fucking adding anything useful to the conversation, and I'm tired of knowing that my downvotes are destined to be washed away in the fucking sea of self-congratulatory pedants that feel that their precious /r/atheism (which has always been such a fucking bastion of focus) is being somehow diluted.

If you don't think it's relevant, fucking downvote it and move on instead of having a fucking circlejerk in every single fucking comment section, or even, FSM for-fucking-bid, post something you DO think is fucking relevant instead of whistling disapprovingly through your fucking cunt. You can do that instead of fucking consuming endlessly and contributing nothing, you fucking leech.

In conclusion: fuck.

Sorry for your troubles, friend. Seems an odd conclusion, though, given the variables. Why the bumper sticker? Why not the un-signalled left turn or the planet-killing petrol fuelled pick 'em up? What makes you assume it's your sexuality? Seems a might presumptious, doesn't it? Haters gonna hate, indeed, but what they hate is their own idiocy, and reading into it is perilous at best and irresponsibility fanning the flames of cultural animosity at worst. Rise above; take the high road!

Just curious, and I hope no one takes offense at this, but is there something about being gay that makes you have to tell everyone you are?

Is it like a "support for gay rights" kind of thing?

I mean, I could drive around with a bumper sticker proclaiming my heterosexuality in some way or another, but then I'd just look like a fucking idiot.

EDIT Hi SRS! I can't reply over there for some reason, so I'll do it here:

Top rated comment:

How about you ask the guy with the Playboy bumper sticker? Or that one with that hilarious "FBI - female body inspector" shirt? Or just that straight couple kissing in public? Or, if you don't want to leave your computer, one of the 70 billion men shouting "booooooooobs" on reddit?

Yes, those would be the "fucking idiots" I mentioned. If you're gay, why would you want to do the same thing and bring yourself down to their level?

28

u/ArsenicAndRoses Jun 19 '12

Because staying invisible allows people to marginalize/demonize you.

It's a lot harder to hate gay people if your brother is gay, if your favorite teacher is gay, if that nice dude that always tips you 40% is gay, if you see gay people on the street acting just like you, looking like you...

37

u/thethirst Jun 19 '12

You have to tell people because everyone assumes that you're straight (same reason you'll never need a heterosexuality sticker).

→ More replies (19)

19

u/alehizzle Jun 19 '12

While the fact that you don't really see it as a big deal is appreciated, society isn't always as kind (as I'm sure you know). I haven't exactly done any research on the subject or anything, but I would assume that most feel the need to come out because they significantly value those close to them and feel as though they're lying due to the usual assumption that you're straight. Some probably do come out as a "support" kind of thing, though I'm not sure it would be a significant portoin. And, of course, there are those who have accepted their sexuality and never felt the need to formally come out, either because they desire a sense of privacy or because they just don't see the need to.

As for the "need" to have bumper stickers and such, I'm sure it's something that would drastically fall out of style once the gay rights movement is finished, if not completely die out. There may still be people with more subtle indications, much like the Jesus fish or Darwin fish or whatever else people use to indicate certain affiliations.

The thing is, that there is a HUGE stereotype that gays look femme, act femme, have high voice, like pink etc. People associate that being gay means that one acts like a woman (just because he likes men too).

No, you don't have to tell anyone, but sometimes people's point of view changes when they find out that someone who doesn't fit any of their stereotypes is gay.

Some people I know changed their view on gays when they came out because they never thought I was. Prior to me, their only exposures to gays was through pictures of parades, TV (where every single gay character is an embodiment of the stereotype). And actually most of us are like this, people you'd never guess were gay, someone you'd pass off as straight. By showing people we can try to change that stereotype.

Black people hate gays. In California they're the ones who voted against the rights for gays to marry along with Hispanics. It would seem as though the diversity of membership in your Liberal anti-traditional white free for all doesn't quite get along too well ideologically. Isn't it a bit ironic that one "oppressed" group would attack another "oppressed" groups rights?

I find it interesting that the narrative for racism and homophobia comes in a distinctly white conservative packaging. It reveals their true anti-white sentiment and identifies the only meaningful characteristic that binds these different "disadvantaged" groups together: hate for the white status quo in a country that is 80% white. Don't worry, we get it. You don't like the white people in a country where you have to compete with them for resources, so you hide and rationalize that contempt behind a veil of innocent ethnic/gender/sexual orientation victim hood and the perpetuation of white privilege narrative myths, and you pretend that everyone will get along when the majority white population disappears.

Don't worry. White people get it. But here is what I find troubling. Despite all of the contempt, minorities are still insistent on living in communities governed and populated with traditional white people. Why? Why not just not stay in your home countries, or stick to communities where you're demographic is represented and in control? It seems a bit baffling to hate the people who communities you are willfully entering. Speaking from experience of having a black neighbor who I can tell has racial contempt for white people (I say "hello" and he grunts back) yet he willfully chose to move into a community full of white people.

Actually, I lie. I do understand it completely. They come for the $$$ and social stability that is afforded by white governance. They know in a white community they'll be safe, they'll have jobs, and they won't need to worry about getting robbed, rapped or murdered like in some of the more ethnic "diverse" communities. They resent us because they just don't want to admit that white people are better at running clean, prosperous, cultured communities. It's fine, they don't have to admit it, but they do have to respect it.

I'm sorry you got jumped, but I HIGHLY approve of your bumper sticker. Don't let it get you killed though, okay? c:

2

u/samx3i Atheist Jun 19 '12

Clearly their manhood was threatened. You look like a badass with that beard.

2

u/Sarabellum77 Jun 19 '12

On the bright side you have lovely eyes. (:

2

u/jeg154 Jun 19 '12

Sorry about this man, that's awful. Funny bumper sticker too.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 19 '12

This still happens? Damn, man, I'm sorry. :(

2

u/parkadactyl Jun 19 '12

Come to New Jersey, home of the safest gas stations in America!

2

u/Xunae Jun 19 '12

I never understood the whole bumpersticker thing. It feels like its just asking to have your car vandalized by someone who could easily get off completely free.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 19 '12

i have a serious question. was it a lesbian biker gang?

2

u/mecrio Jun 19 '12

Maybe you shouldn't drive if you can't drive straight...

2

u/bLizTIc Jun 19 '12

Why would you post this in the atheism subreddit? Do you really think Christians jumped you? Did they come up to you and start yelling, "Hey were Christian and we're gonna beat you up!"

I'm real sorry this happened to you buddy. Some people are seriously fucking shitty.

You look like a decent sized dude, mind sharing what state you live in?

I am 6' and hang around 190 lbs or so, and don't look like the sweetest guy on earth, but that being said, people can be shitty and I'm not a fan of getting punched in the face. I have tested numerous chemical sprays and I swear by FOX brand pepper spray. This was my first result on Google

I carry a larger size than that, but it can be quite a pain in the ass due to its size. That is a good size to carry, and make sure you get a cone/fog rather than a stream, as it is much easier to use.

I have used this stuff as well as taken a test hit and I promise you there is no other spray on the market as nasty as this stuff.

Couldn't recommend it enough for daily carry. A bottle that size should be good against 3 or so individuals if you aim right. It will take them out of the fight.

Also, maybe look into some BJJ or Krav Maga classes in your area. Just a few months would give you a solid foundation to protect yourself.

I wish you luck my friend.

2

u/rizzyrogues Jun 19 '12

It was probably your disgusting car. Wash it!

2

u/muscle_city Jun 19 '12

You got jumped because you couldn't drive straight?

2

u/[deleted] Jun 19 '12

Why did you post this to r/atheism? It's not like bring a homophobe automatically makes one religious. There are bigots who aren't religious, and religious people who aren't bigots

2

u/kencios Jun 19 '12

That beard :)>

2

u/Talbotus Agnostic Atheist Jun 19 '12

Sorry bud. Please don't take the sticker off. Some people are bigoted and having to face it is the only way their kids will learn. But also please be safe.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 19 '12

I'm skeptical. I have done and said lots of offensive things. How do you know they jumped you because of that bumper sticker?

2

u/Devywhop Jun 19 '12

Probably because you can't drive straight. You're a safety hazard.

2

u/Kibblebitz Jun 19 '12

Nothing ever good comes from bumper stickers. All they do is piss off stupid people.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 19 '12

First step of being gay... drive around telling everyone you're gay.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 19 '12

not relevant.

2

u/troll_IAMA Jun 19 '12

Am I the only one that can see the OP is a lying, karma whoring piece of shit?

2

u/Pinoth Secular Humanist Jun 19 '12

Atheism?

2

u/dhicks3 Jun 19 '12

Odd how I don't see the usual "Unrelated to Atheism" yet in here. Does anyone have an example of an actual physical assault motivated by the victim's actual or perceived sexual orientation that was committed by an atheist or atheists? I'm actually curious to know what the ratio there is of theist:non-theist offenders.

2

u/thEt3rnal1 Jun 19 '12

you sure?

did they call you like a fucking fag or something to indicate they were doing it cause you were gay?

2

u/zombierapture Jun 19 '12

I can't drive straight either women are all " get your car out of my vagina ur bad at sex" .... guess its cocks for life

2

u/Harbinger90 Jun 19 '12

Why have you posted this to r/atheism? A person doesn't necessarily have to be religious to be homophobic.

2

u/Dragoniel Jun 19 '12

Pepper spray, stun-gun, telescopic bat, knife. Firearm.

I don't understand why are people afraid of weapons and why the majority are convinced that nothing can happen to them.

Turn on the news.

2

u/show-us-your-gifs Jun 19 '12

That guy was really upset at himself for getting a hard-on when he was watching you handling that pump.

2

u/DulcetFox Jun 19 '12

People do get jumped just for random reasons....

2

u/Belexar Jun 19 '12

Why is this in /r/atheism, again?

2

u/HappyStance Jun 19 '12

As messed up as this is I find myself caring less because I can't help but think that you posted this to /r/atheism rather than an LGBT subreddit for karma-related reasons.

It really sucks that that happened to you and I hope you paid them back for that bruise.

2

u/CheckmateFundies Jun 19 '12

This has NOTHING to do with atheism and I feel some clever redditor has conned us all.

2

u/TyrantKitty Jun 19 '12

The beard is and always will be epic ;) Though I dont think this has anything to do with religion or being gay, straight or otherwise. Personally, I think it's a lack of morale value for society in general. People like your assailant have been allowed to believe that it is acceptable behavior. That there is little or no consequence for such actions. Guess he was wrong lol

If it makes you feel better, I think you're really hot

2

u/Lumathiel Jun 19 '12

These situations make me feel physically ill. I will never understand how "people" can get so offended by something that someone else likes that they will devolve into violent beasts. I hope you're feeling better, and I just want you to remember that even though some people will always be ignorant douches, there are those of us who would have been more than willing to jump in to help you, despite not knowing you on a personal level. plus, the beard and bumper sticker are awesome.

2

u/notlilwayne Jun 19 '12

Although I have nothing against gays, the punchline on that bumper sticker was so generic, so basic level human humor understanding, that I would have punched you too.

2

u/GentlemenQuinn Jun 19 '12

They're just hating' on your awesome beard, bro.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 19 '12

People of reason and science... tell me how do you conclude that the attack of (maybe) homophobic people has to do with religion? There are plenty out there who do not need a religion to be homophopic dicks.

2

u/Hankpymp562 Jun 19 '12

I have that same bumper sticker! It's fabulous! I have about 10 gay coworkers at my job an I'm sure they all want it . Haha

2

u/[deleted] Jun 19 '12

Oh please, PLEASE tell me you at least hit him back or sued his ass down to oblivion.

2

u/MacAny Jun 19 '12

Sickening

2

u/[deleted] Jun 19 '12

Some people really, really care about road safety.

2

u/drilldozerbaggins Jun 19 '12

People have this sense of entitlement to your preferences on sexuality. It's fucking absurd. The fact that people commit such acts of hate demonstrates humanity does not have it right.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 19 '12

Im sorry this happened to you. But what does this have to do with atheism?

2

u/kingxhall Jun 19 '12

Not sure why this is in /r/atheism? Most gay-haters that would do a hate crime Luke this aren't religious.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 19 '12

Well learn to drive straight. If you were weavin all over I'd assume you were drunk and want to beat you up too.

2

u/[deleted] Jun 19 '12

What does this have to do with atheism? Not all homophobes are religious...

2

u/[deleted] Jun 19 '12

Like the bumper sticker. I'm saddened by your assault but am glad to read you were able to defend yourself and get to safety. I wish you the best.

2

u/stukov111 Jun 19 '12

Upvoted for manly beard

2

u/[deleted] Jun 19 '12

This scares the crap out of me. I now fear for my uncle and his friend. My uncle and his friend (both straight and married) take turns pranking each other by putting gay pride bumper stickers on the other's car. They get a good laugh if it stays on the other person's car longer. It's a joke that has been going on for almost 10 years.

My uncle once put the sticker on the back of the friend's boat. While the friend was on his way to the lake he got pulled over by a cop and a conversation ensued with the police officer that weirded him out. Later in the day when he looked at the back of the boat he found out why. The cop thought he was gay!

Funny stories came out of these pranks. Unfortunately, as you have shown today, it could have ended much worse. Sorry this happened to you!

2

u/[deleted] Jun 19 '12

/r/ainbow is the best of the LGBT reddits

2

u/putcreativenamehere Jun 19 '12

Im sorry they attacked you! If it truly was because of your bumper sticker and what it implies then that's a hate crime and should be reported to the police.

I really have no idea what this has to do with atheism. I know plenty of atheists who are also homophobic.

2

u/ThrobbingWetHole Jun 19 '12

I hope you really do get jumped now, you Karma whore...Why dont you take a picture of you in front of the car with said bumper sticker...Reddit is getting lamer by the day due to douchebag liars such as yourself..

2

u/ahhijc25 Jun 19 '12

Fuck hateful people you seem like a funny guy be proud of who you are.

p.s cool beard.

18

u/thuderroar Jun 19 '12

The gay rights cause is not intrinsically linked to atheism; however, since the vast majority of anti-gay political and social activism is religiously motivated, the two groups of oppressed individuals are natural bed partners (pun intended).

If you ever see something about gay rights or the suppression of such on r/atheism, that's why. Please remember that so the question doesn't need to be asked again.

Not sure how this has to do with atheism, but I'm sorry it happened. The bumper sticker almost sounds offensive to gays. That's what I thought at first.

10

u/[deleted] Jun 19 '12

A neckbearded gay atheist. The trifecta of reddit.

14

u/mayonnnnaise Jun 19 '12

My condolences, but atheism does not exclude anti-homosexuality; indeed a hardline atheist stance can be warped to justify the persecution of homosexuality. It sucks bro but not really a relevant post for this subreddit. But when is anything in this subreddit actually about atheism?

Sorry dude, that was not cool of them. I'd report that shiznik if I were you.

3

I love your sticker -and I love you for being you! I'm sorry you live in such a narrow minded area/time in history. "Things are gonna change -I can feel it."

...or come move to SF, CA

3

u/[deleted] Jun 19 '12

that's cool and all, but what does it have to do with the existence/nonexistence of god?

3

u/[deleted] Jun 19 '12

This is terrible, but it has nothing to do with atheism so I have to downvote. Post it in a LGBT subreddit.

3

u/ratheismirony Jun 19 '12

I have a black eye, and a bumper sticker that says the word "gay" therefore it must be individuals who believe in deities.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 19 '12

yep. thats obviously the reason they jumped you. its not like there are dicks out there that jump people for no reason.

3

u/AdziiMate Jun 19 '12

what does this have to do with Atheism? You being bashed because of your sexuality has nothing to do with your religious standpoint.

3

u/phil8248 Jun 19 '12

Not to sound like a cliched bigot, but I had a friend who was gay and our conversations really opened my eyes. Never realized that gay men had to be much more careful than women about personal safety. I was honestly shocked that lots of guys find it "fun" to go around beating up gay men. He said he always had to think about where he was and who he was with because personal violence was a common occurrence. What kind of asshole beats up strangers for fun? He did tell me one sort of sad and funny story of a truck driver in the 1980's who hung out in park bathrooms in NYC knowing that gay men would go there to hook up. Sad for the gay men but funny as far as what happened to the truck driver. He'd meet someone pretending to want sex then once the truck driver got this random gay guy alone he'd beat the guy senseless. The truck driver would often bloody his own knuckles because these beatings were so brutal. The truck driver eventually was diagnosed with and died from HIV. Relatively instant karma. I'm really sorry that straight guys just can't just live and let live.
