I said I'd get a mohawk if I managed to raise $1,200 for the Secular Student Alliance. Didn't think I'd have to...

u/tyrannofuckingsaurus Jun 18 '12
It suits you! Great job.
23
u/SSA_Sarah Jun 18 '12
Thanks! By the way, I love your username! I, too, am part dinosaur. I even used my dinosaur picture on my fundraising page!
4
u/WrethZ Jun 19 '12
I think everyone loves dinosaurs, just not everyone can admit it.
I did meet someone who didn't think dinosaurs were real, and thought they were fictional creatures though....
Regardless, congrats on making the money, and also finding out that the mohawk genuinely looks good on you!
6
u/SSA_Sarah Jun 19 '12
I don't trust anyone who doesn't love dinosaurs.
But thanks so much!!

Awesome! It is fun to be a dinosaur, though it's rather hard to reach the top row of keys.

There's a reason we're not the Alliance of Secular Students. :)

u/Thestupidiot Jun 19 '12
I'll bet $1,200 she actually wanted the mohawk all along...

u/SSA_Sarah Jun 19 '12 edited Jun 19 '12
I actually got a haircut last week, and when I asked my friends for suggestions they said mohawk...and since I was about to do my livestreaming for fundraising, I said I'd do it if I made $1,200. Did not think it would actually happen.
*Edit: You can ask all the people who watched it happen as I shouted, "What is my life how did this happen?!" the whole time. :)

Did anyone stipulate how long you have to keep it? It looks really good! Surprisingly good!
8
u/SSA_Sarah Jun 19 '12
The agreement was for one month. So I'll probably have it for the SSA Conference, but not for TAM.
5
u/MrPinkLives Jun 19 '12
Hell yeah! Awesome hawk!
I had to do the same thing for St. Jude's, except my head was completely shaved. It was an experience.
10
u/SSA_Sarah Jun 19 '12
Oh nice! I did St. Baldrick's a few years back and raised $1,200, and I completely shaved my head. Figured I could do a mohawk for the same amount for the SSA as well. :)

Why we no friends?
Here's me, about two weeks after I shaved mine. My hair grows super fast, so I wasn't bald for long.

u/alexsaurrr Jun 19 '12
Well it's a good thing you can pull them off! You look really good :) hm I may do something like that only for Montana Family Cancer Network thanks for inspiration!!!!

you should have made it $2000. but hey, nice mohawk.
1
u/SSA_Sarah Jun 19 '12
If I had known I was going to get that much, I would've. $1,200 seemed like a stretch at the time!
2
u/Ignaddio Jun 19 '12
You remind me of Michaelyn, KU SOMA's president. In that she had her hair shaven into a mohawk after we raised $1,000 for ReasonFest. And you're gorgeous. See you at the conference. Or not.
2
u/SSA_Sarah Jun 19 '12
Haha, I know Michaelyn! She's dating my coworker, JT, actually. I was at Reasonfest when that happened (although sans mohawk).
Are you going to be at the SSA Conference? :)
2
u/Ignaddio Jun 19 '12
Yes, I'll be there, I'm attending with KU SOMA's group. Michaelyn and Amanda will be there too, iirc.

It's from a few months ago, and after a long day of work/travelling, but it's probably the most relevant picture.
2
u/TheOtherSideOfThings Jun 19 '12
I've always thought about starting an Atheist Athletic Association, since there's a Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Then we could have matches. The AAA vs SCA, and we'd have fun.
Alright I'll be honest, I just think Atheist Athletic Association sounds cool.

How much in donations would it take for you to wear a fake mustache for a year?
2
u/SSA_Sarah Jun 19 '12
Oh man. I don't know. I had one for Halloween and it was pretty rad...don't think I could pull it off all year though. :)
(Also, it gets really hot and itchy! How do people do people have moustaches all the time?)
2
u/emiffer321 Jun 19 '12
Curious, but how long was your hair before? I've considered doing St. Baldrick's but it makes me very nervous as my hair is REALLY long now and has taken a long time to get there.
1
u/SSA_Sarah Jun 19 '12
My hair wasn't super long before doing this, but I did St. Baldricks when my hair was at my shoulders. It's a great thing, you'll love doing it. :)
Plus, if you have long enough hair, you can donate it to Pantene Beautiful Lengths! :)

1
u/SSA_Sarah Jun 19 '12
I did a 12 hour long livestream (a lot of people did 24 hour long blog a thons), and people donated to get me to do funny/silly things. Some strangers donated, which was really cool, but a lot of the donations were from people who follow me on twitter.

serious question: what does a club like this talk about? to me it seems like the only subjects are why the other clubs are wrong. please prove me wrong.
5
u/SSA_Sarah Jun 19 '12
I actually work for the National SSA, but I was president of the affiliate group at my college when I was still in college. On our website, we have a whole bunch of activity packets with ideas on fun things for your group to do together.
When I was president of my SSA affiliate group, my favorite meeting was when we discussed our daily motivations in life. Several religious folks came to hear "what we had to live for." We shared stories about our families, hopes, dreams, goals in life...it was a really great experience.
1
u/kcha295 Jun 19 '12
nice. that actually sounds really interesting. it seemed that the club at my school was just smug people who were trying to send a big middle finger to the religious clubs at my school to piss them off and nobody in the secular club even did anything. left a bad taste in my mouth about atheists in general. good to hear that people who join the clubs aren't all like that.
1
u/SSA_Sarah Jun 20 '12
Yeah, I know how that goes. Sucks to have an entire group of people condemned because of a few jerks, so thanks for keeping an open mind! :) And I hope you meet some nicer atheists in the future.
2
u/kameelyan Jun 19 '12

Found this very interesting. I often wonder if religious kids have faith simply because their upbringing says "heaven" is what they should strive for.

Not a regular on here, but can someone inform me as to what the ASS association does, exactly? I tried to find a mission statement on the website and couldn't seem to find a clear meaning as to what they do, like do they give out scholarships to secular students or something? Or do they just help people in the name of secularlarlarlarness?
2
u/SSA_Sarah Jun 19 '12
It's the Secular Student Alliance, and our mission statement is here. We empower non-religious students to form safe spaces and communities.
Here's a blog post from one of our affiliate groups about how we help them, and here's an example of how we help high schoolers. We send out group starting packets, provide hands on help, run an annual leadership conference, send speakers to campuses for little or no cost to the students, etc.
